Shock Troopers is a GREAT game! I actually like it considerably better than the Metal Slug series, although, as stated before, their gameplay is nothing alike. In ST, your character has a lifebar, so one hit won't kill you, plus the team battle is really well done. you can switch off if a character's health is getting low, to protect them until you can get some health. Plus, the variety of weapons and bombs for all the characters both increases the replay value and makes team battle a lot of fun. Also, the fact that you have three different routes further increases the replay value. Its a pity that it was never released for the home system.
Unfortunately, ST2 isn't as good as its predecessor. The number of characters has been greatly decreased, and the team battle feature was removed entirely. Furthermore, it looks like they tried to use some pseudo 3D graphics instead of the more atristic/cartoony graphics we've all come to know and love and expect in most Neo games. The result is that, some effects look better, but the majority of the game looks pretty ugly. Its still a pretty fun game in spite of the flaws, but nowhere near its predecessor.
