Does anyone have suggestions for a USB (or FireWire - not sure if these exist) controller? I'd need it to work with Mac OS X - I've seen tons of them at various computer stores, but all have either ridiculous layouts or dpads that can't be of much use. Is there a gamepad out there that adequately duplicates a console pad?

Just buy a PSX to USB converter. They dont break like PC pads do.

Yeah, an XBox controller. :D :D

Its very easy to hack a XBox controller over to straight USB. Plus there are drivers for OS X (though I haven't seen them in action).

Yeah, I'm using a Elecom PSX to USB converter.

Works like a charm.

PS Avoid the Microsoft pads. I bought and used a Sidewinder for a few months... it seriously was the worst piece of crap I'd ever used in my life. Pulling off fireballs was a real chore, and dragon punches were impossible.

Ive found that every single computer specific USB gamepad sucks bigtime.
I picked up a playstation to USB converter at radioshack for $10, and it seems to work great out of the box w/ OSX.

Cheers folks - I'll pick up a PSX-USB converter tomorrow if I can find one around.
