Why would you want to ripoff what may become the biggest disaster in gaming history.

IN all seriousness, the Zodiac has been common knowledge for quite some time. It's based on the Palm OS and has even been reviewed in some gaming mags.

No way, I personally like the joystick. Plus, there's a $300 and a $400 one. The whole point of this PDA is a game machine, PDA (duh!) and play mp3s and video. It sort of is a competition to GBA, but not necessarily. It does have a really nice screen too!!

That's like a Korean ripoff of a Hong Kong knockoff.

I'm buying one of those. I actually almost pre ordered it yesterday but decided to wait a bit longer. This thing is way better than the N-Gage. Plus a kick ass PDA. And... I think I may even get rid of my GP32 after getting this thing. Only draw back... I hear playing commercial games that take the full use of the Zodiac's capabilities the battery life is only around 3 hrs.
Using it as a PDA it will last a week. Or as an MP3 player a day.

I not out to pass judgement on any of the handhelds just yet, but I was shocked to see just how small the N-Gage's screen really is. I didn't believe it until I saw it myself.

Zodiac being based on the Palm OS is an advantage as there are already thousands of homebrew (and commercial) titles available for it. Yes, even Sega has developed Palm OS before even the Zodiac was officially announced.

well since I'm now a target employee I'm gonna snatch them up as soon as they hit the clearence bin (and they're gonna hit hard!!!). Let's face it these days people have troubles buying a 300 game system for home use. Why would they want to buy something that costs even more, and has even less in the way of technology?

clearence + employee discount = :buttrock:

Exactly! I'm not passing judgment on the Zodiac handheld by Tapwave. It seems like a decent system, but what is it exactly? Should we call it a game system or an expensive PDA? The Tungsten C by Palm is just as expensive, and it’s a better piece of hardware, too, with a faster processor. Sure you don’t have the convenience of a large screen or rumble force feedback, but who really cares?

I was just laughing at the way Tapwave is advertising their unit. They come out of nowhere with unknown titles like Phantom Strike and expect us to get excited. I will wait patiently for the Zodiac; if the system is ANY good (i.e. good meaning they have better games than the ones mentioned on their web site) then I will be the first in line to buy one. Otherwise, I am not impressed! It's going to take more than Tony Hawk 4 to justify the hefty price tag.

• ATI Imageon W4200 2D graphics accelerator with 8MB VRAM - includes MPEG-4 and JPEG hardware decoding functions
• 3.8 inch, 480 x 320 transflective backlit LCD display with touch screen and "Virtual Graffiti" functionality, 16-bit (65,536 colors)

This is what seperates the Tapewave from a standard PDA. No other PDA ises a graphics accelerator and the highest resolution has been 320x320. So you get more power than Palms Tungsten C at around the same price.
This is more of a moble power users wet dream than anything.

You're really making me laugh a lot right now. The whole point of the Zodiac is a gamer who also wants a PDA and an mp3 player also with the ability to watch video. This is providing competition for Nintendo, but it's not really supposed to, it's supposed to really provide competition to PDAs. Don't plan on it to hit clearance anytime in the near future. N-Gage, although, is a different story, if you really want such a piece of shit. BTW, does it even have any original games?

Even less in the way of technology? Last time I checked, the GBA didn't have cell phone capabilities, a built in radio, bluetooth, MP3 playback, etc. This is an alternative to the mature gamer/mobile professional who wants something other than a GBA. I'm not saying I will buy an N-Gage, but you're not looking at it from a rational point of view. How many people upgrade their cell phones just to have the latest color screen and wireless technology? Well, this is part of the target market that Nokia hopes to capture.

I'm more concerned about the software right now. It sounds like a decent system (I like the MP3 playback capability, too), but I want more for my $300+, you know? Has anyone seen a software release list for the system yet? Do we know of any heavy-hitters like Capcom developing for the system?

I was actually comparing it to the other devices that retailed at 300. Things such as the ps2 and xbox. Fuck even the gamecube is better. Maybe the N64 too

I understand your rationale, but you can't really compare these things to a home system. Home systems technically aren't portable in the way that a handheld is. You pay a premium for portability, as was the case with Laptop computers and to some degree, high end PDA's.

maybe I'd just been spoiled with the sega nomad. That was a TRUE 100 dollar portable (and I'd bought it when it was released)

The Zodiac looks better, but I'd rather get the N-Gage because its going to have more support.

Let's think this through:

Lynx = no support = dead

Game Gear = no support = dead

Game Boy = support = still alive

Even though the Gameboy was black and white, and inferior to those other handhelds, the support caused it to survive. As of right now, the N-Gage has A LOT more support then the Zodiac, not to mention the N-Gage is being heavily marketed at trade shows, videgame outlets, and cellular phone outlets.

Not to mention commercials and print ads are forthcoming.

So from a business point of view, I'd rather put my money into the N-Gage, then a commercially unknown device.

My guess would be anything that runs on Palm OS 5.2 since that is what it is running. Try looking here for Software

Does anyone really play games on handhelds while on the road? I did it when I was about 9 years old, and maybe 3 times since.

I jist recently went to CA for a buisness trip and got totally caught up in playing Wario ware on my GBA SP during the flight. Also used my Dell Axim to listen to MP3's during the flight as well.
