personally, i hate carts only. i want games to be in their complete original form.. not necessarily saying that they have to be super mint and never touched without gloves or anything.. just that i really do feel a game should be complete.

i know some of the more 'hardcore' collectors though will buy a complete version of a game that they keep on a shelf or whatnot, then buy a loose version of it also that they'll play. if i was filthy rich i'd probably do the same, but since i'm not.. i'll be damned if i take it that far.

I feel terrible participating in a conversation like this, but against my better judgement...

I think a *large* quantity of cart only games (SNES or NES), lined up with the top label out actually looks pretty decent. MVS games are ugly as sin, though, so Shock Boxes are almost a necessity...

As someone with limited display space, though, my cart-only games are stacked out of the way and even behind boxed games. And rather than worrying about getting at them to play, I've justed backed them up on my X-Box for ease of use.

I have a nes cart only collection and I´m very proud of it

it´s cool to have all those nes carts lined up.

Nintendo boxes are very fragile, that´s why i don´t care about them. Especially nes boxes.

depending on few things:

-how much do I love this game
-are there important things apart from the cart/cd (maps, the rankings in dragon force manual ...... etc.)
-how expensive the complete copy goes compared to the cart-only one (phantasy star 4)
-how difficult it is to find complete games for that system (NES, SNES, some Genisis, .... etc.)

there are other things too. the idea isn't showing off the collection, but to play them first (which in this case a cart/cd-only would be enough)

if you're just after them because you want to play them, then it doesn't matter if they're loose or not.. but if you're collecting them, then it does.

i try to find things with boxes and instructions.
carts without are usually a 'turn off' for me.
i dont pick up bare carts unless its super cheap or
i dont feel i can find it otherwise without expending alot of effort.
not that it matters anyways.
i put all my cart games in a box to keep out the dust and put all the
manuals and boxes broken down all stuffed in a big box and throw it in
my closet. genny games are the worst for taking up space since they
cant be folded down or anything. so i just leave them.
but n64 and snes games are all put away in the aforementioned way.
theres no reason to put it up on the shelf, it takes up way too much space.
i barely have enough room for the cd dvd games.

If I can get the box and manual or whatever went with a game to make it complete then yes I want it, but personally I proudly display just the carts :), as for disk games, it is almost necessary to have the case and manual. But im not going to pass anything up if it is cheap enough :) Im not rich..:glee:

I guess I dont get the thrill of collecting. Most people would probably consider me a collector. Ive got well over 300 games, and 30 or so systems (counting duplicates). But I dont display any of it. I have the systems that im currently interested in playing hooked up, and I keep my games packed away on shelves in my closet, dresser drawers, etc. I only buy games that im interested in playing.

I never trade in my old games. Even if I feel like a chump for buying it to begin with. Tekken 4 for example :annoyed: One time 7 years ago I traded in around 30 or so 16 bit era games. I wound up re-buying almost all of them. So I learned my lesson.

Anyway im rambling on here. When I buy games I do have some standards that I follow. I wont buy carts with damaged labels (unless its uber cheap and I cant get it anywhere else). I only buy NEW disc based games, (except for Saturn where I have to make an exception). I have yet to scratch any of my disc based games. Im very carefull with them. :)

Well there you go. Im not sure what the point of this post is though. :spock:

Most loose carts look nice when on display. Especially Atari 2600 and NES. There are a few that I don't really care for loose, such as Genesis, because although they stack well, the label position requires that you stack them upside down if you want to be able to read the end label. I don't know, they just look stupid. N64 absolutely suck to display loose because there is no end label on a N64 cart, so you can't tell what your games are without pulling each one out of its spot. Thats why I don't have any loose N64 games, I only go for the complete ones.

If a cart came in a hard box such as Neo Geo and Genesis games it needs its box and manual. If it came in cardboard box such as NES and SNES games forget about the boxes and look for the best possible cart.

I'm lucky enough to run a store where people trade in their old games constantly without having any idea how much they are worth. (Case in point, some kid took 50 cents for his copy of Earthbound) So even if a game comes in cart only, there's a good chance someone else a month or two later will trade in a complete version. Then, I go into uber-anal-retentive mode and examine the carts to determine which one is worth keeping. I take baggies from boxed crappy games that come in to put on my nice ones as well.

In this way I got Dragon Warrior I-IV complete in box and didn't pay a dime for them. ^_^

Check eBay too, boxes or instruction manuals pop up there for pretty cheap sometimes.

My cart only games are kept on display in my coffee table with a clear glass top -- I was thinking of making a shadow-box table for display purposes, and also another table made out of 2600 carts. Cart only games are still worth displaying, but my boxed items do take center stage.
