The best of their series?

Out of the many series out there, what game do you feel is the best out of them? When I say 'series', I mean there are at least 3 games, not something like Last Blade where there's just 1 and 2. I'll kick off a few, with a few comments for each:

Final Fantasy - Final Fantasy VI:

This was the pinnacle of the series. Just a straightforward solid story with great characters, nice art, and cool extras. Some people may say FF7, but I will always stand firmly beside this RPG as the best out of the Final Fantasy series, and perhaps of all time.

Fatal Fury - Real Bout Fatal Fury 2:

Regardless of what others say, RB2 doesn't miss a beat. It has a true arcade feel of "get in there, kick ass, and move onto the next guy". Great combos, it has Rick and Xiangfei, and I love the line system tons more in this game. Eat your heart out, RBS.

Samurai Shodown - Samurai Shodown 2:

What a classic. The gameplay is just perfect oldschool without it being too old to be able to enjoy thoroughly and repeatedly. This is hard for many games to do, but SS2 does it with ease and style. SNK knew what the fuck they were doing when they programmed this gem.

Street Fighter - Super Street Fighter 2 X:

Probably the best fighter of all time. It's balanced, has the characters you've grown to love, a badass engine, supers, and the introduction of Gouki. There's a reason this is still played in tournaments today, and it sure isn't the nostalgia factor that many people have for the older games they play.

Mario Bros. - Super Mario World:

This is like SMB3, but on crack. Really, it just doesn't get much better than this in terms of platformers. It has the sexy 16bit graphics that's easy on the eyes and the sweet gameplay that's found in few games. Plus it has Yoshi. Let's not talk about SMW2 though.. I still have nightmares about that game.

King of Fighters - King of Fighters '98:

The grandaddy of all KOFs. It has the gameplay of 3-on-3 without the strikers to get it too goofy. I'd lean much towards 2K2 if it wasn't for the fact that a lot of the f+attack moves were taken out, which were just nice and fun to use in combos. '98 also has crazy damage ratio, with many easy 75%-100% combos, granted you're stocked up. It has everything the other KOFs have plus the stuff they need to really make them shine.

Metroid - Super Metroid:

Throughout the Metroid saga, no game has stood taller than Super Metroid. It has the graphics that the NES versions were lacking and the gameplay that strayed away from the Gamecube version. Some may say Prime is more deserving, but it doesn't feel like a Metroid game. Super Metroid is probably in my top 5 games of all time. The music, weapons, graphics, everything.. it's just so perfect.

Virtua Fighter - Virtua Fighter Evolution:

I'm slowly beginning to see why this game is being loved by everybody. Honestly, none of the VF games were able to grab my attention. They just weren't fun. Some people said the series has a tough learning curve and it's not easy to just jump into it and start whooping ass, but I was able to do that in VF:EO, somewhat. I picked this up the other day at Spinmaster's recommendation and been having fun with the little features such as quest mode and such. Hopefully I'll have better insight to this incredible game once he shows me more, but right now I really do have to say this game appeals more to me than the others ever could, combined.

Mortal Kombat - Mortal Kombat 2:

The Mortal Kombat series has become a bit of a joke over the years. Gone are the days when you'd tell your friends to meet you at the arcade to play some MK without any of you laughing. MK2 is the best, easily. MK1 didn't have the gameplay. Nobody played it because it was fun to play, it was all just for the fatalities. MK3 tried to make the gameplay too happening with the dial-a-combos that just weren't fun, and the run button just seems weird, along with the block button. MK2 has the old style gameplay that actually made you think of combos and other little stuff, instead of memorizing button movements to mash in order to make your 9 hit combo come about. MK2 is the only MK where I don't think about stupid fatalities or dial-a-combos, and just straight gameplay.

Tekken - Tekken Tag:

Tag is the best, easily. Too many glitches in 4 to be considered, but 4 is still a sweet game in it's own right. There's no need for 3 since Tag is much more improved over it. The stuff you can do in this game is crazy and fun, and with another skilled player going against you the hours just whizz by. This is probably my favorite fighter at the moment.

So yeah, you can tell I'm bored. It beats trolling the War Room though. Anybody else got anything they wanna add? Series I didn't hit? Disagree? Think O.J. was really innocent? Post your shit.

I wish SSF2X had the original colors for all characters as well as bonus stages... But it's still the best in the series.

Mario 3
TMNT 2 for the NES
Ocarina of Time (many may disagree)
KoF 2000
Garou Mark of the wolves (if you consider it a Fatal Fury)
Mortal Kombat 3 (in 2 basically there was only one character, shang Tsung)
International Super Star Soccer 64

I would put FF IV over VI

SMB3 over SMW

and Tekken 3 over TTT.

Other than that I agree.

Ooh, good question! Let's see:

1) FF- Betwen FFV and FFVI (haven't played anything later than those):

While FFVI had the better graphics and the variety of well-thought-out characters, FFV had the cataclysmal storyline and the better, more interesting difficulty. Kefka was a pushover, X-Death was a fucking demon! However, FFV did have the usual crystal-based storyline, while FFVI used a more innovative storyline, and the gameplay system required learning magic from Espers, as opposed to buying them, as in FFV. On the other hand, the Job System of FFV was rockin (Though I hear it was actually re-used...). Tough choice.

2) Street Fighter - Alpha 3 (on DC, I say)

Back when I was a die-hard fan of SF...I guess I still am actually...I dreamed of seeing all the characters in one game. Then it happened, and I was happier than a kid lokced in a candy shop. Imagine my excitement: Vega vs. Rose! Blanka vs. Sakura! Adon vs. E. Honda! Gen vs. Fei-Long! Man, I spent whole days playing that game. Best days of my life...save for my trip to Hawaii...ahh...but unfortunately, some prick I lent it to never gave it back to me, so I'm suffering from nostalgic withdrawal at the moment. But shit, I loved that game more than my oen life...for a short time, of course.

3) King of Fighters - '97

I've said this many times before. I think '97 had the better storyline, decent gameplay, and evn though the music was limited, I still think that the ambience was better that way. Slightly more natural, I think. No one fights with blaring music in the background, unless the sponsors play it, or something.

4) Samurai Shodown - IV

I don't want to discuss this, I don't want EW and Deuce on my ass again (though Deuce hasn't been around in a while...)

5) Fatal Fury - Real Bout 2

This one had EVERY character from the RB world! I also thought this one was less banal than RBS, though not as fun gameplay-wise as RB. But I still think this one was more aesthetically pleasing.

Metal Slug -3

Just epic, man. Long as hell, and took me forever, but shit...it was just epic...

6)Mortal Kombat - Trilogy

This one shares the same sentiment as SFA3, although I don't like it anymore. But I remember how excited I was to see JC, Rayden and Baraka again, and with virtually every stage from every MK. It was awesome. Runner up is definitely MK2, because of it's nostalgic rating and it was slightly more interesting; better atmosphere.

7) SMB - hmmmm, that would be between SMW1 and SMW2

Wow, Super Mario World...those memories...going around that world of sugary food names, jumping on turtles, throwing fire balls...brings a tear to my eye...I still have it, so I should fire it up soon...yeah, definitely a beautiful game, the Zenith of SMB. SMW2, however, I say gets a close 2nd...it was even more beautiful, with interesting worlds, some tight music, and...damn, such an impressive update to the world of SMB...but it couldn't beat SMW with all those fond memories I have of it...

8) DKC - 2

I hated the beginning, but it got really awesome as it went on. This was just such an excellent series...I have all three on my SNES, and I haven't played them in ages...I should fire that up again...such fond memories...

Well, that's all I can think of.

Super Mario World is the best Mario platformer, but as far as Mario games go i am really fond of Super Mario RPG. Great title, simply one of the funnest rpgs i've ever played.

Fatal Fury - RB2
Samurai Shodown - SS2
Street Fighter - SSF2x / SF3 TS / SF2T, I can't choose just one. :D
Mario Bros - SMB3, it's all about the airships.
KoF - KoF 98
Metroid - Super Metroid / Metroid Fusion
MK - MK2, one of my favorite games ever

Another series, Twisted Metal - TM2 is the easy choice, great atmosphere, music, speed, destruction, and of course floaty napalm. One of my top 5 games of all time.

I agree on all points except Final Fantasy. FFIV just completely owns my soul because of the story and the music, even though FFVI offers a lot more in terms of gameplay. FFIV-VI are just utterly amazing though...the last gasp of a great company before they became Sony's bitch.

I think SMB3 is the best... More intuitive stages and more kinds of power-up....

Final Fantasy - Final Fantasy X:

Simply offers the most hours of gameplay and most customizeability of any FF. Out of 4, 6, 7, 8, and 10, I can't pick a favorite story or soundtrack, so neither factors in to the decision. Gotta pick X strictly from a *players* point of view.

Fatal Fury - Real Bout Fatal Fury 2:

I'll stick with you on this one...

Samurai Shodown - Samurai Shodown 3:

I like the "guessing game" aspect of it. Something different as far as fighters are concerned...

Street Fighter - Street Fighter 2 Turbo:

Simply because I never got into any of the characters in Super, 3, or Alpha. Tell me why the others play better - I don't care. I simply prefer the "core" characters.

Mario Bros. - Super Mario World:

Tempted to say 64 or SMW2, but this one lasted me the longest...

King of Fighters - King of Fighters '96:

Same arguement as SS2T above, only I feel this game has the best backgrounds and soundtrack (by far) of the series in addition to the "core" characters I like.

Metroid - Super Metroid:

I didn't really like 1, 2, or Fusion (so shoot me), so that leaves 2 games... Super wins just because it has more "secret" stuff.

Virtua Fighter - Virtua Fighter Evolution:

Yep...

Mortal Kombat - Mortal Kombat 2:

Yep again...

Tekken - Tekken 3:

Why? Because I never played anything past it. Makes the decision easy.

Additional series...

Sonic - Sonic 1

CD is probably better... along with 1, 2, 3, and Knuckles, but there's just this strange sense of nostalgia that surrounds this game. Can't really explain it.

Donkey Kong Country - DKC2

Best soundtrack, best gameplay.

Ok here we go-

Final Fantasy- 3/6

Mario- Mario 64 (I am a sucker bitch for this game)

Mortal Kombat- I gotta go with II as well

Medal of Honor- Allied Assault!

Samurai Showdown- I gotta go with II or III. I really like the gameplay in II, but III just looks amazing. AMAZING.

Zelda- The first one set the fucking standard, and I love it- but compared to Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time... its got nothing but its classic stature. So my vote goes to those two. For the Wind Waker... its cool... but its just not serious.

Resident Evil- I really love Resident Evil 2. Now that I think of it, I should probably get that for Gamecube. And Metroid Prime. Yeah.

Those are all the series' that I can think of for right now.

OH!

Best Expansion Awards:

Everquest: Shadows of Luclin. I mean seriously, this added about 50% more actual game space to the game. There were about 1000 new items and enemies. And even though the Luclin bodies totally make your computer cry, its all good. Next in line is Planes of Power cause it put druids out of business! HUZZAH!

Samurai Shodown -- SS2

Final Fantasy -- 4, with 6 pulling up a tad short. BY FAR the best cast of characters in an RPG, ever. Kain, Rydia, Tellah, Cecil, Karate Man Yang (you have to say his name that way), CID...! I'd put any combination of the final five members of your party against any other. I agree with what Loopz said to a point, but CT, IMO, was Square's last top-tier game (even though FF6 was better).

Fatal Fury -- FFS. A revised version of this game with MOTW-style animation and revamped art would be incredible (I know; a revision of a revision. So what.). The backgrounds were outstanding (Tung's in particular has jaw-dropping art) and the gameplay was quite balanced. Geese's theme never sounded cooler.

Soul Edge/Blade/Calibur -- Soul Calibur. I know it's considered the "in" thing to knock this game because of the hype, but this gem is SO polished...I have more fun just tinkering around with the opening movie than I have in some games. Great character depth, storylines, art galleries (I love the idea of fan art galleries in videogames), extras galore, etc. And is it me or does this game have better graphics than SCII? They're so much more colorful, crisp, and vibrant; the backgrounds in particular have a more "lively" appearance. If they threw in the Edge Master mode as it appeared in SB/SE (with the seperate storylines for each character) and removed a few characters (Lizardman and Astoroth) this would be perfection. As it stands, it -MIGHT- be my favorite game ever; certainly my favorite 3D fighting game. SCII was a huge let-down for me, personally.

King's Quest -- I've only played 5, 6, and a bit of 7, but I LOVED 6. The voice acting, art, and atmosphere were very well-done.

Mega Man (classic, X series, et. all) -- X1. This game is really underrated because everyone seems to just pile it into the "Mega Man ver. 1.9" heap. On its own it's as good a shoot-em-up side-scroller as they come. The music is rockin', the graphics are sweet (both are better than the other SNES entries in the series), the control is TIGHT, and the storyline is quite engrossing (too bad it repeated itself ad nauseum as the series went on). I think this should have been a one-shot title with no sequels (that isn't to say I didn't enjoy the others -- X4 and X6 were both great games -- but this title just stands so well on its own feet).

I seriously beat Kefka on my first try, and it took me hours to beat X-Death, even after dying three times.

And I forgot how you don't like SS4 either...

Final Fantasy - Final Fantasy 10, nothing to really complain about. I liked the game, I liked the storyline, I liked the graphics and sound. Plus Penance is the hardest optional boss in any FF.

Fatal Fury - Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, it is by far the most balanced out of all the Real Bout games, although I do play the others for fun as usual.

Samurai Shodown - Samurai Shodown 3, it introduced Basara the executioner who is my favourite.

Resident Evil - Resident Evil 3, the other games never really gave me a sense of survival, it was always find the best weapon and shoot. But in RE 3 ammo was scarce, you had to run to survive with Nemmy constantly on your trail. It was just brilliantly designed. The dodge button was a sweet idea as well since it allowed for more impressive visuals and greater action.

Tekken - Tekken 4, I liked the introduction of the new characters, the speed improvement, the walls, the sidestep enhancements, the recovery and obviously the new moves and costumes. I still enjoy Tekken Tag but it plays incredibly slow after playing Tekken 4.

Sonic - Knuckles in Sonic 3, well I would have chosen Sonic and Knuckles but I liked Sonic 3 more. The Sonic series oozes gameplay. I do like the 3D sonic games but they have way too many bugs.

Dynasty Warriors - Dynasty Warriors 4, it was the latest installment and it really feels like the best one too. The levels change depending on your actions in previous levels. Character bodyguards, siege weapons and character recognition was introduced. The way the battles unfold is more accurate and the level designs are all round better than ever. Also the characters themselves have a special 1st charge attack and they are more balanced.

You must be on crack. Luclin totally threw off the whole world, at least in my server. The Bazaar sucked ass, lagged like a fuck. PC was like an exp whore zone, I went like 14-24 in two days. And Planes of Power was downright dumb. I mean, CLICK ON MAH BOOK TO GO TO A PALCE. what kinda shit is that. It took all the traveling away, which use to be pretty fun. And yes, druids and wizards got fucked.

Best expansion, at least for Everquest, was easily Kunark.
