Famicoms are nice indeed, but I'd have to tell you to go with a Super Fami (SNES) if you had to pick between the two. The 16-Bit era will always be the "Golden Age" of gaming, and while I'm a SEGA Mega Drive nut (as well as NEO)... you just can't go wrong with teh Super Fami. Lotta' good games on the system to be had and for dirt cheap at times.

Get the super NES. It withstands the test of time. I've had mine since I was a kid, and it still works to this day. You have a lot of great titles for it, including classic ones like super mario world and mario kart, in addition to super mario allstars. It's one of my favorite systems of all time, and I know you'll not be disapointed in it!

I just picked up a Super Famicom (Super Nintendo) myself the other day.

It's worth it, like everyone else said, there are lots of good games to be played.

The titles published by Nintendo are usually the best I found, Starfox, Donkey Kong Country, the Mario games etc.

Just avoid fighting games, they usually play really badly, and can't compare to their original arcade/Neo counterparts.

I'd go for the NES myself. Some of the best games around are NES titles, like Mega Man 2. You'll be happy either way you go, but I'd say NES if you have to choose...

Good choice.

Have fun with your new system, and remember...

must-own NES games:

Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 3
River City Ransom
Crash' n the Boys

there are tons (almost countless) of fun, fast and easy to get into, games for NES like "Fire' n Ice", Gradius and Othello. they can be found cheap (cart-only), but again, there are many games to buy. because of this, I think you should have started with SNES (one of my 2 best consoles for RPGs along with the PSOne).

make sure to get these games for SNES as well:

Zelda 3
Lufia 2
Yoshi's island
Earth Bound
Mario RPG
Mario Kart (much better than GBA game)
Prince of Persia (cool + very cheap)
Super Double Dragon (excellent beat em up)
Secret of Mana

there are other excellent games as well, but I recommend starting with these games.

just a note, if you can afford a Famicom Converter, then you MUST start looking for Kunio games. these are one of the best and most underrated games. I can help if you're interested in knowing more about them (or any of the games I mentioned). good luck with your purchases :)
