I'm thinking about getting a laptop computer for school. I want something very light (under 4 1/2 lbs). What are some good models? Also, should I avoid iMacs at all costs or are they good laptops?

Well, no, iMacs don't make very good laptops (lol) but iBooks do. They are light weight and have an excellent screen on them.

If you're looking for a light weight Windows laptop, Dell makes the Inspiron 300m that weighs ~3lbs.

Along with the Latitude X300 at 2.9 lbs or the Latitude C400 starting in at 3.6lbs.

Whether you buy a Dell or whatever, I highly recommend an extended warranty. Laptops aren't easily repaired with off the shelf parts like desktop systems are. If you plan on keeping it for more than a year, the extra $150+ for the warranty is a must. Laptops also have the misfortune of being carried around, so they tend to take more abuse than a normal desktop PC as well.

Just my $.02

Dell would be my choice for a windows based machine. I had a Powerbook several years ago and it was great, so Apple comes recommended highly also. Stay away from HP, the one I had was shitty and customer service flat out sucks. I have a Toshiba now, and although I like it alot, it's very heavy, and just recently my 1 year warranty expired just in time for my hard drive to crash, cost me almost $400 in repairs. So I guess the lesson here is, buy an extended warranty. Good luck.:)

Thanks for all the advice! On the ibooks, how fast do they run (as they are based on 900mhz CPUs). Also, is it difficult finding programs compatible with the MacOS?
(I'm leaning towards an ibook, since they are nicer looking (I would say cuter, but..) :D

its not the same cpu as windows, so the clock speeds cant be compared. The 900MHz G3 should be fast enough for anything short of heavy graphics work or the latest 3d games.

And there is no problem getting software for a Mac. except for some games.
