I love the MS games and have a lot of fighters, so I was looking for some other good titles and I came across ST1/2. Is it worth buying? is it co-op like the MS? Which one should I get first? Thanks peeps,
AJ

I bought a SHocktroopers 2 MVS kit (new from Mdgamesales a few months ago) and figured I would have some fun with it, but srangely enough, I haven't played it since the last I completed it.

It's not a bad game, but for some reason, I find the slowdown and the short stages to be somewhat boring. Yes, there are some multiple paths to take and different variables for each character you use, but these enhancements don't really add much to the longetivity of the game. I'm sure I'm probably in the minority as far as my opinion is concerned, but who knows.

I don't think Shock Troopers is as good as the Metal Slug series, although i'm not sure if thats a fair comparison as gameplay is completely different. I bought the game with very high expectations but i was definitley let down. My expectations of this game may have been a bit to high though, as ultimately i do enjoy the game.

Some things about that game i enjoy:

The fact that all the characters are different (unlike in the Slugs) is very nice. The option between the team mode or "lonely wolf" mode is also great. All the different levels are nice and the ability to choose the path is a plus as i really enjoy certain levels. The motorcycle in Jungle level 2 is cool, and climbing in the mountain route is fun. I've only had the chance to play ST multiplayer once with my friend and it was a blast. Definitely a fun co-op experience. The game also has a pretty decent length.

Some things i dont like:

My only complaint with this game are the bosses as i wish every level would have had a unique boss, because fighting a tank or helicopter more then once is silly. And while the graphics are nice, the backgrounds just feel a little sparse or "bleh" (boring perhaps?) at certain points.

Overall i would give the game an 8 out of 10 because i feel its good, but not great. Still its a good game, that i like and if you are into shooters and stuff like this i'd say go for it and get it. Im definitely going to pick up Shock Troopers 2 as the idea of being to control the vehicles sounds fun.

You know what they are both worth buying and I enjoy both games very much. Get ST one first then get ST2 second. I love both games and they are co-op like the slugs. You get to drive vehicles in ST2 as well just like the slug games. I havent played much of ST but I do like it. I would like someday to get the JPN Shock Troopers 2 NGH cart. That would be nice! :D In my opinion their funs games and those are the type of games I like anyways. If you like that type too buy them up! :)

Generally the insaneClown and I agree, but I think Jason is wrong, but Shock Troppers 2 is a ratrher generic and poorly implemented game. For thed $350 the AES version fetches you could get Metal Slug 2, 3 4, and all are WAY better. This title is for collectors or overheasd shooting fans only.

Well he's going for MVS he said, so I even if he's a collector he could easily pick up both kits for a reasonable price. And they are both worth it. I picked up ST about 3 wks ago and have logged many hours on it. It's a great game. It's like a Neo Ikari Warriors. The sequel was not as good in my opinion which is probably why it's much cheaper. Still a great game and both are worth the price you would pay on MVS.

Shock Troopers is a GREAT game! I actually like it considerably better than the Metal Slug series, although, as stated before, their gameplay is nothing alike. In ST, your character has a lifebar, so one hit won't kill you, plus the team battle is really well done. you can switch off if a character's health is getting low, to protect them until you can get some health. Plus, the variety of weapons and bombs for all the characters both increases the replay value and makes team battle a lot of fun. Also, the fact that you have three different routes further increases the replay value. Its a pity that it was never released for the home system.

Unfortunately, ST2 isn't as good as its predecessor. The number of characters has been greatly decreased, and the team battle feature was removed entirely. Furthermore, it looks like they tried to use some pseudo 3D graphics instead of the more atristic/cartoony graphics we've all come to know and love and expect in most Neo games. The result is that, some effects look better, but the majority of the game looks pretty ugly. Its still a pretty fun game in spite of the flaws, but nowhere near its predecessor.

I like Shock Troopers better than Shock Troopers 2..

I bought Shock Troopers 2 first..and I didn't like it as much as I do Metal Slug..I was hoping for a Metal Slug fix/clone..

But playing it made my want to play Metal Slug again..I just couldn't get into it....it left me wanting more..

Then I got Shock Troopers..now this is a much, much better game then Shock Troopers 2.

Even though I still like the Metal Slug/s better then Shock Troopers games..anyway..they are great games..

I would say buy Shock Troopers first play it through then buy Shock Troopers 2..
They are well worth the money..

better late than never :D

Shock Troopers 1 = best game ever. EVER. buy it, BUY IT, BUY IT!!! Alright, so nobody's going to agree with me on that... but it goes without saying that it's my favorite Neo-Geo game ever.

Shock Troopers 2nd Squad is a bit underrated because it suffers from being a relatively underwhelming sequel to such a brilliant game. Taken on its own it's still pretty good, but if you had to get only one you have to get part 1. Of course I still love them both... I just love part 1 so much more.

So yeah, that's all there is to. Buy part 1 ASAP, and if you're still itching for more, get 2nd Squad too... just don't expect it to be "more of the same".

Shock Troopers 1 is fantastic, and probably gets more play time than any of my other Neo games.

Lots of fun, especially if you're playing for score :)

If you're going to get a shock troopers, you definetly can't go wrong, but as most say here, I would go for the first episode if I had to choose. Which doesn't mean that the second one is not worth buying! (well, maybe in HomeCart at those high prices...)

I don't think you can compare it with the Metal Slug series. Ok, so both games are shooters, but apart from one being side scrolling and the other vertical (and sometimes side), gameplay is very different. It plays more like ninja commando than metal slug perhaps.

Well, if you liked MERCS on CPS1, you'll sure LOVE the Shock Troopers series :)

Although a bit dated shocktroopers is one of my fav shoot em ups

it has plenty of different routes and some nice violence and fun to play ,however when i got the sequal i absolutely hated it,

The fighters had turned into comical big head small bodies plus some of the weapons were very childish for more like a kids game and it wasnt that much fun.

Shocktroopers 1 is the best of the two.

Shocktroopers 2 suffers from too much slowdown.

You can buy the entire shock trooper serie without any doubt, worth every penny!
I discovered this serie lately but I was impressed by the game's quality. I thought that the genre was completely covered but ST brought fresh ideas.

Metal slug can be compared to Shock Troopers only b/c they are both loosely military in comparison.

But they are totally different games!

Metal Slug is to Contra

as

Shock Troopers is to Commando

But to answer your question, ST is a must buy either way. I have not played ST2.

ST1 is not that good.

Didn't like it.. very blah.

ST2 is pretty good. The graphics are nice for a neo game and it's quite a challenge.

Slightly off-track....

I watched Porshapwr play ST2 at the DE get-together.. very very very impressed. He's MASTERED that game.

oh really? I tend to think that one hasn't truly "MASTERED" 2nd Squad until they can attain the "General of the Army" rank at the end of the game. ;)

Don't get me wrong, I've talked to Porshapwr about the game and he's a cool guy, but I'd be surprised if he'd reached that level of play without telling me. :p

(P.S. the requirements for General of the Army is finishing all stages with a score of at least 10 million. And since your score gets reset upon continue, it has to be one credit...)
