No Dragon Lord, Zoma, Geese, Big Boss. That top ten is bullshit.

Agreed. There are more holes in that list than there were in OJ's legal defense.
No Geese = Bullshit lie.

Well, if you think any Neo boss fight will make it over some of the mainstream stuff, then your sadly mistaken. I think it was some what decent. As much as I feel some are only their for obscure references to make them look like "hardcore" gamers. Of course, that statement applies to the fact that Dark Falz from Phantasy Star is listed and not a single Final Fantasy boss made the cut, that I love. I'm sure Sephiroth will get number one after the voting though.

Finally, someone here who's based off of reality. I love SNK bosses as much as the next guy, but did any of you really expect to see one in this list?

Hey, Dark Falz, Mike Tyson, Psycho Mantis.... these ARE great bosses, you have to admit.

The only one that *I* wish they had in there would be Zeromous.

Even without the SNK related bosses that list was still trash.

Come on! No Geese, no Bowser, no M. Bison/Vega, this list is a shame to video game bosses!

the fact that no one here in their right mind would agree with an opinion piece is obvious.

Might as well turn this around have each of us give our own top 10 fights.

10. Exodus, FFV (no matter what, I won't call him X-Death, because when I was playing, I had to translate shit myself, and that's what I came up with. Funny how in FFT Advance, I'm right, but in FFV for the PSX, I'm wrong. There was so much drama at the end. I remember not being able to understand shit, but I could tell, there was a lot of drama...)

09. Chaos, Final Fantasy. After all the countless hours I poured into a game for the first time in my life, you can bet your sweet ass Chaos would make the list.

08. Red Falcon, Contra. Just the idea of beating the game gives this boss recognition. Because the game was just so good for its time? Sure.

07. Nightmare Geese, Real Bout Special. By far the most dramatic version of Geese. Also very very powerful.

06. Marquis Elmdor, Final Fantasy Tactics. This fight is so memorable because here you have a guy decked out in genji gear. Two assasins that can instant K.O. you with techniques you can't learn under normal conditions. One of which you desperately want to have cast on your squire so he can learn it, while at the same time, trying your best to steal all the genji equipment off Elmdor, including his sword, Masamune. It's not a fight, it's a mugging. But even outnumbering your foes, you're at the disadvantage.

05. Yuga, Asura Zanmaden. How many bosses have a sex change in mid fight? Not only that, but turning from a man to a real bitch only made the fight harder.

04. Xiga, Radiant Silvergun. What can I say, I thought it was very original. And hard.

03. Mizuki, Samurai Spirits II. Great build up. Great intro cinema. Tough as balls for the first 100 fights until you understand her methods.

02. Kefka, Final Fantasy III. Great build up. And incredible background music score, and some cheap ass shit. For it's time, very original, but definitely tired now with Sephiroth, Krelian, and countless other Square bosses following Kefka's lead.

01. Kuroko, Samurai Spirits II (you must wonder if I like this game...). Yes, a simple mid-boss. BUT THE MOST DIFFICULT boss you will ever face. In almost 10 years, I have not beaten the cpu controlled kuroko. The fact I play on higher difficulty doesn't help.

they needed top 20 bosses really...

i have no idea what the criteria was for those...

oh, and sephiroth will never be in consideration.
He was not a significant battle , nor was FF7 a great game.
If you been around long enough, FF7 was nothing worth noting compared to past incarnations.

wow the list fucking sucked.

Here is my top five

Bowser-(Super Mario World)- After what seemed to be the most agrivating world and the longest level you were brought to Bowser. Atop his Hover bulb he would huck Giant bowling balls at you. Then trying to hit him to aim....a lot of fucking aim.

Geese Howard-(Fatal Fury)- What seemed to be a really fucking agrivating game only got worse. Now without the assistance of player two you had to kill Geese. Geese also seemed to have everything on his side. His moves hurt and he could keep taking the hits. Finally after pumping a pocket full of quarters did you finally knock Geese of his sky scraper, only to find out he survived!

Sigma-(MMX)- Though the last level was just a very short climb it led to one of the most annoying fights ever. First you had to take down Sigma's loyal Canine which could go under your gun fire. Then onto the cheap bastard himself. He was fast and his pattern never seemed to want to be in your favor. He was the biggest pain ever. Finally you get to ANOTHER boss fight. The only way to even hurt him was using charged shots or if you knew your Mega Man the rolling shield. This Sigma had what seemed a never ending arsenal.

Gill-(SF3 3rd strike)- though not the hardest fight it could prove to be quite the suprise. After outsmarting him and finally taking him down he did what seemed to be the impossible. He jumped to his feet and started the fight all over again only you were stuck with what you had. Then finally after a couple more coin drops you almost kill him and he does a special. Wings shoot from his back and take out your character no questions asked.....and there was no parry big enough to stop it.

Andross-(Star Fox)- If the game wasn't hard enough it throws this bastard at you. Again after what seemed to be a never ending onslaught of polygons and strange shapes you get to this freaked out head. He has it all too. He launches everything and the kitchen sink at you and all he has are two eyes to take down. Before you even get close to killing him your wings will probably be destroyed leaving you a worthless pee shooter and maybe a bomb.

there it is.....

That's what a top ten should look like, there's nothing on that list that I disagree with.

I have to admit that I wasn't surprised to NOT see any SNK bosses. Still, I think Mizuki DESERVES to be on that list. She can turn you into a PIG for cryin out loud!

Still it was nice to see Akuma from Karateka on the list. Brought back a lot of memories from computer class. We'd always run all the way back to the fron door then run straight into the princess' arms.

Plus that goldfish on EWJim was funny as heck. I remember when I saw it and wondered WTF??!! I thought it was a joke until I somebody told me that really was the ending.

For some odd reason can't really think of any other bosses that weren't mentioned already...then again, i'm sleepy... oh well.

Here's my list, read 'em and weep...
(in no particular order)

FFIV- Zeromus. Not just the battle with him, but the build-up beforehand...seeing everyone who sided with you in the game, praying for your victory...the amazing music that accompanies the fight....stuff of legend dammit.

Strider- Grand Master Meio is absolutely insane. When I heard 'ALL SONS OF OLD GODS...DIE!!!' I wanted to shit myself.

Samurai Shodown- A lot of you folks cited Mizuki, but I think the bitch just doesn't hold a candle to Amakusa. That tense drum that ripples through the first round...then the boulder exploding and the music going apeshit after that...still to this day my single favorite boss encounter in any fighting game.

Street Fighter II- The Shadowloo posse. Not a big deal anymore since they are everyday playable characters, but I remember my imagination being completely captured the first time I saw the unplayable Mike Tyson dude, followed by the clawed freak and the big Muy Thai guy, I was amazed. Then M. Bison came out and told us all we should 'Get Lose'. Mindblowing.

The Legend Of Zelda- Ganon. Your first taste is still the one you remember. Death Mountain took me forever...just hours and hours upon frustration in that fucking dungeon...to finally see that pig-headed bastard and kill him with the silver arrows was just breathtaking.

Final Fight- Belger. Shocking to see that bald-headed weirdo with a bowgun in a fookin' wheelchair. Still long to beat this goddamn game with one quarter.

Castlevania (ANY)- Dracula. It's always the same, but it still ends up being a memorable encounter after a long, long struggle.

Revenge Of Shinobi-Neo Zeed. Still haven't ever been able to get the good ending. He's such a tough bitch to try and kill before the fucking spikes come tumbling down and kill Naoko. Anyone with solid advice needs to come clean and give me the 411.

Klonoa The Door To Phantomile- Ghadius. Wicked ending fight, tough as nails and pulled a wicked bag of tricks on the PSX hadrware. One of the most underrated side-scrollers ever.

Radiant Silvergun- Xiga. Does the running man up and down your ass, then makes you dodge bullets like mad for 60 seconds. The haters of this game need to step the fuck back and recognize greatness when its upon them.

If you look at the walls on the left and right side of the screen their is a gap in the chains. lob a shuriken in it to stop the spikes moving for 10 seconds. Remember to constantly keep check of what the spikes are doing when fighting Zeed and you'll win with loads of time to spare.

and with that here is my fave boss

Mr X - Streets Of Rage II

The music alone is worth mentioning, cus it's ace. Mr X had the most badass sprite ever and just when you'd go to grab him he'd fucking buttwhip you with a tommy gun. His acomplace, Shiva, is still the coolese dude in a headband, design light years ahead of Ryu et al.

I remember this annoying boss.... Now I know the trick, but too bad I don't have the game...

Kudos, otherwise, for including Ganondorf and Mike Tyson's fights...

Great choices and reasoning. My thoughts:

FF4: What REALLY made the battle with Zeromus frightening was seeing him take a dual Meteo spell from Golbez and FuSoYa like it was nothing. I couldn't believe he survived it, let alone crushed them with it afterwards. But my favorite boss battle, even though it isn't playable, is Tellah vs. Golbez. Watching Tellah, scatterbrained old mage that he is, digging down deep to cast a perfect 9999 HP damage Meteo on an overconfident, unsuspecting Golbez STILL gives me chills, and is probably the most epic moment in any RPG I've played. Anyone who thought Aeris' death was tragic needs to see this scene.

Strider: The fact that you quoted "All sons of old gods, DIE!" was funny; I have the PSX version and it sounds like the Grand Master's spitting into the mic when he says "ssssons". My most unforgettable boss fight happened in this game: the first stage fight with the legion of people sitting in the background that jump together to form that weird snake-like sickle-and-hammer wielding monstrosity. I remembered it vaguely from about ten years ago playing it at the roller-skating rink, and then I came to the scene on the PlayStation and INSTANTLY knew it was coming after descending that hill towards the end of the level...boy did that give me the chills, anticipating what I was going to fight. THAT'S a gaming moment. Then it shows up again during the scene you mentioned...? Bizarre, but in a GREAT way.

Final Fight: The battle with the Andores is pretty cool (when they carry you to that wrestling ring), but I agree Belger stole the show. And the crazy old guy is SCREAMING during the fight! "Wah-hoo, waaahhh-hooooo!" Capcom really was on a roll during the late-80s, I guess!

And some others:

FFTactics: The one-on-one fight with Wiegraf. This battle was the hardest in the game, unless you changed Ramza's skill set to Squire so you could speed him up, chose auto potion as a reaction and equip gun to pick him off at a distance. Of course, the fight to come immediately after was quite memorable itself...

Luca Blight, Suikoden 2: I've said it before, and I'll say it again: this guy eats any other RPG boss for breakfast, with the exception of Zeromus and (enhanced) Kefka.

I haven't read the list yet, so if any of these are on there, my mistake.

Let me add some that I think need to be recognized:

-Super Mario World = the last battle with Bowser as he flies around on the scaling balloon ship.

-Gradius III (SNES) = the final battle with the alien head who makes those cool shrieking noises as you fight!

-Ghouls N Ghosts (Genesis/SG/various) = the climactic fight with Loki!

-Legendary Axe 1 (PCE/TG16) = Jagu is a boss that was hard to kill and pretty impressive in terms of sheer size!

- I'll think of more later.
