Ok. 1 and 3 are actually connected by plot, 2 is sort of a side story. Silent Hill is a supernaturally messed up town that has problems due to an ancient god, and.. For some reason (in 2) seems a place to resolve your karma. I don't know. My gf is the survival horror player. But watching her, Silent Hill is the scariest survivial horror series. It scares me watching it.

In the 17th Century, Silent Hill was a scared place, a strange and bizarre cult worshipped this being by the name of "Samael" in this town. The black magic and dark arts they praticed during this time. Were put to an end, the towns people nearly killed, burned, hanged, and impaled over hundreds of followers of this cult. The witches who were the missonaries cast a curse upon the town itself.

Opening a giant gateway into hell itself for what the people have done to them.

So the entire series is trying to resurrect Samael or "GOD" to wash away the earth from all it's sins. Yet putting the entire world engulfed in Darkness.

Whomever comes near the town of Silent Hill has a purpose, because the town will call to that person (this case being Harry, James, or Heather) for a reason you will have to find out on your own.

Each character plays a major role on why they ended up in this town of Silent Hill

I hope this helps

The first two involve a lot of you asking people "Have you seen this person?" And thinking to yourself "wheretf is ____?" The third involves your character asking herself "WTF!? WTF IS GOING ON!?! OW MY STOMACH FORESHADOWING."

You usually begin in the normal world, your surroundings will be as they would be, houses are houses and so on. Later in the game your character will become dizzy, sirens will go off and you will enter the otherworld. It's like a warped reality of the normal world, walls will bleed and mutilated corpses will be hanging all over the place, the floor will become semi-transparent and so on. You have no friends in this world, the feeling that you are alone really makes an impact and adds to the scare factor.

As for gameplay, the Silent Hill games are surrounded by fog or darkness. You can only see a few metres in front of you. You have a radio which will emit sound whenever there are enemies close by. Other than that it's a survival horror game. You find weapons and fight your way through the nightmare to reveal the truth.

Silent Hill is simply one of the finest series to ever grace a television screen. Emotionally taxing, each Silent Hill is an experience in which every sense and feeling will be touched and effected. SH1 will tap into the metaphysical, occult, and those things which are true yet can't be explained. SH2 will jab at death, sex, and love, while SH3 will answer that which was un-answerd in 1.

I have mastered every SH, including the play novel which never made it here to the states. I have unlocked every secret of every version, and can say that this is a series that you must not miss. Buy them, play them, experience them.

i'd go more into detail, but you've got a good idea now from the other responses here.. but yeah i'd defenitely say this is a series you do not want to pass up.

Hee hee, but do you have the Famistu Wave demo version of SH1, with the re-arranged school level?

forget this and buy Eternal Darkness.

It may not have the scare part, but the sounds, story, voice acting, will keep you coming back for more.

just my $0.02

everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I love the silent hill series, especially silent hill 2. The emotion and atmosphere of the game is incredible, and pulls a few strings at my heart. In addition to being able to find the five different endings. But Silent hill 3 is awesome because of the smallest things like feeling the heart beat in your hands on your controller, and not knowing what's going to happen next...
Give it a shot in trying them out. even if you don't like one of the games in the series (which i doubt), you may like another one.

I agree absolutely. This series still amazes me, and SH 1 is easily one of my 10 favorite games ever. There's really nothing like this series.

The big thing when playing it to stress is patience. A lot of people give up playing after an hour or two, but you really won't know how good this game is unless you spend more time with it.

SH1 was for Playstation 1

Silent Hill 2 was originally for Playstation 2 but an improved version was later made for both PS2 and Xbox (Restless Dreams)

Silent Hill 3 is currently Playstation 2 only but supposedly there is a PC version soon.

You could sell your ps1 and get a relatively good price on a ps2, then you could play games for both systems on it. problem solved. ;)

Yep, but make sure you finish Silent Hill 1 with the best ending before playing SH 3!
