N-Gage sells under 5,000 units at US launch

Rob Fahey 11:56 21/10/2003
Weak start for Nokia's ambitious game deck
An independent market research firm has released sales figures for Nokia's N-Gage in the USA, revealing that the game deck has sold under 5,000 units across both videogame and mobile phone retailers.

No official figures for shipments, sales or pre-orders of the N-Gage have been forthcoming from Nokia, although last week the company's CEO, Jorma Ollila, said that "many outlets sold out of the device during the first day of release" and claimed that the company was seeing "strong order intake from distributors and retailers."

Ollila's comments now look a little odd in the cold light of sales figure reality. The US figures, which were collected by independent firm Arcadia Research and claim to cover every outlet that stocked the N-Gage in the USA, make this out to be one of the weakest console releases ever - not to mention a very poor performance for a new high-end mobile phone.

Although no figures covering mobile phone outlets in the UK are available as yet, this week's Chart-Track figures reveal that the N-Gage continues to sell poorly at videogame retailers, with slightly fewer units sold this week than in the device's first week on sale - leaving the overall number sold in the first fortnight at under a thousand units.

This figure is probably misleading because game retailers are selling the device at full price while it is available with subsidies and mobile network contracts at dedicated phone retailers; however, there's simply no way of telling at the moment whether consumers are buying into the device with contracts. Nokia itself certainly isn't saying, and the mobile phone stores we spoke to were reluctant to comment on the sales of the device.

Pitiful isn't it

My brother works at the "local" EB. They pulled off preselling ONE unit. 2 days later the guy returned it.

I am amazed at the stupidity of some of these companies. I honestly think they get to a point where they have so much money they dont know what to do and a SHITTY handheld is the result. Pathetic, anyone could have told Nokias marketing geniuses that this was a shitty idea.

yep, but that's the unfortunate reality in a time where sony has successfully pryed open the industry to non-videogame companies. hopefully this miserable failure will make any other companies just looking for a piece of the pie remember things like the 3DO and once again think twice before even considering jumping in.

One minor difference, however, is that at least 3DO was a video game company only. What we have now is every company and my nuts making video game hardware.

yea I always see that shit then a day or so later "oh that was a miscalculation one or two too many zeros. This happened with Gamecube and I WOULD NOT DOUBT MS HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT as this was in relation to xbox outselling gamecube when in fact it was COMPLETELY the other way around, I will try to find that one.

Yeah, 3DO may have been developed by a videogame company, but if you recall, back when The 3DO console was out, it was being manufactured by three different companies who had only been known for general electronics, including panasonic, sanyo, and goldstar. that's the aspect I was getting at.

Thats a little better than what the Game Stop did where I work. The only one that was sold was the free unit our store Manager got. It was sold to an employee for $100. Then resold on ebay for $350. I laugh at Nokia

I bought one on the launch day. It's a really good cell phone with a minor add-on.
Putting the O.S. Fexplorer, you send everything by bluetooth, and you have access to every single file located at Ram,Rom or MMC Card.

It's far from being a killer console, and it's no match for GB SP, but
N-Gage it's technology is far superior.
Tomb Raider it's quite good for an hand held. But the vertical screen doesn't appeal to the gamers.

One big..big fault is the battery Life...:mad_2:

Music: Up to 8 hours
Radio: Up to 20 hours
Games: 3-6 hours
Stand by: 150H-200H

This are the official times by nokia...But I do not obtain more than 4 hours of continuous gameplay!!!

:shame:

Its a gaming mobile phone, so

failure

Who'd buy it just to use as a phone? no-one,

hell no-ones buying it now for games, its true purpose.

If someone wants a 'cellular phone' they'll buy one, but it won't be the N-GAYGE

Nokia has sold 400,000 to RETAILERS, retailers have only been able to MOVE 5,000 of them.

What in the blue hell are they doing to cellphones nowadays?! Aren't cellphones supposed to be used for phoning, not for gaming or filming or whatever??

Dammit, these "extra" features are getting out of hand now.....

Simple: that article is talking WORLDWIDE.

The first article was about just the US.

It probably is selling better in parts of Europe where Nokia is stronger.

Heh, in the US, however, its burn, baby, burn! :buttrock: :very_ang: :buttrock:

This thing is shaping up to be like the Xbox spindoctoring.

I know what you mean. My friends phone can also surf the net in color and all this crazy stuff. All I need is to call a bud not use AOL IM and store a whole bunch of crazy crap.

i played a demo unit at the local EBs
the second unit was not working so i played the first.
they had pandemonium on it.
and honestly i thought it was alright.
i mean the engine is apparently almost as good as a ps1
even though all the games so far seem to be 2d side scrolling games.
but everything else about it was totally wrong. from navigating
to the actual game to apparently the durability especially if
they cant get the demo units to work right.
the screen is a dumb idea and whoevers idea it was to switch games
by taking out the battery is a genuine moron.
if they fixed those things and the other things like the battery life as
mentioned, then who knows.
nokia would be smart not to keep this as the failed n-gage
but instead incorporate their technology into all their standard phones
and market them that way.
as just a stand alone system its not viable.
as an add on to promote cell phone sales.
that might be an idea.
