Security Device Enclosed

Isn't it annoying when you buy a new DVD, and there are 3 stickers that you need to peel off on each side that say, "Security Device Enclosed?"

Yep this pisses me off too... whenever this happens I usually force the workers at the place I bought it from to take them off for me... and they have to because The customer is always right. Then use the Goo Gone if there's any residule sticky shit on the plastic sleeve.

I have 1039 DVDs; imagine how many of those things I'VE had to pull off... (not all DVDs have 3 of them, but enough to piss me off!)

All of Viz's releases, along with Media-Blasters have the 3 stickers. Pioneer, Bandai, Animeigo, ADV and tons of others only have the top label with the DVD title on it. Those are easy to pull off most times. Although THOSE labels piss me off when the insert is sticking out of the top of the case, you pull the sticker and... you tear the entire length of the insert off where it was stuck. I've done that a couple of times, but I finally learned my lesson and take the top one slow if the inserts popped up.

Those stickers are annoying, but once I opened a DVD (it was a flipper-style two-sided disc) and the black plastic thingy with the magnetic strip was stuck to the disc!

Also, several times I've received damaged discs through the mail beause they have come loose in the case and the underside gets scratched all to hell. :blow_top:

I feel your pain. I've had several discs scratched in mailing (I hate DVD cases with the "M" locking system. Bandai uses them at times, though they aren't used as often any more.) My brother opened a brand new DVD once and it had a FINGERPRINT on the disc. Talk about weird.

You lucky BASTARD! :D

I hate the fact that if you try and get your finger nail underneath the seal, sometimes it will leave a stretch in the clear cover!

OK, brain-teaser. Say you are a DVD collector... and you want to keep your DVDs "Minty." Wouldn't the removing of these stickers, something that should be on the DVD as it was shipped to the store, make it not complete? Just going by the collector mentality here... and anticipating a thread at a DVD board 5 years from now saying:

"Man, I can't believe I pulled those security sensors off my DVDs!"

Response: "Dude, I've got over 4,000 DVDs I pulled stickers off of, think how I feel!"

This is a fantastic point. The cases are too big. The DVD box will be redesigned in the future. Remember old CD boxes? Man... Same thing... what a waste. Does anyone even have any of that packaging? I had tons of CD paper boxes, tossed them as soon as I got home!

DVD's should be in jewel cases, this would mean that if the DVD ever came off the lock it would not be scratched by the case! Besides, whats the point, to make them look different? Display racks have long since moved from long display to the common jewel box display. Modular shelving is usually used in DVD sales areas instead of flipfile type CD areas... this makes it harder to browse DVDs (like at Circuit City) or means they are spine out displayed (which decreases sales). A flipfile would be better!

Oh well...

The problem with jewel cases is they BREAK like flourescent light bulbs. A little bump and you have to find yourself a new one.

Redsign the wheel maybe? I'm not saying they are perfect, but they are a better size. Perhaps making the jewel case out of strong opaque plastic would be a solution!

I have a better idea. How about we keep the current DVD cases, except make them clear and then have the inserts somehow inside the case, leaving no use for the plastic casing on the outside, solving the problem of ruining your cases.

And I like DVD cases anyway, except for the way stores like virgin have them, its hard to read things vertically. They just look cooler than jewel cases and are alot more durable.

Than the inside should be redesigned. They are not good for shipping discs ;) Too much slack space which "Scratches the discs"

I don't really care, I am FAR from a collector, I have like 10 DVDs...

I would say that I am a collector. I would like to keep my DVDs "minty." But the funny thing is, an open DVD, as long as it's not scratched, is still only a fraction of the original monetary value of the same disc NIB. That's why I don't care about pulling them off, and why you will never see me on a DVD baord lamenting the fact that I did so. I also, barring any unforseen circumstances, will not sell anything in my collection, making the value a moot point.

Granted, there are SOME DVDs (Criterion LEs and so forth) that are worth a shitload of money open or not. These obviously don't count in the open DVD "monetary value" mentatlity.

Is it safe to assume you were poking fun at home cart collector's who are anal about everything? :D

Yes, it was a bit tounge in cheek, but I could still see it happening ;) I've seen stranger stuff here, that's for sure!

The most annoying DVD cases are the ones that hold onto the disc so hard that you practically have to break it in order to remove it. RETARDED designs!

Why on earth they didn't stick with standard jewel cases I have no idea.

I used to cut up those CD boxes to put band logos in my locker in high school. :)
