How many people here think that their favorite games are just something that they were in awe of as a child? I remember when Mario 64 came out and I couldn't believe that mario could swim in the water beside the castle (in the store demo version), then Mario Sunshine (which was basically the same core with lots of new things added) came out and I didn't really find it remarkable. Do you think if some games that are coming out today, came out when you were a kid, you would have liked them more?

Gamer's apathy, I suppose...

Short answer: No.
Long answer: No, because I've played games on the Neo I had no idea even existed as a child and I like them infinitely more than most 3-D offerings. Perhaps then, its a predisposition toward liking 2-D games instead of 3-D.

It's mainly an argument of imagination versus realism.

I'd rather have the former.

The older games/game consoles seem more magical to me (master system/playstation/snes)

olld games are grea.t some new games are tgreat too, but only if they leave a lot to the imagination or use a lot f the techniques that older games used to use. for example, games like pno3 or vietwuful joe, when they're micim a olot of the older games playing style. that kind of shit is cooll

also , atmoshperhic games are oetty legit, because they suck you in. recent examples are metroid prime and halo. i'd probly enjoy them even if i lived in a satelite of love.

Wait. You were a kid when Mario 64 came out?

Well, that was seven - going on eight years ago now.

Growing up I was mostly playing Atari 2600, then the NES showed up and began a different kind of gaming experience.

No longer was I trying to roll the score. Now I'm playing games (Zelda) where I can actually see definition in the characters appearance instead of a single color 8 pixel block on the screen. What's that I'm seeing, OMG WTF, I'm reading some dialogue here? TWO BUTTONS! One for my sword, one for my boomerang, s**t this is just too much. And don't even get me started on the music upgrade from Atari 2600 to the NES, forget about it:drool:

Remember when instruction manuals had hand-drawn pictures next to the sprites? That was so one could tell what one was supposed to be stabbing or shooting.

Well even though i was a adult by the time the megadrive came out, i remember i pre ordered it when it was packaged with the first sonic game, after waiting a week the store got them in and when i took it home and plugged it in i was in awe, compared to the shitty master system i had this game looked state of the art and everytime i heard the word SEGA as the system booted up it made me happy.

I had many happy times ,

best game i ever played as a child though has to be ladybug. that game was soooooo cool where you could get extra lifes and extra credits by eating special coloured letters,

I had a Nintendo Power subscription back then. The first strategy guide I got was for Dragon Warrior. Man, that guide is awesome, with all the artwork that was put into it:drool_2:

Manuals were awesome for the NES, definitely. The art in the manuals almost gave the classic 2D characters a 3D-type aspect, very memorable very cool.

But what do we have these days? Manuals only having screen shots since technology has advanced to a point where artwork is held aside and sold seperately.

I had to laugh at that... It's so funny because it's true. I liked it back in the day when Nintendo would put crappy art on the box which basically showed what the graphics looked like.
IE... Super Mario, Excitebike, Rad Racer ect...
They were not afraid of the crappy look. But I guess back then when you compair it to atari it kicked ass.

Nintendo Power.....

That was such a self-serving handjob of a magazine. Didn't stop me form subscribing tho

But yes, the art was nice. I remember all the super mario 3 maps and whatnot I got.
