I know that there are many game related magazines out there. Currently, I have a free subscrption to EGM and the mag is pretty good, it has a lot of interesting things. I have a paid subscription to Game Informer because some hot chick at gamestop suckered me into getting a subscription. The mag is pretty good but I think since there owned by gamestop they could be biased in a way.

what is the best mag out there, overall?

Edge, I have a subscription, but it's probably not that good really. It loves teh romzz for one thing, but at least it doesn't think it has to give something 9/10 every week.

I've got a subscription to play and GMR (it was free). Both have a very strong sense of design, but overall I prefer play. Definitely the best game related magainze I've ever read.

PSM (it was more interesting in the earlier years, though)

I used to get the Offical Dreamcast mag, but when it went under they started sending me PSM. PSM is a pretty good mag. I loved the dreamcast mag though.

Does play have a website or something? Cause I have never seen that mag at my local Borders or Waldenbooks.

Edge and Games TM are the best ive seen at the moment........

The layout and design of Edge is far superior, but GameTM reminds me of CVG circa 1990, the glory years.

I have no idea if Game TM is anygood or not due to not being able to make head or tail of the layout.

I just don't understand why they'd hire old Smash Hits graphic designers.

Tips & Tricks is the only mag I like and actually read.
They actually have some respect for classic videogames.
The others are crap.

I read the first issue of Games TM, and i thought it was quite good. I've always been fond of Nintendo Power, its not the best but eh i like it. Play is probably my favorite game magazine at the moment, but i don't pick it up often enough.

LOL its so true, it is kinda funky...........unreadable at that, but the editorials etc have a much less pointy nosed feel than Edge's carrot up our asses reviewers.

Well, as far as current-standing mags are concerned, EGM for me wins by default, seeing as it's the only current mag I read, thanks to a free subscription to it, much like Ken.

But still, I look at today's EGM and know it's just not the same. The older EGMs were rad stuff man. GameFan was nice too.

But the best for me is easily Sega Saturn Magazine, which I'm currently enjoying one by one. These gold mine babies are truly magnificent pieces of art. Even the old EGMs and GameFans put together can not match the beauty that is SSM.... and that is high praise indeed!

I'm liking XBN quite a bit. They mark pretty well, I can't stand it when magazines mark too high, it becomes impossible to tell what's good and what isn't when the average score is something like 8/10. They also have interesting articles instead of a couple pages of reviews and filler. My personal favorite part, they recognize that the Xbox isn't just a game console, and have a couple pages (usually two) dedicated to cds and dvds. It's a pretty classy magazine.

How do you get this free EGM?

A long time ago Steve put up a free EGM thing link. Thats how I still get my EGM. And damm why does everyone like GameFAn that mag was the shittiest. No wonder it got canned...you know who should be canned? Fucking PSM I cant understand what the fuck happened there. Talk about killing the titanic.

EGM has nice formats with its magazine... But the editors act all high and mighty morons... Otherwise, great magazine...

Used to be Gamefan, but since they are no more, I just read XBM for my X-Box and PC Gamer for other games.

I only read Edge as i have a subscription. But Games TM isn't a bad mag by far and i have a few issues, they write great reviews.

Other UK mags i liked were DC-UK and N64 (earlier),they ruled back in the day.

GAMEFAN

Almost the same for me, minus the PC Gamer. Surprisingly, ever since Gamefan went under, the US gaming mag scene feels surprisingly empty. I really pulled for GameGo to make it...reading the remnants of what would have been issue2 made me realize that had ECM and Co. had funding, this would have been a great little alternative mag in the spirit of Gamefan that only showed signs of getting better.

Strangely enough, I do enjoy the OXM a lot...it has the humor and style that I loved in the Official DC Magazine...no surprise as some of the former staff migrated over to the OXM. I also like the monthly demo discs, but the mag itself is surprisingly top notch and stays focused on GAMES, not movies and anime.

I used to like Dave Halverson's Gamer's Republic, but as well all know, that went under and he started PLAY magazine which is okay, but has a bit too much anime and movie stuff in the back than I would like for a gaming mag. They do seem to be VERY forgiving of bad games in this mag, and that troubles me.

EGM, not an option...too mainstream.

Tips & Tricks is OK--some issues are better than others, although I do love the back pages the best with the collections, cool stuff and retro articles.

Game Informer - tough call...I find this mag to have writing and humor similar to PC Gamer for some reason. It's an entertaining read, but I don't care for the reviews.

I did get a sample issue of "Polygon(?)" mag from rimms_r today in the package he sent with my Neo game. Looks interesting as I have never seen this mag before. I'll check it out before reserving judgement.
