It's been a long, long time since the AES was launched. A bit too long for some of us. Hands up all those who'd love to see a follow-up to our beloved Neo-Geo?
Ok, put your hands down, there's quite a few of you. I have to admit, the second SNKP announced any information regarding a new machine in the works, I would be more than happy to sell everything just to be able to touch one. (Even my beloved Dreamcast, which I have taken to calling "Brian". My girlfriend is less than amused)
But, let's face facts - it can't be exactly like the Neo we all know and love.
First of all, the media on which the games would be stored. I personally love carts, but also believe that SNK would be shooting themselves in the foot if they were to go ahead and use them on a new console. With a rocket launcher.
GD-ROM would be nice, it would be nice to see it adopted by other companies than Sega. Nintendo's proprietary discs would be nicer, but something tells me they're not going to release much information on them that amounts to anything more than "um, they're kinda small".
Controllers: sticks are a necessity, but a good quality pad is going to be useful too. Joe Average Gamer may be a little intimidated by something along the lines of the original Neo-Geo sticks - a nice pad that is actually useful for playing fighting games would come into its own.
Games can make or break a system. In our ideal world, we'd have everything the Hyper64 promised and more. Follow-ups to all the important franchises - Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Metal Slug, KoF, Samurai Shodown - would all need to be made for our hypothetical system, but good third-party support would be ideal. Could one imagine the likes of Konami, Sega, even - dare I say it - Capcom releasing games on an SNK system?
Well, I've raved on long enough. Anyone else got any good ideas? (If we hurry we could get the patents by next Wednesday!)
