Recommendations for the current sale... coupon code/link is in my sig.

Evangelion - great series. You know you want it.

Rahxephon - Evangelion rip-off. Still not sure if I like it or not, but it's definately INTERESTING.

Noir - well directed, good mix of "independant" episodes and "story" episodes.

Full Metal Panic - some episodes are brilliant, some are terrible, but well worth it for the price.

Bubblegum Crisis 2040 - this is actually on sale in bundle form for 60 bucks. Well worth it for that price.

Nadesico - one of my favorite series, period. Very funny without resorting to "cheap" jokes.

Rurouni Kenshin OVA discs - AWESOME. Works perfectly as a movie without having to commit to the 90-something episode TV series... and obviously a must-have if you do have the TV series.

Steel Angel Kurumi - the 2nd series is terrible (IMO), but the first series is a lot of fun. Great change of pace from a more typical series...

Rune Soldier - Another series I'm not sure if I like yet, but if you're a Slayer's fan (which I also just started), I think you'll like this.

I'm sure there's more, but this is a pretty decent list already...

As always, coupon code and link are in my sig. Please use the link if you buy something!

You know, I think I've said this before in another topic but, RahXephon is really Evangelion done RIGHT. It tells it's story well, and is well animated (it's no 1st season InuYasha, but it's decent). The music is MUCH better than Eva's (did anybody actually like that music, except for the OP and ED?) Plus the characters are MUCH more likeable than Eva's IMO. And the show has Kuwashima Houko in it as the "Rei" character.

And a manga recommendation: Azumanga Daioh. Really, you're going to hell if you don't buy this.

I ordered:

Aura Battler Dunbine (supposedly a good series, we will see...)
Crying Freeman (yet another supposedly good series)
Gamera 2 and 3 (people in costumes? sign me up!)
Go Nagai collection
Saiyuki 6

Good ADV stuff to buy:

Bubblegum Crisis 2040
Full Metal Panic
Steel Angel Kurumi (I actually enjoyed both seasons, though the first is the best)
Neo Ranga
King of Bandit Jing (decent, not amazing, but good)
Saiyuki (good, but not great)

And one show I think a lot of people skipped out on:

Devil Lady (or Devilman Lady to anyone who follows the Japanese releases).

I bought Devil Lady on a whim (it was $70 for the entire series on DVD in the weekly specials a few weeks back). I watched it over the weekend and whereas I will admit it is kind of slow, it is fucking AWESOME. The main story takes a while to develop, but in the meantime there is enough suspense and action to keep you interested. I lost interest at one point only because I burnt myself out on it (watching 300 minutes of any show is bound to wear on anyone! :D ), but the next day I started it up again and it had me hooked all over again. This is one of the few shows where I actually woke up during the night and just would lay in bed thinking about. Truely an awesome show IMO.

Then there is the MUSIC to the series... tremendous. I have Dash no Chris ordering that OST for me, it was that good! The opening track fits to ominous mood of the series and the music during the series fits perfectly as well. The second ending theme wasn't as good as I had hoped, but they can't ALL be great.

Check out Devil Lady! Even if you only get disc one this time to check it out, ADV stuff is BOUND to go on sale again, and if you like it, pick the rest up then!

Too Much good stuff!!!

thanks again Nick. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to pick up everything I wanted, so I ended up getting:

Eden's Bowy #5
Full Metal Panic #3
Lost Universe #3
Nadesico #3
Orphen #4
Rune Soldier #3

all IMO very good series. I'd also recommend Excel Saga and Gasaraki as well as a lot of the stuff already mentioned.

Ah, Kuwashima Houko as a boy. And the main character at that! I liked it too, but I think Saber Marionette J is just slightly better. Still worth it though. I haven't seen the second season, I'll have to pick that up.

No love for RahXephon? ;_;

RahXephon was mentioned earlier, and I tried not to push things that were already mentioned. :D

And if I'm not mistaken, Kuwashima Houko plays the female lead role in Steel Angel Kurumi 2 (the new master of Kurumi)...

But my favorite voice in Kurumi would have to be Atsuko Enomoto. Kurumi wouldn't be Kurumi without her!

Your opinion on Saber MArionette J is noted, though I don't think I share it. Kurumi (first series) was one of my all time fav shows. SMJ was good, damn near great, but... well, it wasn't Kurumi! :) And SMJ and Kurumi both had Inoue Kikuko playing rolls, how could they NOT be great? Tiger (SMJ) and Nadeshico (Kurumi).

One title I forgot to mention was Ushio and Tora. It was a cool series, marred only by the fact that it was based off a manga we'll never see. So what ends up happening is that it ends, but doesn't REALLY end, since they expect you to buy the manga...

18 bucks a DVD (roughly) PLUS another 10% if you're a member of their frequent buyers club. SOMETIMES www.digitaleyes.net has the DVDs for as low as 19 (most stores are at least 21-22 per dvd), but if you can find these DVDs for a cheaper price, please do share.

And I'm not saying that to be an ass - if you can get a better deal, I want it too!

Thanks for the manga recommendations - I need 'em.

As for the "animation" comments, I'd almost disagree on Inu Yasha being well animated. The character designs are gorgeous, but it's generally very "still". I get the same feeling (not as much, maybe) from Rahxephon and a lot of newer, digital shows. I'm not against the CG trend, it just seems as the characters get more detailed they move a bit less...

Just an aside, anyways - don't take it as a knock against Ra in specific. I use the term rip-off jokingly too. I do like the music (Yoko Kanno is almost always right on), but I also liked the unique flavor that Eva had. The characters in Ra seem a little less "human" to me (but I'll reserve judgement till I see it all the way through), but...

Any negativity that you may sense (at the moment, anyways) is mainly because we had a good drinking game going for anytime someone said "dress me" or "comb my hair". Now we just have to settle on out-of-the-blue homosexual undertones since the show switched gears.

It's not super great, but it IS a good series IMO. It also has some of the best cover art available! :D

The show is in the 15 minute episode, 8 (or is it 6 a disc?) epsidodes a disc format, similar to Kurumi, but I remember it having more eps per disc than Kurumi.

Worth checking out.

MUC was a good series... not one of my all time favorites, but damn good none-the-less.

Just a question since I'm a pretty lazy anime watcher. As in I don't try stuff until someone shows it to me. Anyhow, I've downloaded a couple eps of Sentou Yusei Yukikaze and I liked it, so I've wondered if anyone knows if its been licensed to be released or where to find such info.

Also, any recommendations in the vein of these series that I really enjoy

Gunsmith Cats
Cowboy Bebop
Blue Submarine No. 6 (this is how I found Yukikaze)

It's a show I really recommend watching in english, even if you can understand Japanese. I hadn't stuck with any of Media Blaster's dubs for more than an episode. The english voices add a little something to each role that I didn't quite get from the Japanese actors.

Anyways, it just happened to strike me the same way Fruits Basket did. Not sure what the deal is with me and these "wussy" shows all of the sudden...

Anyways, I kind've like the short episode format, so I'll at least give NR a shot...

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Yukikaze hasn't been licensed yet.

Gunsmith Cats is by ADV, but I can't think of any "really similar" shows that I've seen from ADV that I've liked. If you're simply looking for good action, the Samurai X OVAs (Rurouni Kenshin, but not the TV series or movie) and Evangelion both have plenty.

Come to think of it, Noir is kinda similar to Gunsmith Cats. 2 female assassins, a decent amount of action, but a lot more "serious" and slower moving at times. Good, but not exactly the same.

Yeah I did pick up Noir, because I watched the first ep, came on a disc from New Type...unfortunately that was the only ep I enjoyed...too slow or something...

So I stopped buying after disc 3, and sold my box set to KOF Fanatic

Since you granted permission, I will be the one to correct you then :D. Yukikaze HAS been licensed. I saw a trailer for it at Otakon. I believe it was in the Bandai booth where you had to wait in line, watch their previews and then get a free WHR t-shirt. If it's not Bandai, then it was shown at the Pioneer panel, but I'm almost positive it was Bandai's.

And where to find it? It's not been released yet,. I believe they were shooting for the first disc to release "early next year."

In case no one believe's that Yukikaze has been licensed, check out the grand high licensing list on Anime On DVD. It's number 22 on the list, though it doesn't list WHO licensed the damn thing.

edit
And to lithy, that list is about as complete a list as I'VE been able to locate for Anime that has been licensed.

edit2
I found a listing of the show and who licensed it here. I was almost positive it was Bandai, and what do you know, it was!?

I think I tried to use your link recently Nick. I was about to order and remembered you.

I read a little of Azumanga back at Barnes and Nobles recently and it was a great little book. So funny. I had to read into it because I heard about the 4-panel format and I wanted to see what it was like. The first is on the way to me from Amazon (I ordered it the DAY before this sale! Argh! Couldn't cancel) and I plan on pre-ordering the other 2 already up when I come around.

I've been waiting for an ADV sale JUST to pick up Summer's Beginning. Kimagure Orange Road is one of my favorite series and with the OVA/Movie Box Set from AE in November (11th to be exact) I want Summer's Beginning right after I finish.

801 TTS Airbats is a relatively unknown title but bokmeow loved it and we have very similar tastes so I promised myself next ADV sale I'd pick it up.

I'm wanting Pretear and Super GALs, but I'm going overboard. 52 episodes for something I'm 90% sure I'll be addicted to is too much. Maybe I'd check Pretear but if ADV could just do a 3-disc set it'd be a shove in the right direction. That'd be an impulse buy.

Aside from these, I think that's it. I'm waiting for another nice daily deal to pick all these up with. I've been buying so many things from Daily Deals recently its scary. Sugar Vol. 1 w/box, Dangaizer 3, KO Beast...the list doesn't go much further but I'm sure it will. If they could just daily deal the Kare Kano box set...

EDIT: Forgot to add that I'll be looking into the RK OVAs (Tsukiohen [sp?])

Just picked up the LD box set of Kimagure Orange Road TV myself - the old school feel is kind of... refreshing. I assume the OVAs/Movie take place AFTER the TV series, right?

Now, what is Super Gals about? I've seen it in stores everywhere and completely ignored it, but it seems whenever someone mentions something *might* be good on this board, I have to go out of my way to pick it up. It's like if someone told me to buy it, God will forgive me for spending absurd amounts of money. ;)

Heh... anyways, I still haven't watched #5, so I certainly can't say it keeps that momentum, but it did kinda renew my interest.

Yes they do, with Summer's Beginning taking place... 5-10 years after the last of the "original" series, OVA and movie.

There isn't really much to be said about Azumanga, except read it. And then melt with anticipation for the animated series to be released. I saw it when it was fansubbed, before being licensed, and it's one of my favorite series ever. Excellent voice acting, animation, music, it nails it all. And each episode has four "parts" just like the manga has four panel strips. Brilliant.

I think the CG look is somewhat "cleaner" looking. It looks nice if used properly (Cowboy Bebop, InuYasha). But it can be overdone (um, Candidate for Goddess?).

Just an aside, anyways - don't take it as a knock against Ra in specific. I use the term rip-off jokingly too. Yeah, you need to see it all the way through. It has one of the most satisfying endings ever. Quite the opposite of Eva. Personally, the characters feel more human to me than Eva's characters, so I guess it's just a matter of taste.

Any negativity that you may sense (at the moment, anyways) is mainly because we had a good drinking game going for anytime someone said "dress me" or "comb my hair". Now we just have to settle on out-of-the-blue homosexual undertones since the show switched gears.

You should have started one for the Eva, uh, refrences. Honestly when Ayato first started staying at Haruka's house at the end of the 2nd (3rd?) episode and he said "I'm home." And she said "Welcome home" I laughed out loud. (OK, snickered) Anybody who's seen Eva can tell that that must have been done on purpose.

All in all, I think it's a series that doesn't get the credit it deserves, and I'm interested in picking up the RahXephon Bible that was just released.

I like MUC, but the problem with the Anime Works release is that there are only 2 episodes per DVD, and very little in the way of extras. I got them real cheap, so I'm pleased with them, but I can't see paying full price for them;)

I also saw 1 episode of Super Gals last weekend in a local anime store, but I couldn't glean much from my limited viewing, other than the fact that I really like the character design. The art is also extremely colorful and bright:cool:

Kimagure was such an excellent series. I have never seen the OAV's though, should I be making them a priority?

The OVAs kind of mess up the issue about powers etc. continuity (don't want to spoil) but basically, after you get the gist of the show you're safe to watch them. 2 OVAs are 'postcard' OVAs such that they're meant to put the cast into different and exotic places. The other 6 are just like more episodes. The first movie is A COMPLETE SPOILER OF THE ENTIRE SERIES, so basically, don't watch this until you've seen all 8 OVAs with the 48 TV Episodes. IIRC, KOR: SB takes place 2-3 years after the first movie. The first movie is supposed to be one damn good finale so I've been antsy waiting. And from what I've spoiled to myself from reading...

*SUPER SOILERS*Yuusaku is left out of the conclusion *END SUPER SPOILERS*

tee hee, super spoilers...

Anyway, everyone that's seen Super GALs says they're dying to wait for any more of it and love the show to death. Nice that the first two disks are both 5 eps instead of 5/4/4/4/4/5 so we'll get maximum first exposure.

A show like Rah just "moves" different to me. Many shows with extremely stylized designs do. You're right, though, it's much cleaner, and it's especially gorgeous on a nice entertainment setup. It's not a bad tradeoff, just a tradeoff...

It might be crazy-talk, too. I swear I see a difference, but...

But yeah, I'll see it through. I'm also really interested in the art-book - with all the manga being published lately, hopefully they start publishing art books regularily too.
