Im baffled please tell me
what do the symbols above the ranks mean

Ranks are just for fun and mean nothing.
The symbols change as you up your posts.
First you have X, then XX, then XXX (I think it goes to 3 or 5 or so) then it might change color or after you get enough, then you go to Y.
Just think of clearing the 10th wave of Galaxian and you are on the right path.

Oh, and mods have stars to signify their omnipotent power and ability to squash your nutz.
