too bad not many gamers got to play this gem ...so what other rpgs out there are slept on?

Vagrant Story - one of the best (if not the best) Squaresoft rpgs ever. Everything about this game is great.

Many people say that... Along with XenoGears... But with the new RPGs they release today, will they still appeal me?....

If you can figure out the combat system, you will LOVE Vagrant Story. Or as I like to call it, Square Soft at it's best

I would have to go with Lagoon for the SNES. Never heard much about the game besides when I played it. I think I will have to track that game down again, I only rented it like every other week.

Really... Cuz I think Chrono Trigger was SquareSoft at its best!... :p I'd like to pick up Vagrant Story or XenoGears, but they're just so hard to find now...

Earthbound because of its quirkyness, but my favorite rpg of all time has to be arc the lad collection, i could play that game forever and have plenty left to do in it. Thanks to working designs for bringing it over!! :buttrock:

Dark Wizard for Sega CD is one of my fav RPGs. Cool cut scenes tell the story, awesome music, and killer strategic gameplay. Four different rulers to select. Each with unique gameplay elements. Makes it very interesting and fun to play through the game multiple times.

My only complaint would be its a tad to easy. Still incredibly fun to play.

Completely slept-on RPGs that deserve better:

AnEarth Fantasy Stories (aka Seiya Monogatari) - PC Engine SCD, ported to Saturn

Kokuu Hyouryuu Nirgends - Windows 95-JPN and PC-FX

Breath of Fire V is my favorite RPG ever, and it was trashed by most. It just has the best story and premise ever. It's a survival RPG, so you have to actually try really hard to make it through. You can actually lose the game and be forced to restart, though you open more cutscenes for starting over and some things carry over, so you didn't waste your time or anything.

The idea of the game is that a long time ago people retreated to the underground because of some war or whatever that ruined the world above. Now, basically the whole underground society is a giant polluted slum. The people on the lowest levels are the grunts and live with the most pollution. The people up top have it better, but no one can leave. You find out why if you play. Basically there are a million and a half safeguards and a bunch of powerful rulers to keep people locked in. Your character is one of the lowest grunts who lives at the bottom city. You end up saving a frail little girl from a genetically engineered killing monster and it turns out that she's also a genetic experiment. She was built to be a walking air filter, basically. Unless she gets fresh air, she's going to die. Well, the only way that could happen would be to get out! But you're a lowly runt on the lowest levels of this ugly hellish place! AHH and so it begins, a super hard climb to the top which really makes you feel the direness of the situation by making it so that everything is in short supply and by creating a very sad world. I was totally into busting out of that place and I didn't want to quit til I had won. What makes this whole survival thing go is that you only get a few permanent saves. You can make temporary saves anytime, but in the whole game you're only allowed something like 12 saves depending on how many save tokens you find. No cheesing your way out by reloading over and over! You REALLY feel the suspense when you're up against some tough enemies and you don't know if you'll live, and if you don't you'll either have to reload from some part far back or you'll have to start over! You can use your dragon power and you're basically invincible, but you have a limit on it where if you use it too much you literally will be forced to start all over.

Great game! Oh, and, it's sort of Metroidish in that if you were playing with a PAR and had on some crazy codes that let you be super powerful, you could just run through the whole game in like 2 hours maybe. What I mean is that reaching the end is a matter of how fast you can make your way up there. It took me over 20 hours before I managed to win once, but it's cool that the game isn't bogged down by tons of filler.

Look on Square's website. I ordered Xenogears about two months ago brand new for $40.00. They had Vagrant Story as well. Actually, they had just about every PS1 game they released, if not all.

Also, it's good to see Sword of Vermillion getting some notice around here, or anywhere for that matter. That was one of the first RPGs I ever played, and it's still good. All it needs is a GBA port.

I liked Xenogears when I first played it. I was pretty young at the time and new to games. In retrospect it was a great game with an awesome story that was ruined by shitty translation.

xenogears was fucking lame to the extreme. i bought it on release and it was too fucking lame.

if u have the means, buy the original square release. IE FF and Chrono Trigger on the SNES is better than the PSX counterparts. no loading. perfect graphics. no bugs, etc.

awesome low que RPGs? look no further than:

Earthbound (SNES): from the wierd scratch and sniff advertisements to the wierdX2 game, this game was fucking wierd. but cool.

Shadowrun (SNES): more of an action RPG. u can hire bodyguards to travel around with u. hella fun and total cyberpunk so that makes it more badass. better than Genesis game by the same name (totally different games).

Lunar 1 & 2 (SEGA CD): back in the day these were tops. being on the Sega CD they didnt see much action and they prolly havent aged too well but they still rock. best characters of all time.

The Langrisser series (SNES, Genesis/CD, Saturn, Dreamcast): the timeless epic of monster proportions. this is definately a strategy game but u for a party, equip your generals, buy items, choose classes, etc. u just move along a grid in turn based combat. very fun and anime gfx and grat music. only domestic release was Warsong for the Genesis.

Tales of Destiny (PSX): I played this game way back when. old school 2D gfx and the 2D fightergame-type battles were very cool (complete with combos, specials, etc. just like a fighting game).

so many more but whatever.

oh yeah try FF7 i heard that was pretty good. :tickled:

Slept on?

Don't you mean sleeper?

Anyhow, I will agree that Dark Wizard on the Sega CD is probably the biggest sleeper hit RPG on that system.

I'll have to go with Earthbound. This has to be one of the most fun RPGs I've played. I think the blatant bathroom humor made it all the more fun for me.

"Don't break the winds of change!"

"No pitching of tents in this vicinity."

There's also Der Langrisser FX on the PC-FX.
