THe CDZ is faster, but from what I understand, less reliable, and more prone to breaking.

Dont have one myself, so I dont really know for sure, I only have the standard top loader.

I've owned both the CDZ and NGCD,and to this day,I still can't tell the difference between the loading times.

CDZ might be a tad faster, but not at all noticeable.

Here's an advice:

Stay far and away from the newer fighting games!

Load times are......... ..........:annoyed: ...:spock: ........ .....:mad_2: ........:oh_no:

Yeah...BIG is right on the loading times for newer fighting games... Especially Last blade 2... should be called Long loading blade 2.

Older games work real well on cdz like Nam1975. Loads real quick. I think first generation neo geo games are great on it since they are a lot smaller than the fighting games.

CDZ is a little faster from what i hear but i hear its not a double speed cdrom as SNK tried to market it as...

Still a cool system to have anyways especially to play the CD only titles such as Samurai Spirits RPG, Ironclad, Futsal, and especially Crossed Swords II!!!

The top loader is an old war horse, you gotta have fuktard problems to break it, mines been smashed all over, dropped many times, still runs all the games perfect.

The pads may break, the spring might go in the lid.....but as long as you have a stick the machine will run forever in my experience.

Yeah it is nice to have even just to look at or to add to your collection. I haven't had any problems with the cdz at all (at least not yet). I would eventually like to get the front loading NGCD someday or a US system. I hear those don't break down as much.

All in all, I think the CDZ is a great system too. I think as long as you take good care of it and clean it regularly, and not drop it, it should give you plenty of good times ahead.

I have owned several CDZ's and Top-Loaders. I have had issues in the past with CDZ Systems, even new ones, and I am anal about my systems and keep them clean. For reliability get a Top-Loader. I have never had an issue my Top-Loaders and they are very nice and sturdy. CDZ is faster, but I would prefer reliability over faster load times.

I dont get it. I heard so many bad things about cd systems... I got my CDZ expecting it to be something for me just to play the cheaper older games on. But I love my CD system. The sound on it is awesome, 10 times better then my home system with stereo mod. I think it is a great system and it is getting twice the play time my cart or MVS is getting.

Yeah, I love my CD System and it gets most of my play time. I just decided the CDZ is not for me. Bad luck 3 times with I/O Errors and so on. Never had an issue with my Top-Loader. Love it.

That's the point. Speed is nothing without reliabilty. As others have pointed out, the lil' extra loading speed you get is not worth the extra money.

My standard top loader has been bought on release and never failed so far, it's a really good piece of hardware, and the internal pcb setup is clean and very modding-friendly, something I really miss in today's breed of consoles with all their anti-tampering crap.

One very good question though..... is there anyone on the forum who can fix a damaged CD unit???

I mean, lets say the lazer lens goes out... is there anyone who has the skills to replace the lens?

I remember the day the lens went in mine, i had my dad look at it and the system still had all the power working but it wouldnt read nothing and i had to throw it away as couldnt find anyone to fix it

might have been different if it was a playstation but with the neo cd being virtually unheard of at most electronic places it was futile

It really is a better choice to get the cdz though unless you want to sit through 40 seconds of loading each time on savage reign

Does a Jap Neo Geo CD play US games in English? Or would it need to be modded?

My JPN Top-Loader plays English games in JPN. Some text shows as English though.

The machine is what determines the language. All of the software is the same.

Jap CD's in US machines play in English.

US games in Jap machines play in Japanese.

Etc.

I prefer my Neo geo CD over the neo CDZ anyday
no matter how faster the loading time on the cdz is.
