I found a very strange 1897 coin while I was running my change through the coinstar machine this weekend.

If anyone can help identify this, it would be greatly appreciated!

It looks like a VERY dark brown penny. The face has a two headed bird on it. The back has a large "2" on it just slightly above center. Under that is a cluster of leaves, that are not symmetrical. Under that the date 1897 is printed.

HELP!

Most likely an Indian Head penny.

First is this a US coin?

It's definately not an Indian head penny, nor the Flying eagle cent which predated that.

It sounds a bit like the 2 cent piece...although I don't think those were produced until 1897, nor do I remember an eagle..

Ok then two questions

Is the date clear? As in there is no way its something besides 1897?

Also does it say a value anywhere around the 2?

More stuff as I think of it.

What kind of size is the coin
and
I can host scans if I don't figure it out until then.

No value around the two.

Country of origin is difficult because the only two marks on the coin are "1897" and "2" nothing else on the coin is a number or language.

The date is pretty clear.
