I've always imagined Toad's genitals to be soft and pliable so it could morph into whatever gender the situation demanded. Obviously, Toad is a big hit at parties.

Well considering Toad is a fungus, I assume it's asexual. Creates little Toads by shitting out spores.

Hmmm possibly!

Am I the only one who though it was a girl?

Well, it is supposed to be a dude, and my proof is that in Paper Mario, they make female mushroom people look pink or have ribbons or aprons. Without that they are presumed to be male.

EGM ran a joke interview with Toad, trying to answer this same question, years ago, the results were inconclusive...

The character's original Japanese name is Kinopio? Heh, that's clever. The Japanese word for mushroom is kinoko, and ki-no-pi-o is a slight rearrangement of pi-no-ki-o (Pinocchio). The only Mario games I was ever into were Donkey Kong, DK Jr., DK 3, and the original Mario Bros., so I've never looked into the English-vs-Japanese character names in the later games. Just thought that was vaguely amusing/interesting.

The other Nintendo name I found clever was "waruigi". He's the evil version of Luigi (ruigi in JPN). Think about it... very cute.

So, a mushroom walks into a bar. "Bartender, how much for a drink," he says. The bartender says, "We don't serve your kind here, get out,".

"Hey, why not? Come on, Im a Fungi"

Thanks, eight one -- I'd completely forgotten about this cosplay. This is a photo of Tristen Citrine, a well-known cosplay diva who became a Las Vegas resident a few years back. She's best buds with neo-geo.com's own Honeychan (that's Honeychan dressed as Mario in the bottom pic).
