GameCube drops to $99

News

Oft-rumored price drop now a reality. Number three console manufacturer enters the Q4 race running. What's up for the Xbox, PS2?

Retail partners Amazon.com and Toys "R" Us have taken the first step in heating up the upcoming fourth-quarter video game business.

The online retailers are now offering the jet black- and indigo-colored GameCube at a margin-busting price of $99.99.

Senior analyst Billy Pidgeon of the Zelos Group commented on the price drop, saying, "If you're going to sell the GameCube for under $149, you're losing money... They're throwing their margin away, basically dumping them."

There is no indication that this price drop is the result of a renegotiation between the retailer and either the manufacturer or distributor.

As far as Sony and Microsoft are concerned, Pidgeon says Sony is likely to be unfazed by the price drop. However, Pidgeon says, "Microsoft should care. They could lose the number two position, which is very important for Microsoft [to maintain]."

Pidgeon added that the price drop will certainly have an impact on fourth-quarter retail sales but that competitive price drops across the board would be required to see substantial increases to anticipated Q4 sales.

Pidgeon said, "Fourth quarter is the perfect time to use a price cut. It would really energize the market if there were price cuts this quarter."

I just came back from Best Buy. Sony is now bundling a game with their PS2 Combo Pack.

Microsoft has not (yet) made a move.

That's badass. Some of the coolest games ever, now for the cheapest console around. Anyone that likes games should get one :)

Well, it's official. There is officially no reason NOT to own a gamecube. With titles like Metroid Prime, PN03, Soul Caliber 2, and F-Zero ( not to mention some of their great first gen stuff) I can't think of a reason NOT to own this system. Yet, i'm sure there's somebody out there that's not gonna touch this system simply because it's nintendo...sad.

I don't think a price reduction to $99 will make any difference in the status of the GC on the console market. Remember $50 (the amount it was reduced ) is the price of one brand new game at full price, or two cheap games. Big deal . . . people will buy the GC if they like the games, and they won't if they don't. Personally, I still don't see a reason to buy one, but maybe when it gets totally dumped @$50 I'll think about it. I think the GC is pretty much near the end of its life and Nintendo knows it, so they're looking forward to a better system next time maybe. :annoyed:

i bought the cube the day it was released; and i've loved it since, i don't see any reason why people didn't buy it then, and why they wont buy it now. i mean lets look at this situation, nintendo=good company, well known for making good games+capcom's support+sega's support+great first party stuff+the low price=even better deal than it originally was.

the local ebs over by my place is stocking a packin a
tetris and starwars double disc similar to the jetset
and SEGA GT double double. except double not as much fun.
but for giving out with an xbox system anyways.
game cube for 99 dollars though.
dunno. i d still argue its not a contender though with its line up.
after mario kart they have absolutely nothing of intrest slated
for next year. and btw. i like the gc. but all this stringing
1st party and SEGA games for a scant once every 1 or two months at
a time is pretty shitty. i m surprised it hasnt died off.
in my opinion the DC had more going for it.

Actually come to think of it, this isn't a price drop at all. Amazon and TRU just unbundled the extra stuff that used to come with the system (either GBA player or some games), and are selling the system by itself. Since the old cost was $150 for the GC plus the extra stuff, a new price of $99 for the GC alone is no big deal at all. The only good thing about it is that you can buy the system alone without getting junk bundled with it that you don't want . . . wow, really exciting.

Well, I for one consider this great news. I've had one financial disaster hit right after the other, so getting a Cube a while back, among other games I wanted, always got put off. Now, the only set-back I have is I'm out of work! :annoyed: :tickled:

Once I get me a new job, that Cube is as good as bought. Star Fox Adventures, Super Monkey Ball, PSO episodes 1 and 2, here I come!:glee:

For those of you who care.
I think many people will buy one now. Some people could not justify buying a $150 system for only 2-3 games.

GameCube Now $99.
Nintendo officially drops the price of the GameCube.
Tuesday September 23, 2003 | hardcore_pawn

Only $99.99
After much speculation, Nintendo has today officially dropped the price of the GameCube to $99.99. That's around $80 less than both Sony's PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox. Will the other consoles follow suit? It's possible that we might hear something towards the holidays, but for now, here's the official statement from Nintendo.

Just in time for the biggest video game thrills of the fall, Nintendo of America Inc. today announced a new MSRP of $99.99 for its Nintendo GameCube(TM) home game console, effective tomorrow, Sept. 25. This great new price opens an $80 price advantage over its two console competitors.

While the price of Nintendo GameCube hardware is falling, the variety and affordability of great software is soaring. Coupled with expansion of the Nintendo GameCube library to more than 320 games by the end of the year, the new MSRP of $99.99 and added exclusive offers will further boost momentum for the console throughout the holidays.

Mario Kart(R): Double Dash!!(TM), available Nov. 17 exclusively for Nintendo GameCube, is the most-anticipated game of the season. Nintendo has announced that customers who reserve a copy of the game in advance will receive a free bonus disc, loaded with game footage and gameplay previews for a wide array of upcoming hits.

In addition, Nintendo recently expanded the Player's Choice library offering discounted prices for a half dozen award winning games including Super Mario Sunshine(TM), Animal Crossing(TM) and Metroid(R) Prime.

"So far in 2003, Nintendo GameCube is the only home console showing an increase in unit sales compared to 2002," says George Harrison, senior vice president, marketing and corporate communications, Nintendo of America. "Every time a generation of technology has moved into the true mass market, Nintendo has prospered. This incredible new price and our great software offers are designed to accelerate that trend like never before."

"This is not only good for Nintendo, but great for consumers," says Lucky Evani, Toys 'R Us representative. "For $99, you can now buy video game technology that you couldn't have purchased for $99,000 just a few years ago."

The hot holiday titles from Nintendo will include Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (Nov. 17), Kirby(TM) Air Ride (Oct. 13), Mario Party(R) 5 (Nov. 11), 1080(TM) Avalanche (Dec. 1), and Pokémon Channel(TM) (Dec.1), as well as the highly anticipated Final Fantasy(R): Crystal Chronicles(TM) and Pokémon Colosseum(TM) in the first quarter of 2004. In addition, the Nintendo GameCube fall lineup is replete with top quality interactive thrills provided by independent publishers that appeal to every game taste, ranging from sports to action to role-playing titles.

Good god, if dropping the price to 99 and with games like Veautiful Joe and Mario Kart coming out soon does not move the system, nothing will.

Unless the system dies, then just like people said, it will fly off the shelves.

Yeah really...
i bough my system for $149 from TrUs and i got Zelda OOT with it free so i turn arround went to Walmart and traded it for SH3 for PS2 so i end up getting the system for only $99...
so for me ever since they were $149 with something free, it was just like buying it for $99....

Now if the BIG N want's to impress me, give me a new RE game.. =)

Zero was the start, but i'm hungry for more.....
