*Since I caught shit for my Noir post, this posting is **SPOILER FREE** for the most part, no main plot points are given
**PLUS I'm NOT talking about the movie, though it was decent none-the-less**
This is one GREAT Anime series. It's got everything you could be looking for: great story, great characters/character designs, great animation, great music and great voice acting (in Japanese at least, can't say I like the dub myself, but to each their own).
It also happens to be super depressing and not very happy over all. I find this kinda odd for CLAMP, since they've released things like Angelic Layer and Magic Knight Rayearth (which aren't all happy happy, but dammit, NONE of those series kick you in the balls like X will).
The first time I saw the animation, I was floored. I couldn't believe how GOOD it looked! It seemed close to theatrical quality and you can tell they spent a lot of time getting it just right. Justifiable time and expense for such an amazing story, IMO.
Aya Hisakawa does the voice of Hinoto (Dragon's of Heaven's Dream Seer). And she happens to be ONE of my favorite VAs. I've seen Inoue Kikuko (Belldandy) listed as being a voice on eps 5, but I haven't gone back to listen for her just yet. I'm waiting for the series to be out totally before rewatching it.
Before Now Loading mentions it, Kuwashima Houko does the voice of Yatouji Satsuki (happens to be his favorite VA
) (sorry Now Loading, just wanted to get one up on ya!
)
This is also an odd show because by the end of the series, not many people are needed to animate the main characters, if you catch my drift.
I like the big drama between Fuma and Kamui, the scene right after Kamui decides which side he's joining. That hits you in all the wrong spots.
My personal favorite characters are Karen (babe!), Arashi and Kanoe.
Beast is, well, what can be said for a giant computer with 666 painted on it?
Beast happens to be th only character I question, though he/it has it's own special part to play, which we get to see in disc 7.
There are 2 things I'm disappointed in with this show.
1) The amount of time it's taken for the entire series to be released on R1 DVD. Started September 24th, 2002 and as of tomorrow disc 7 will be released (got mine today. DVD Planet is still good for something at least)
2) The amount of discs this one is. 8 discs for 24 episodes (25 if you count episode 0 that's on disc 1). Seems a bit like over kill. Though I know why they did this (they need to make money on the show so they can afford to buy more shows. This happens to be one of Pioneers more expensive aquisitions, BTW), I still don't like it. I wish they would have put it all out at once, instead of torturing me with one release every 2 months.
Anyone who watches this and doesn't feel depressed to some degree is either dead or an uncaring bastard. I believe this was the Anime described as being able to make a hard ass truck driver cry.
Overall I feel this is a much more enjoyable experience than the compressed and cut up theatrical movie they did in... '99? Though the theatrical version was good, it has nothing on the TV series, IMO.
So does anyone else like this series? What don't you like? Favorite characters? Stories to share?
Keep it spoiler free, though if you've seen the movie, you know basically how it's going to end up (I haven't seen the last 4 episodes, but I know how it ends)...
