Out of the many series out there, what game do you feel is the best out of them? When I say 'series', I mean there are at least 3 games, not something like Last Blade where there's just 1 and 2. I'll kick off a few, with a few comments for each:
Final Fantasy - Final Fantasy VI:
This was the pinnacle of the series. Just a straightforward solid story with great characters, nice art, and cool extras. Some people may say FF7, but I will always stand firmly beside this RPG as the best out of the Final Fantasy series, and perhaps of all time.
Fatal Fury - Real Bout Fatal Fury 2:
Regardless of what others say, RB2 doesn't miss a beat. It has a true arcade feel of "get in there, kick ass, and move onto the next guy". Great combos, it has Rick and Xiangfei, and I love the line system tons more in this game. Eat your heart out, RBS.
Samurai Shodown - Samurai Shodown 2:
What a classic. The gameplay is just perfect oldschool without it being too old to be able to enjoy thoroughly and repeatedly. This is hard for many games to do, but SS2 does it with ease and style. SNK knew what the fuck they were doing when they programmed this gem.
Street Fighter - Super Street Fighter 2 X:
Probably the best fighter of all time. It's balanced, has the characters you've grown to love, a badass engine, supers, and the introduction of Gouki. There's a reason this is still played in tournaments today, and it sure isn't the nostalgia factor that many people have for the older games they play.
Mario Bros. - Super Mario World:
This is like SMB3, but on crack. Really, it just doesn't get much better than this in terms of platformers. It has the sexy 16bit graphics that's easy on the eyes and the sweet gameplay that's found in few games. Plus it has Yoshi. Let's not talk about SMW2 though.. I still have nightmares about that game.
King of Fighters - King of Fighters '98:
The grandaddy of all KOFs. It has the gameplay of 3-on-3 without the strikers to get it too goofy. I'd lean much towards 2K2 if it wasn't for the fact that a lot of the f+attack moves were taken out, which were just nice and fun to use in combos. '98 also has crazy damage ratio, with many easy 75%-100% combos, granted you're stocked up. It has everything the other KOFs have plus the stuff they need to really make them shine.
Metroid - Super Metroid:
Throughout the Metroid saga, no game has stood taller than Super Metroid. It has the graphics that the NES versions were lacking and the gameplay that strayed away from the Gamecube version. Some may say Prime is more deserving, but it doesn't feel like a Metroid game. Super Metroid is probably in my top 5 games of all time. The music, weapons, graphics, everything.. it's just so perfect.
Virtua Fighter - Virtua Fighter Evolution:
I'm slowly beginning to see why this game is being loved by everybody. Honestly, none of the VF games were able to grab my attention. They just weren't fun. Some people said the series has a tough learning curve and it's not easy to just jump into it and start whooping ass, but I was able to do that in VF:EO, somewhat. I picked this up the other day at Spinmaster's recommendation and been having fun with the little features such as quest mode and such. Hopefully I'll have better insight to this incredible game once he shows me more, but right now I really do have to say this game appeals more to me than the others ever could, combined.
Mortal Kombat - Mortal Kombat 2:
The Mortal Kombat series has become a bit of a joke over the years. Gone are the days when you'd tell your friends to meet you at the arcade to play some MK without any of you laughing. MK2 is the best, easily. MK1 didn't have the gameplay. Nobody played it because it was fun to play, it was all just for the fatalities. MK3 tried to make the gameplay too happening with the dial-a-combos that just weren't fun, and the run button just seems weird, along with the block button. MK2 has the old style gameplay that actually made you think of combos and other little stuff, instead of memorizing button movements to mash in order to make your 9 hit combo come about. MK2 is the only MK where I don't think about stupid fatalities or dial-a-combos, and just straight gameplay.
Tekken - Tekken Tag:
Tag is the best, easily. Too many glitches in 4 to be considered, but 4 is still a sweet game in it's own right. There's no need for 3 since Tag is much more improved over it. The stuff you can do in this game is crazy and fun, and with another skilled player going against you the hours just whizz by. This is probably my favorite fighter at the moment.
So yeah, you can tell I'm bored. It beats trolling the War Room though. Anybody else got anything they wanna add? Series I didn't hit? Disagree? Think O.J. was really innocent? Post your shit.
