Im a college student working my way through school at Wal-Mart. Oh the joy of it. :annoyed: But at least I get a 10% disscount on all games etc, and decent pay for this type of job. So ive been their a year and a half. Not crazy about it, but it fits my scheduel and money needs pretty well right now.

I noticed an add for help at the local Family Video rental store. So on a whim I decide to apply. I fill out the application, and they ask me to come back today for a test. So after work I get cleaned up and head in for THE TEST...

Maybe its just me but I think their applicant screening is a bit extreem considering its just a crappy video store that probably pays minimum wage... I was subjected to 1 hour of timed tests ranging from vocabulary to algebra. I was then told that if I make the cut, they'll call me back for another round of tests. :envy: (im not envious, but that face sums up my feeling)

Ive quit more promising jobs than this one for less reason than this. Really do you have to have a masters degree in business to be able to say "Do you want that for 1 night or 2?"

I dont really want this job, just applied out of curiosity more than anything. I wouldn't take a 2 or 3 dollar an hour pay cut, and give up my Wallyworld disscount for this. But I think their employee screening process is a bit extreme for this type of job. :loco: I can only imagine what they must do at McDonalds. Blood tests? DNA samples?

I've never heard of a retail store making applicants take algebra and vocab tests. :spock: I've taken a morals test before for a retail job, but those questions revolve around honesty. Questions like: "If you found 100 bux on the road, would you try and return it to the bank" "If a family member was stealing from their place of employment, would you tell their boss"

But not an algebra test. For video rentals?! :loco:

Are you dense?

What if there are 6 movies in stock. There's 3 people. They live 20 miles, 30 miles, and 50 miles from the store and drive 35, 12 and 98 mph. They each want 2 videos. Who owns a hampster?

LOL I am way too bored.

That is a bit extreme for a video store. :spock:

I don't recall any algebra tests, though I do remember the whole ethics test when I applied at Borders a few years back.

But that's usually saved for the actual interview. If they do call you back for one, take notes or record the interview to see what kinds of questions they ask you.

That's a pretty unique thing to do there..
It's very important to find out if people know the three R's
BUT it should be limited to Businesss Math and Reading Level of 11th grade.
The test is working in more ways than one for that place because they're also finding out who really has the desire to work there. It's like..If you are willing to put up with this sh8t,you'll stick around for a lil' while and we know that you can read, write and count so we don't have to worry about the applicant putting us out of business if he or she should get the job.
This Employer is similar to being a potential customer for you as a contractor. They want the best person for the job and as a contractor, to eliminate all this prelim BS you need to be upfront with them and ask HOW MUCH DOES THE JOB PAY?..If they don't meet your price, just move on.

I see absolutely NO reason to leave Walmart, and every reason to stay.

I mean really what's so special about taking a paycut, losing 10% discount on videogames, working for a stable corporation that makes shitloads of money, working in good, professional conditions, and has chicks walking throughout the store all day?

Why would you want to work at Wallyworld over a video store?

Keep your job man. Its :spock: to do so.
