With all the talk of FF7 DVDs and whatnot, it all came flooding back to me, the best aspect of this fine RPG: the fucking amazingly fun snowboarding mini-game in the Golden Saucer. I must've played that for hours in 97.

Best mini-game ever.

Anyone else remember this fondly?

I remember it. The motorcycle mini-game was my favorite, though.

Do I love the old FFs? Yes. Before I continue, I used to be a HUUUUUGE Final Fantasy fan. I treat the FF series the way I do the Simpsons. They started out pretty good, got fantastic/better than just about anything ever, and then played themselves out until they started to stink. Sure, they didn't "stink" stink, but compared to what they used to be, it will never be the same.

Now, with all that said, I admit that I like FF7. Hell, I like it a lot. I played FF7 a ton when it came out. I think FF7 almost deserves all the praise it gets. I still think 4 is the best, but it seems "cool" to hate FF7 nowadays.

Whatever,
Spike

FF7 is my fav game, ever.

Regarding mini game, I like raising Chocobo the most, especially when you finally get the gold one.

Loopz said it best, FF7 ushered in the PSX as the dominant console and mainstream gamers into RPG's and in gaming in general for some cases.

That's why "the hardcore" hate FF7 and to an extent Sony.

Fuck that bullshit, fuck it in the ass, without lube.

FF7 = God's gift to RPG's, after it they will never be the same again. And they're better because of it.

My favorite was the roller coaster ride in the Golden saucer. I got SO obsessed with getting the maximum number of points. And it is HARD to do.

Man... all this talk lately kinda makes me want to play through the "neo-classics" again (7 and 8). I'll have to see how they look on my XBox with Progressive Scan. ;) Only thing that might get me down is the loading...

Kinda makes me feel bad, too - seems everyone else did the chocobo racing to get Knights and what not, and I completely skipped it! I didn't slack off with the card game in 8, though - it was just so much more effective and fun that "drawing".

No love for FF MQ? What a shame, MQ was for the SNES what FFT was for PSX:loco:

Anyway yes, much love for FFIV-VI here. They are without a doubt the best games in the series. And of course FFVII is great, that almost goes without saying.

That is the best way I have ever heard the hate for FFVII explained to me. Now if you can only explain to me the hate for 8,9, and 10.

I popped in FFVII last night for the first time in 5 or 6 years. Sure, the load times are noticeable, and in this age of Xbox's the graphics aren't going to win any awards, but the game just oozes total style - the best atmosphere, music, and feel. I really disliked 8, 9, and 10, but 7 I still love. And the snowboarding game still rules.

Thanks.

FF8 gets hate because well it's NOT on par with the rest. I hate it a good deal because it had SO MUCH going for it!

A military styled FF game in a futuristic setting? AWESOME!
The Music? Some of the BEST!
The story? Weak as hell to begin with and it had SHITLOADS of translation problems.

No real villian to hate/kill. And drawing magic sucked. At least you can say they tried to innovate, they just did it all wrong.

*******************

FF9. People who hate FF9 deserve to be shot. The game is so good. It's not the greatest FF game ever, but it's damn good and far better than most of the other RPG's out there (especially at the time).

Great characters, decent story, decent ENDING, fun combat system, a really nice throw back almost to the roots of the series. I loved it.

*******************

FFX. Almost the same exact reason people hate FF7, cept this time with PS2. This is a good RPG, I like 9 more though. I hate the US voice actors and I'd have killed for a Japanese Voice/English Sub of this game. Blitzball sucked, story was good, decent villians, characters (on the whole) were also good.

But yeah, it's a gorgeous game - on PS2. It also helped sell the system at launch, especially in Japan where people knew the next FF game was coming out on PS2. This did a lot to kill the DC over there (FF carries that much weight over there).

It also was WAY modern in terms of the style of the game, and quite realistic, that turned a lot of people off, and even got to me to a small extent. All I know is that with FFXII they're going back to FF9's style, so that's all good. They're not staying stagnant with just one style, and they are constantly evolving.

This is why Squaresoft 0wnZ j00!

I feel that same exact way about those 3 games, except for I thought the villians in FFX were kinda weak. The were good villians for an RPG, but not up to the normal Final Fantasy Standard. Also I am really excited about XII because if you look at the picture you can see creatures that look like the different races from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Or maybe I just have too much time on my hands here at work:p

I hear what you're saying about the various FFs - for me, 8 was a big disappointment since style-wise it had the most potential. Atrocious plot with no appreciable motivation to do anything. 9 I truly hated, but that's just because I didn't like the style of it at all. I played about 2 hrs and dropped it. Too cutesy, etc. The simple, back-to-basics systems were nice though. I understand why people like it a lot; personally, the atmosphere just turned me off from the start. X was OK - amazing graphics, decent music. Horrible characters and the worst story ever sealed the deal for me though. Aside from Xenogears and Einhander, FF7 was the last Square game I actually liked at all.

Swap "FF8" and "FF9" in the first 2 statements, and "US" and "Japanese" in the 3rd.

Now we're cookin'! ;)

There's so much you can get out of 8... yet it's so easy just to catch only what's on the surface. 9 was just... a step back in the evolutionary process. There's nothing wrong with it, but seeing the groudwork they laid in 8 and the extension of that in 10... just makes me wish they didn't go for throwback GAMEPLAY.

As for FFX, Auron and Wakka are soooo much better in english. Wakka was played just like everybody else (boring) and Auron was you generic bad-ass... I much prefer the more eccentric Wakka and the wise/mysterious Auron.

Tidus is better in Japanese, but it's not enough to offset the rest.

FF8 and FF10 were my favourites from the next gen FFs. They felt new and original. FF9 took a step back in time and played like the previous FFs. There was nothing which appealed to me in FF9. It felt like I was watching a Disney film. bah...

FF7 I thought was great, plenty of skills to learn, sidequests, limits, mini games, summons and 2 hidden characters.

man i hate it when people say or assume jp dubbing is ALWAYS better than us dubbing. yeah maybe in that shitty anime but did you ever hear the jp voices in these next gen ff? i think its 10 or 8 i dunno they are all shit but the fucking main character guy sounds like a 7 year old girl the fucking pussy. grow some nuts u piece of shit ur a man! sound like one u cock cracker!

played 7 all the way through. i was caught up in the hype and i enjoyed it a lot at the time but looking back that game is hugely overatted. i love the last battle where u are forced to watch like a TWO FUCKING MINUTE SPELL SEQUENCE EVERY TEN FUCKING SECONDS. i was just amazed with the power of the playstation back in the day so everything seemed fresh and new and cool.

played 8 for a few hours. fucking horrible. not by ff standards, just a fucking horrible boring game.

watched bro play some 9 looked interesting prolly the most promising of next gen ff but bleh.

same with 10.

what are the chances of square releasing a next gen 2D final fantasy? i mean to me square is total and utter shit these days. even with their hardcore beatuful 2D attempts on the PS (legend of mana and that other series) they were so fucking bland and boring even the 2D greatness couldn't save them. i can honestly 100% say i have not LOVED a squaresoft game since the 16bit era. can u honestly say any of their next gen attempts can hold a candle to ff6 or chrono trigger? even by todays standards? pop in some ff6 right now then play some ffx. which is the better game? if u say ffx im gonna kick u in the neck.
