Legend of the River King (Im addicted right now)
For the Duo??? Is this the same "fishing-RPG" series that had a couple releases for the Gameboy?
SNES
Secret of Mana - made a small diversion into a hobby I could enjoy for years...
Super Metroid - just love all of the secret stuff and completely un-obvious "puzzles" that need to be solved to advance
Lufia 2 - simply the best "puzzle dungeons" out there.
How hard is it to nix instant classics like Zelda? How hard is it to leave off games that you felt the need to COMPLETELY finish like Chrono? How hard is it to leave off the first game you ever beat? Stiff competition...
PlayStation
Vagrant Story - rock-solid design, replayable, brilliant translation.
Castlevania: Symphony - can't say it was top 3 material 5 years ago, but the fact that I keep going back to it every year says something...
Final Fantasy Tactics - beats Vandal Hearts because of it's replayability. Tops even Suikoden's soundtrack. I want to choose something like FF8, MGS, or Alundra, but just can't...
It's official - the fact that I can keep going back to these games is their biggest upside. The other 150 PSX games I own wish they could say the same...
PlayStation 2
Final Fantasy X - never played a game that has so much MEANINGFUL stuff to do. And I wouldn't have even cared if the battle system wasn't so fluid... or the story wasn't so thoughtful... or the atmosphere wasn't so carefully constructed...
Suikoden 3 - It's the last game I really gave my all to finish. One game later and I may completely forget it... but the wonderful cast of characters and strange sense of immersion still stick with me...
ICO - not sure why a castle with no distinguishable features provides such a great atmosphere. Not sure why roughly 5 minutes of exposition provide such a memorable story. Not sure why such simplistic combat and predictable puzzle solving provide such interesting gameplay. It just does.
So the question remains, why the PS2 of all systems? You don't know how bad I wanted Shenmue 2, Legacy of the Wizard, or Panzer Saga on this list. You also don't know how close I was to putting the N64 (one of the most dissapointing systems in my book) in the 3rd spot. For all of those favorites I mentioned, it was just so hard to find a supporting cast that even came close without copping out and include remakes or ports.
As much as I hate "poll" posts for being thoughtless, this one required an awful lot of reflection...
