Hi,
Well, since SVC's delay, I decided to go try it out at Nickel City in Northbrook. First of all, I'll comment on the game and then the arcade itself.....
The game was great. I can understand though when people say the hit detection is off at times. I thought the opening comments were hilarious and there is definetely a good selection of characters on both sides. I played as Mai, Shiki, Genjuro, and Ryu and kept getting beat up by some guy who played Geese. Overall, I liked the game quite a bit and am still looking forward to getting the AES cart so I can get better at it!! Then maybe I'll take a trip back to the arcade for competition....
Now....on to the arcade itself. Nickel City sucks fairly badly....They do have some good games, and they have a decent selection of freeplay games (which kept my wife busy along with Dance Dance Revolution...still don't understand why people like that game....). Many of their joysticks at Nickel City are in bad need of repair. A Street Fighter Alpha machine I played was missing the hard kick button....
Also...the guy at the counter was fairly rude. I've never been to Nickel City so I didn't understand how Free Play Friday worked. First of all, apparently it only applies to Fighting Games. You have to Pay $2 a person to get in also (which isn't bad, but I remember being able to walk into an arcade in the early 90's and only have to pay for the games....). You also have to pay an additional $5 to play the Fighting Games all night, which again isn't bad...but there is no sign anywhere in the arcade that explains this system.
Anyway, I paid my admission fee and the guy told me in order to use my Credit Card he would have to charge $10 to my card. I bought two five dollar bags of nickels and the admission on the card. I then said "Fighting Games are free tonight, right?" Instantly he took up an attitude with me and said, "I wish you would have told me earlier you wanted the Fighting Games. You have to pay $5 for the Fighting Games". So, now I was getting mad because I've never been there before and once again, no sign to explain it, so how the hell was I supposed to know? I made him charge five bucks onto my card for the Fighters, but I think I got screwed out of my Entrance fee of $2 because it is supposed to be included in the Fighting Game charge.
Anyway, my final rating of Nickel City is: Damn, I need to find a new arcade around here with SVC! Nickel City sucks!
