Most of us here in Las Vegas have been waiting for Sunday, 9/28/03 (Gameland's next lock-in event) for our next big get-together. Well, I've got some mildly bad news to report.
I phoned up Gameland yesterday (Friday, 9/19/03) at 2:55pm to see if the lock-in was still a go. I was told that there would be no lock-in for September, but that they were tentatively planning one for the Columbus Day weekend (Columbus Day is Monday, 10/13/03). They didn't specify what day they were shooting for that weekend, but I'm assuming it'll be Sunday, 10/12/03. I have a feeling that lock-ins during the school year may be fewer and farther between than during the summer, what with the earlier curfew hours -- I think Gameland may only hold them on Sundays that are immediately followed by a holiday Monday.
Anyway, it seems there won't be a lock-in at Gameland for another 3 weeks. Did we still want to try for another large-scale 8/31-style get-together in the meantime?

I am not wearing my conteacts or glasses so alot of misspellings , well Gameland next sunday is a go, but this sunday no way too busy for some odd reason. I am going today at 4pm til I run out of money and a wait time for a initial D game is gonna make me wait for awhile...so any sudden Neo people decide to go now I'll meet ya there...
blind,
M-A-D
PS. man,. I can't wait to read this with my contacts on.
aftermath: wow, I type somewhat good.

Like I said, I'm all for going tomorrow, but it won't be until roughly after 3pm. They -might- let me go home early due to possible overtime, but I'm not sure yet.
Is there any way I can contact you if I get let out before 3pm?

So does that mean we are still on for Neo-gaming and sushi on the 28th? I don't really care if there is a lock-in or not.

Well, the lack of a lock-in didn't stop us on 8/31, so I don't see why it should on 9/28 (since most of us have been planning to be available on that day, anyway). I just wanted to get the lock-in info out there, since it would at least affect our food plans. I don't see any reason not to continue with a plan similar to what we did on 8/31.
Those of you who know the Gameland staff better than I do, correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think that if Domino-chan needed to contact us there today, she could probably just telephone Gameland and ask them to page the NEO Pocket crew seated in the party area. I'm sure they'd at least be willing to pass along a message like "I'm getting out of work early -- please pick me up at 2pm instead of 3pm" -- wouldn't they?
BTW, Domino-chan, PM me regarding current pickup arrangements.
So, aside from Dinodoedoe, Domino-chan, and myself, who else is available today?

I'll talk to Decepticreep to see if he wants to come and play. He probably will since he's been playing Card Fighter Clash non-stop since the last get together.:loco: I hope Gameland will get SNK/Capcom: Chaos since the rest of the valley seems to already have it!:annoyed:

Cool. I'm not going to be able to get there at my usual 2:15-2:30 time -- Hoteiya Las Vegas received a shipment of items from our supplier in Japan (including the Transformers Theme Song Collection double-CD!:buttrock: ) and I'm just wrapping up cataloging the contents. Gonna grab a shower and then head over to pick Domino-chan up at work -- since I haven't heard anything to the contrary from her, I'm assuming she's working til 3pm. Hopefully, we should be seeing the rest of you at Gameland by 3:30-3:40. Later!

I checked my schedule for any kinds of shenanigans they may have pulled on me and so far things are looking great. I'll go ahead and bring a change of clothes with me on Sunday so I won't have to rush back home... unless you guys want to see me in my dorky uniform. :loco:
I won't bring my NGPC just yet.. I still have to work on a better deck. And be prepared for more of my Billy tirades!!

wtf is a lock in? do they lock everyone in there and force them to play video games? what if u want to pay some hot bitch for sex later that night but u cant cuz u r locked in a video game store? what are the benefits? seems like it would be better to just have a game night where peeps can come and go as they pleased.
Domino-chan
09-29-2003, 02:41 AM
A lock-in is when you pay a fee to get into the arcade (here it's $10) and all the games inside are on free play for the rest of the day. They stamp your hand and you can go for as long as your stamina lets you.
I'm hoping for a big 10/19 meetup... it's gonna be the Domchan's 26th birfday. XD
And I must say I have improved on my Terry since the last time I was there. POWA GEYSA!!

Bah, who needs video games and friends when you can do boring insurance work for your mom and watch Sunday afternoon TV? :p Oh well, at least I got $50 out of it.
As you can probably tell, I couldn't get a hold of my friend, so I couldn't make it once again. I should DEFINETLY be able to make the next lock-in because my best bud from LA will be in town.

Hey guys, I went to Gameland yesterday since I am a Initial D freak. I saw them take out our favorite game, "typing of the dead," and put in the stupid Neo Geo MVS with Matrimelee in it's place...poor poor typing of the dead...I will...ok this is too hard to type with a straight face, I AM GLAD THAT STUPID GAME IS GONE CAUSE ALL THE DAMN WORDS WERE IN ENGLISH JAPANESE WORDS! SCREW THAT GAME AND WELCOME BACK OUR NEO GEO MVS....ok only thing left is to rid of that stupid DDR machine then then WE WILL RULE THE WORLD...errm..or have a whole row NG MVSs.

I can think of at least one or two other games (nah, more than one or two, really) that I'd rather see go to make room for Matrimelee, but I can understand why Gameland chose to remove The Typing of the Dead -- it just didn't get played all that much. It seemed to get the most attention during the lock-ins, when it was set to free-play. I really enjoyed playing it, tho, since I'm a HotD fan and since I don't have a problem with the Japanese text (managed to boost my typing speed recently by fiddling with a Hokuto no Ken typing tutor/game), making it about the only game in the place on which I could consistently dominate.
Glad to see Matrimelee back, tho. I agree -- if they'd just get that damned dance game the fuck away from our MVS cabs (I don't mind the music or the players so much as I hate that fuckwit announcer's voice!), then all will be well.

Well, I just got off the phone with Gameland: there will be no lock-in this weekend. I was under the impression that the public schoolers got Columbus Day off (Monday, 10/13), making for a 3-day weekend (and preventing Sunday from being a school night). Wait a minute -- did Nevada give up Columbus Day several years ago in trade for MLK Jr Day? Maybe that's the problem. The management said that since Sunday would be a school night they wouldn't be able to do a lock-in this weekend -- they get too many complaints from parents about lock-ins on a school night (or "my kid's not getting his money's worth / wasting his money going to a lock-in when he can't stay for the whole thing"). Anyway, they said that they might put future lock-ins on hold until Summer vacation (I'm hoping we might get at least one during winter break). Damn American parents, anyway. What the fuck does your kid milking every last minute out of a lousy $10 cover charge have to do with me getting a marathon session of freeplay SVC?!:blow_top:
Anyway, since we've never let lock-in cancellations prevent us from throwing a big gaming/dinner get-together, I would assume that we're still on for Sunday.
So, who's going to be there?
--Chris
EDIT:
Figured out the source of my mix-up re: Columbus Day here in Nevada. I believe my memory is correct when I recall that Nevada opted many years ago to give up a Monday holiday on Columbus Day in order to observe a Monday holiday on MLK Jr Day (we had to trade a day for a day since there can only be so many federal Monday holidays in a year). However, the City of North Las Vegas (my employer) gives us a Monday holiday for both Columbus Day and MLK Jr Day. Since I've gotten used to having Columbus Day off the last several years, I think I'd begun to assume the public schoolers had it off, too. Apparently not. Thus, no 3-day weekend for the kids this week, and no lock-in for those of us who should've outgrown video games already.

I'll be picking Domino-chan up from work at 3pm today, so we'll see the rest of you over at Gameland around 3:30 or so. I'm going to try bringing some of the new NEO Pocket puzzle games I bought recently (Puyo Puyo, Puzzle Bobble, Magical Drop) -- can't recall if all of these have link capability, but if any of you have your own copies of these that you can bring, maybe we can try some head-to-head puzzling. I would think any bakery can "paint" on an image as long as you give them enough time to do it. Of course after doing many pics of Elmo and Barney they might look at you and go, "WTF?! Who's this guy?" when you show them a Billy Kane pic for the cake.
But that's just what I'm assuming.. I could be wrong.. :loco:

Richard Stott (founder/organizer of the Anime Vegas (http://www.animevegas.net/) anime club) is the director of anime programming for the Las Vegas Comic Con (http://www.lasvegascomiccon.com/index.shtml). In addition to volunteers from Anime Vegas, he's also brought myself and a few other Meijin Kenryoku (http://www.meijinkenryoku.org/) anime club members on board. Well, last Sunday it seemed only Domino-chan and I showed up -- M.A.D., did you make it over to Gameland and somehow miss us?
Domino-chan messaged me overnight to say that Fygee would finally be coming to one of our Sunday get-togethers today, as well as another friend of hers.
I'll be stuck volunteering at the Las Vegas Comic-Con until at least 5 or 6pm today, but I should be free after that. Fygee -- do you have a license and a set of wheels at this point? If so, is there any chance you might be able to give Domino-chan a ride over to Gameland after she finishes work at 3pm? I'm going to call her between 3:30 and 4pm to see if she still needs to be picked up, just in case another ride is unavailable. By that time, I should also have a better idea of how late they'll keep me at the 'con. I really would like to make it to tonight's get-together, especially since we'll have at least one new face there.

There's usually at least 2 or 3 of us at Gameland Arcade every Sunday (around 3pm), and I've got Mondays off -- if you're going to be in LV on 12/7 & 12/8 (Sun & Mon), you should meet up with us there. BTW, I salute your Eightman After avatar.:buttrock:

And to add insult to injury he's using a ratio 4 Chun-Li. For that he shall pay. :very_ang: Then he calls my Geese cheesy... he's never even seen me play. :oh_no:

Hey, all -- sorry I couldn't make it to Gameland yesterday. Who all got together?
I was just looking at the thread about the KOF'03 U.S. location test in SoCal on Saturday, 12/6 (http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=71614), and I was wondering how many of the Las Vegas NEO fan contingent might be interested in putting together a road-trip to attend the event. Also wondering how many of the local members are licensed to drive and 25+y.o. -- I usually rent a car or van for SoCal road-trips, and extra drivers under 25y.o. incur extra fees (it'd be nice to have at least one extra driver, so I wouldn't have to drive both to and from SoCal). Alot of the LV members don't have DOBs (dates of birth) in their profiles, and those that do are 21-24y.o. Domino-chan just turned 26, but doesn't drive, and while Honeychan would qualify, lately she's been fairly scarce 'round here.
So how 'bout it -- anyone else interested in / available for a road-trip to the KOF'03 loketest? and would we have additional over-25ers available as back-up drivers? I'd be providing 10 solid hours of NEO-Arranged-Sound-Trax-goodness -- y'know y'all can't resist that! I just realized that this incarnation of the LV get-togethers thread didn't have the LV members list like the old one did, so I figured I'd do a quick cut'n'paste:

Well, so far I've heard from Domino-chan regarding her inability to go to SoCal for the KOF'03 demo on Saturday (work schedule conflicts and so on), but what about the rest of the local NEO fans? Is there anyone else free on Saturday who'd like to do this? Let me know asap.
Regarding the proposed "next big get-together" on Sunday, 12/14, how many of us will be able to attend? I'm assuming we'll want to do dinner afterward -- do we want to hit Sushi on Rainbow again, or do we want to try something else (if only for the sake of our non-sushi-eaters, like Marco's Arms Dealer)? Do we want to try watch some NEO-related DVDs and LaserDiscs, too? I've got just about all of the Scitron / Pony Canyon strategy LDs from the early-to-mid-'90s, plus the NEO-GEO Gals Graffiti and NEO-GEO DJ Station Live '99 LDs. Also, raw Japanese editions of all the NEO-related anime (on either LD, R-2 DVD, or both). I've also got that stack of game strategy / game tournament R-2 DVDs that I mentioned back on page 3 of this thread -- I've watched a few of those already; quite enjoyable, IMO. So, what're everyone's thoughts re: 12/14's get-together?

Typcially, the larger get-togethers have concluded with a gorgefest at Sushi on Rainbow (all-you-can-eat everything -- and all-you-can-drink everything-except-imported-beer -- for about $23 each). M.A.D., Domino-chan, and myself split a Round Table pizza a couple Sundays ago, and prior to that we went to Macaroni Grill for Domino-chan's birthday (M.A.D.'s not a sushi fan, but he loves Italian). I think the majority of us are game for just about anything, tho' -- usually the dinner options get hashed out fairly amicably over NGPCs at Gameland.

We meet at Gameland Arcade (4530 Meadows Lane, LV, NV 89107 -- phone: 702-878-9300). Go to mapquest.com and plug in that address -- it'll give you a pretty decent map of the area (which, unfortunately, i can't directly insert into this post). As you'll see from that map, Meadows Lane (and the Meadows Mall) lies just south of the US-95 freeway, between the exits for Valley View Boulevard and Decatur Boulevard [this portion of US-95 is about 5 mins west of the "Glitter Gulch" / Fremont Street area]. When you get to this portion of US-95, either take the Valley View exit south, then turn west on Meadows Lane, or you can take the Decatur exit south, then turn east on Meadows Lane. You'll find Gameland Arcade on the north side of Meadows Lane. The east half of this block of Meadows Lane is occupied by the Meadows Mall property, while the west half is occupied by a large "strip mall" arrangement (dominated by a Toys'R'Us store). You want to go to the strip mall portion of this block, then go the the east end of the strip mall. Gameland Arcade is one of the easternmost suites in the strip mall, right next door to a Gamestop store. Gameland has large red metal letters across the suite's face, reading "ARCADE."
As you enter Gameland, 2 large vending machines and 4 NEO cabs will be on your immediate left, while 4 sets of tables and chairs (arranged along the front window) will be on your immediate right. Usually you can find us either playing the NEO cabs, or sitting at the tables playing NEO Pocket. You may also find a few of us on CVS2 or GGXX, located in the middle of the arcade. Here's a pic from our 8/31 gathering, so you'll have a few faces to look for:
http://www.neo-geo.com/reviews/memberpics/Gatherings/Other%20pics/sushigroup.jpg
From left to right: Decepticreep, Dinodoedoe, Dash no Chris, AnechoicJinx, and Domino-chan.
BTW, for those who reply to this thread with an "I'll be there!" post, please indicate what time you'll be arriving at Gameland (as well as your dinner preferences).
Domino-chan, am I picking you up at work at the usual 3pm, or will your schedule be different on 12/14?

By all means, bring it with you -- I believe most of us have one or both of those games, and there'll be plenty of link cables. I'll wager you'll leave 'Vegas with a new-found love for the NGPC. I'll bring a stack of other Pocket games for you to try out, too.

I'm up for 12/14 and I'm eager to meet the rest of the LV crew.
I'm bringing NGPC, most of my games, plus link cable (and batteries, don't forget the batteries). I wish to find a worthy challenger to my deck o' death in Card Fighters Clash. :buttrock:
Also, I heard something about fighting with "B" rarity decks. Does that mean using "B" rarity or less, I.E. "B" "C" & "D", or exclusively using just "B" rarity and no others?
As for food, I'm down with Asian or Italian as long as it isn't too expensive. :)

hehe, i'm not sure if i could get into the neo geo pocket color. i think the fighters on the system, although pretty good, are too limited. also, i'm not too big on the card games. the only games i think i can play on it are the metal slug games and crush roller.

"Pretty Good?" "Limited?" Oooh, them's fightin' words.;) While it's true that the number of colors per sprite and the number of buttons are significantly less than, say, KOF EX2 or SFZ3Upper for the GBA, I think the NGPC fighters do a marvelous job of adapting just about every technique and lever-command an MVS character has to the hand-held environment (plus the NGPC lever is just about the single greatest input device ever made). Usually there's a slight acclimatization curve going from, say, RBFF2 to FF:FC, but in the end I think the NGPC fighters provide some really solid gameplay. I own a GBA with a number of games, but they tend to sit on a shelf gathering dust while I play the living hell out of my NGPC. BTW, have you tried the Card Fighters games? It's just that I've never heard of any Pocket owner who didn't find them completely addicting (I never understood the Pokemon craze, but I got an inkling of it the day I started in on Card Fighters).
Via freeway or surface streets, the arcade is maybe 5-15 mins from any given point on the Strip. Which hotel (or part of town) will you be coming from? With that, I could give you more specific driving directions, and a better time estimate.

Shouldn't take you more than 15mins to get from the Excalibur to Gameland. I don't care for the directions that mapquest.com is giving to get you there from the Excalibur, so I'll give you my own version (just in case you want to try some online mapping sites, tho', the address for the Excalibur is 3850 Las Vegas Blvd South and the address for Gameland is 4530 Meadows Ln).
The Excalibur sits on the southwest corner of Las Vegas Blvd South and Tropicana Ave. Interstate-15 and Tropicana cross just west of this intersection. So, from LV Blvd & Trop, go west, moving into the right lanes, and getting onto northbound I-15. Take I-15 north (past the exits for Flamingo, Spring Mountain, Sahara, & Charleston) to what the locals refer to as "the spaghetti bowl" -- the intersection of I-15 & US-95. After you pass the Charleston exits on I-15, you'll want to be in the rightmost 2 lanes which will become a flyover ramp that'll put you onto westbound US-95. Proceed west on US-95 and take either the Valley View exit or the Decatur exit. Whichever of these you take, proceed south to Meadows Lane (see my earlier post for further details on Gameland's location on Meadows Lane).
Hopefully, I didn't complicate these directions too much. Feel free to let me know if I need to clarify something.

Agreed. Lately it's only been 2 or 3 of us on Sundays, in which case we spend more time playing cabs than Pockets. But you're right, we're able to meet there for a li'l Pocket action purely by the grace of the management, so we should all make a concerted effort to give more back to them by sacrificing some Pocket time for more token time (I really need to start practicing w/my DC KOF'01 so I can start playing KOF'02 at Gameland).
That reminds me -- we should resume discussion of Marco's Arms Dealer's idea of a Pocket night at Cheese Boy Comics. Speaking of the comic shop...

How would everyone feel about getting carryout from our various restaurants of preference, and then meeting up at Cheese Boy for dinner and NEO-related DVDs and LDs? As long as Marco's Arms Dealer is absolutely certain this is cool with his boss, I'd be up for this. This might alleviate some of the conflicting palate problems. What does everyone else think?

I'm supposed to be getting a phone call from the non-NEO segment of the "let's go see Bubba Ho-Tep" population this morning. I apologize for the delays -- I'll post (and PM) as soon as I've got a day/time nailed down.
EDIT: In the meantime, one of the clerks here at the Courthouse (a fellow Bruce Campbell fan) contacted the theater last night and she was told that they would have Bubba Ho-Tep thru the weekend. Fandango.com corroborates this, as they're selling tickets to Village Square 18's Bubba screenings thru Tuesday of next week.
EDIT 2: Finally got a decision from the non-NEO locals -- they're planning to see the Sunday (12/14) 2:40pm screening of Bubba Ho-Tep. The movie is about 90mins long, so it'll be done by 4:15. Couple of questions:
1.) How many of those who were interested in seeing Bubba could make this screening, and how many could not?
2.) How many of us were planning to arrive at Gameland for the get-together earlier than 4:15?
3.) @Nash: would you and your party be interested in catching this flick while you're in Las Vegas? if yes, would you like directions to the theater?

I was thinking that the 2:40 movie might conflict with the usual 3pm get-Domino-chan-from-work deal. If it's at all possible for you to end your shift at 2 instead of 3, that would work perfectly. If your supervisor won't give you an early out for the O.T. you did today, perhaps a swing-shift co-worker would be willing to come in an hour early in exchange for you staying an hour late some other day (if that sort of thing would be kosher with management)? Let me know how things go on this.

Hey, BMS -- good to hear from you again! well, we've got a number of strong voices in favor of sushi, one or two for something else, and alot of folks who have yet to chime in on the subject of dinner. we really need to decide what we're going to do after Gameland -- if we decide to do sushi, those of us (like Marco's Arms Dealer) who aren't into japanese food would probably need to eat before Gameland so that they're not starving while the rest are filling themselves with sushi.

Most of us usually arrive at Gameland around 3pm. if a few of us try to see Bubba Ho-Tep, we might be delayed until 4:30. either way, there ought to be at least a few of us there when you arrive.
if you change your mind about the movie, it's showing at 2:40pm at the Regal Village Square 18 theater. the address is 9400 West Sahara Avenue (at Fort Apache). if you plug in that address along w/the address for Excalibur or Gameland you can get an idea of where the theater is in relationship to your hotel and the arcade.

Wondering where you've been the last couple Sundays.:smirk:
Domino-chan, NeoTheranthrope, and I caught the 2:40 screening of Bubba Ho-Tep (good sized crowd, too), and made it to Gameland around 4:45. Decepticreep & Dinodoedoe were already there, as was our out-of-town visiting member, Nash. Unfortunately, he had to leave at 5, so we only managed to chat/game w/him for a few more mins. BakuretsuMutekiSid arrived around this time. We went for sushi around 6 and ended the evening at about 8pm.
Nash is in town until Wednesday, and said that he might have some free time this afternoon/evening. I'm supposed to give him a call around noon to see if he'll be able to meet up for some more NEO today. I'll post again after I get a chance to talk to him.
@M.A.D.: if some of us try getting together again today, will you be available?
--Chris
EDIT: Just talked to Nash -- he's doing the Hoover Dam tour today, but will be calling me when he gets back into town later this afternoon. If any of you are available for Gameland today, please post a reply here.
EDIT 2: Just talked to Nash again -- he's back at his hotel. I'm going to grab a quick shower, pick him up at the hotel, and head over to Gameland. I'm hoping we should be at the arcade by 4:30-5pm. If anyone else is available today, please try to meet up w/us there.

@Domino-chan and NeoTheranthrope:
Thanks for making it to Bubba Ho-Tep on Sunday -- I was really pleased with the number of folks attending such an obscure flick (sounded like the rest crowd was enjoying the film, too -- huzzah!).
@Nash:
Thanks for hooking up with all of us Sunday and Monday -- it's always great to meet other forum members!
@Decepticreep & Dinodoedoe:
Always great getting to hang with you two -- we'll have to get NeoTheranthrope seated a little closer to you guys next time, just in case the Transformers topic comes up again (figure the odds!).
@BakuretsuMuteki Sid:
Glad you were able to make it to another get-together! Let's try another big gathering in January -- I should be able to bring at least a few nifty things with me from my New Year's trip to Japan.
@Fygee:
Well, what happened to your promised (and long-awaited) appearance at Bubba Ho-Tep? I feel I should warn you that Domino-chan has taken out a subscription to "Soldier of Fortune" and has been muttering quietly to herself about "contracts" or something...
@Marco's Arms Dealer:
When'll we be seeing you at Gameland again?
Domino-chan mentioned that she probably won't be available this Sunday (12/21) due to family obligations. I'll be in Japan from 12/26 to 1/12, so I won't be at Gameland on 12/28, 1/4, or 1/11. This means if there's a gathering planned before I get back to town, Domino-chan will need one of the other locals to provide her transportation. Hear that, Fygee? Might be your chance to get back in her good graces (hint-hint).
Thanks to everybody once again for a great capper to the weekend. Looking forward to next time!

Believe me, I feel pretty bad about missing out yet again on a meetup. I was fuckin' stuck at home organizing bills for my mom's work, and was really pissed off that I missed the movie. To be honest, I've pretty much given up on going out anymore. I'm always stuck at home because of some dumb shit my parents throw on me.

Is there going to be any neo action on 12/28? I know Dash no Chris is in the land of the rising H doujinshi and Domino Chan is probably going to be busy with work, is there anyone else able to come to Gameland on sunday?
Oh, and btw: I have, in fact, confirmed the existance of a Metal Slug 5 machine in a dedicated cab at the arcade inside the Rio. They also hace a Ultracade machine on a bigscreen with all the various versions of Street Fighter II as well as the original Street Fighter for your oldskooling pleasure.

Hey I'd be all for going as usual, but recently my schedule changed from 7-2:30 to 7-4 on Sundays.
As I said before if you're willing to pick me up after 5pm I'll be one happy Domino. :)
I do want to pitch a relatively big get together on Sunday, February 1st. My friend Ruko Hanaji's gonna be in town from Boston and she's a huge KoF fan. She really wanted to hang out and meet all you guys.

I'll be pulling alot of strings to be present at the Feb. 1st gathering since I found out two days ago that it's a Hard Rock "Blackout Date". Meaning that no one can request that day off.
So I shall be talking with management to tell them my friend Heather is in town from Boston and that I -need- that day off. Otherwise it would ruin her vacation time here. I gotta be there to entertain my friends ya know. ;)
Next week I'll be working my usual 7-4 time, so I hopefully shall be there after 5pm with Chris.

Well that's awesome man, just don't play DDR with me and Chris looking at you...cause we'll crack jokes, about you playing it and just the game itself...
Game announcer:
"Does your momma know you play this?"
"YOUR GREAT! DO YOU HAVE A LIFE!?"
you know, I don't want to get into an off-topic argument about this, but DDR is a better game than you probably give it credit for. Seriously, I hate it when people just write off the game without giving it a chance. And honestly, how can any of you crack jokes about how DDR players "have no life"?
That being said, I don't really have a need to play it because there are plenty of those around here. I NEED to play IIDX as the closest arcade machine is 4 hours away from me.

I know it must be a better game than I give it credit for -- it must be, or it wouldn't be so popular. Rhythm games in general just aren't my cup of tea, primarily because I suck at them. To add insult to injury, the games are physically designed to give maximum public exposure to said suckiness -- everybody gets to witness my lack of coordination. If I go to a disco, I have a 3-beer minimum before I'll go anywhere near the dance floor -- I'm just too self-conscious to dance stone cold sober. When I do dance at a nightclub, I'm faking it the entire time, just making shit up, copying moves off other people that don't look like they'd be too strenuous for my out-of-shape ass, etc. -- but w/DDR-type games, there's no making shit up: you either do it exactly right, or you don't (in which case, the game announces your failure to everyone in the arcade). If someone can convince a Victoria's Secret catalog model to invite me to play DDR, then I'll give it a whirl, but that's really about the only way anybody's going to get me up on one of those things (I'll stick with fighters and shooters, thanks).

For the same reason any obsessive fanboy of Thing X cracks jokes about an obsessive fanboy of Thing Y: if FBX is busy making "get a life" comments about FBY, it prevents FBX from seeing his own need for one. We have a board full of folks who buy games for hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of dollars apiece, yet someone who enjoys making and wearing a costume based on a comic/anime/game/movie character at a comic/anime/game/movie convention is an object of ridicule? It's in the nature of most fanboys to mock the fans of things they aren't into, if only to offset the amount of mockery their own fanishness subjects them to.
What M.A.D. is referring to was an impromptu "make up new things for the DDR announcer to say" session that we got into at Gameland last night. I'm pretty sure I started this, as I find the DDR announcer to be incredibly annoying (almost as bad as the CVS/SFZero announcer) -- naturally, the DDR machine is set to a pretty good volume level, and it just happens to be close to the MVS cabs. I started mixing and matching CVS/SFZero announcer phrases with those from DDR, and it just sort of snowballed from there.

Speaking of which, do any of the other locals remember which Beatmania game(s) we have at Gameland? I know a serious chunk of the machines there are rhythm games of one stripe or another, but even if my memory weren't only 30 seconds long, I still wouldn't know a Beatmania from a DDR from my own arsehole. DDR's the dancing thing and Beatmania's the DJing thing, right? I'm pretty sure they've got a game with a drum thingy on the front... Fuck.
Anyway, glad to have the chance to meet more folks from out of town. Speaking as someone without much of a life, when exactly is Super Bowl Weekend? (sorry, folks, but Notre Dame never plays in the Super Bowl, so my family could as much as give two fucks:p ).

Haha, fair enough then. It's just I thought I would be too embarassed to want to play it, especially since I'm a goofy white guy that can't dance for real... but once I learned how to play I began enjoying it immensely. Especially since it's not real dancing. Oh well, can't be everyone's cup of tea...

I see. I started ignoring the announcers a long time ago so they don't bother me, but I can imagine how annoying it could be for someone who doesn't play the game... although with enough exposure you'd probably get used to it to. :) I wonder which announcer it was, 4th Plus has a different announcer than Extreme. (if Gameland still has the 4th Plus, that is)

Correct, Beatmania is the "DJ Simulation Game".
From what I have read, Gameland has...
Beatmania IIDX 8th Style
Beatmania III Append 6th Mix (has 5 keys, as opposed to IIDX which has 7)
Dance Maniax 2nd Mix (has sensors sticking out from the machine that you move your hands over/under)
Percussion Freaks 7th Mix (also known as Drummania)
Mambo a Go Go (the other drum game?)
and of course the two DDR's. That's just what I've read though, it might not be up-to-date information.
Anyway, glad to have the chance to meet more folks from out of town. Speaking as someone without much of a life, when exactly is Super Bowl Weekend? (sorry, folks, but Notre Dame never plays in the Super Bowl, so my family could as much as give two fucks:p ).

Shouldn't be a problem. If BBH ended up needing a lift from The Strip, I was thinking of picking him up on the way to get you (like I did when Nash was in town). Let me know where and exactly when you and Heather'll need to be picked up and we'll get it all worked out.

Anyway, I'm available for the feb 1st get-together. My SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters Clash deck hungers for victory and I hunger for katsudon. Welcome to the boards! Always good to see another local! As far as SSV in 'Vegas... hrm, I haven't seen it here yet. As you may have seen further up this page, NeoTheranthrope spotted Metal Slug 5 in the Rio's arcade at the end of December, but that's the last I'd heard of any new NEO games in our little burgh.

list of the major arcades in town (incomplete)
Off the strip:
Orleans - no
Game land - no
Mary K's - Probably not, since it's rumored to have become a cyber cafe.
On the strip:
Luxor - no
Game Works (wretched hive of scum and tourists) - probably not, they got rid of most of their fighting games to make room for more dancing/shooting/driving/fishing/horseracing/jetskiing/ect machines plus the SS series generally isn't mainstream enough for them.
New York New York - don't know (they won't let my "suspected terrorist" ass into the building)

One of these days, I want to make a comprehensive listing of all the casino/noncasino arcades in town. A listing of where the arcades are at, what games they have, and a general rating of the quality of the individual machines.
It wouldn't need to be updated too infrequently as seeing how arcades around here tend not change their machines too often.

It's hard to find, unless you're an oldschool Vegas resident. I don't have the address but I can tell you where the general location is. It's on on the south side of E Sahara, inbetween Paridise rd and Maryland pkwy in a ancient shopping center called Comercial Center.
Comercial Center is a ring of shops that surround aparking lot, which in turn, surrounds a "island" of more shops. Mary K's is in the "island" of shops in the middle (on the southwest corner), look for the riced out cars parked outside (example: a "racing" geo-metro that has $10,000 worth of body work, suspension work, drop kit, custom rims, custom frontend, custom backend, wing, "type R" sticker, ect ect ect. But, still has the stock 2 cylinder geo-metro engine that can't even get up to 45mph on the highway) and the skinny, underage, spiikey haired, DDR playing, asian clone kids smoking outside the front door.
(Those asian DDR-players look like they could be clones or something, Same hair, same clothes, same cars, same attitude. I swear, there must be some factory in Hong Kong or Malaysia that stamps those kids out on an asembly line alongside bootleg SongMay CDs and plastic Godzilla knockoffs...)
Really you're hard pressed to find a a Neo anywhere around here. I've gotta build a Supergun.

okay Chris, it looks like I'll definitely need a ride on that Sunday. We'll iron out the details in PM.
and yeah, it's a pity that it's nearly impossible to find Neo-Geo machines there now. Back in... '95 I think it was, my family went to Vegas. I was too young to gamble at the time but I could still spend plenty of time at all the arcades, haha. I was amazed at the Luxor and Circus Circus, because they had TONS of 6-slot machines at the time... and rows of the mini "kid-size" 2-slots, which I had never seen before... it was an awesome sight. You can imagine how disappointed I was when I learned in a future visit that nearly all of them were gone. :( The MGM Grand had a good number of 2-slot machines too, first place I had ever seen Double Dragon. It's always disappointing to see traditional normal-sized cabinets disappear in favor of oversized racing games and whatnot. Hell, I remember playing some obscure beat-em-up at the Luxor called "Zero Team USA" that I had never heard of and have never seen again in my life since then.
so anyways. even though those arcades are very disappointing compared to their former glory, I'll still be scoping out most of the places on the Strip to see if there's anything worthwhile. I always seem to spend more time playing games than gambling. :D

Yeah, a year or two ago Mike (Mary K's owner), cleared out about 40-60% of the arcade cabs and installed networked PCs and monitors in their place (to run multiplayer first-person shooters, etc.). The 6 or so MVS cabs (mostly 6-slotters, IIRC) that used to be at the front of Mary K's were cut down to only 2 or 3 and moved to the back corner of the establishment. Fuckin' sad.

I'd wanted to do this back when I still had my website up. I was thinking about finding one reliable and/or interested employee at each arcade / game center who would be willing to email me updates whenever a new game came in or an old game went out. I wanted to try for detailed info that would include how much each game cost for 1 credit and the size of the screen it was connected to. I'm hoping to bring my website back from the dead in March, so maybe this is something I could try to do...

Side-scrolling beat-em-up by Seibu/Fabtek. Found a little info on it here:

The sprites were pretty small, it was an okay game but nowhere near a Capcom-quality beat-em-up. Only other thing I remember about it is that the token female character had a nice ass. ;)

Hmmmm... they do have at least one four-slot MVS machine in the Luxor's arcade. It has Metal Slug 2, a baseball game, an obscure oldschool 2d fighter who's title eludes me (sci-fi/futuristic theme, made in 93~94 or so) and another game that I can't remember. "Zero Team USA" could be that fourth game, but I'm not sure.

No that's the thing, the game isn't there any more. I played it back in '95 and then the next time I was in Vegas the game was gone. So many of those "little" games have been moved out.
I also remember when the Luxor had 4 Super Street Fighter II cabinets linked together for that "Tournament Battle" feature. That was kinda neat, although I wish it had been more than one round per match.

What time does your shift end on Sunday? BBH PM'd me regarding a time for me to pick him up at his hotel, and I suggested 2 to 2:30. I figured this would give me enough time to get him and NeoTheranthrope (who I'll be picking up on my way into town) over to Gameland, just in case I needed to pick you and Heather up at 4 (and would give me at least an hour or two at Gameland if you weren't going to be freed up til later).
By the way, can everyone who's going to be at Gameland on Sunday (02/01/2004) post a quick message here indicating what time they think they'll be arriving, and what their dinner preferences might be?

Well, if M.A.D. is bowing out on dinner, that increases the likelihood of no votes against Sushi on Rainbow... which would be good news for Dinodoedoe and Decepticreep. Domino-chan, how does Heather feel about sushi? BBH, are you a sushi-eater?

Sorry -- by "the front of the hotel," I meant right outside the front doors, at the valet parking / taxicab drivethru area. This would probably be the easiest place for me to find you.

I am TOTALLY sorry about the problem with the drive over to Sushi on Rainbow. As you know, I've got the memory span of a goldfish (30 seconds according to scientists, tho' I have yet to read HOW exactly they tested the goldfish's memory span), so as soon as I turned left onto Decatur I completely forgot to keep an eye out for you in my rearview mirror. It wasn't until a few minutes after we got to the restaurant that I realized (a) you'd been following us, and (b) you'd never been to the restaurant before and we hadn't told you the cross-streets (it's the northeast corner of Rainbow & Spring Mountain, btw). I actually muttered something to NeoTheranthrope about how I really should get a cellular phone for situations like this (I'd just have to remember to bring the thing with me when I went out). My apologies again, man!:(
Big thanks to everyone who was able to attend (BBH, Decepticreep, Dinodoedoe, Domino-chan (and her friend, Heather), Marco's Arms Dealer, and NeoTheranthrope). BBH, it was great to have the chance to meet you -- I may still shake my head at the DDR machines, but I've got a new-found respect for Beatmania. And anyone who cares to question your ability with Shock Troopers 2nd Squad can take it up with your eyewitnesses in Las Vegas. Hopefully, I'll have a little spare time in the next few days to upload my digital camera's files to my computer so I can post the shots of your high-scores here. Many thanks for being so accommodating about the dinner arrangements -- I regret that we weren't able to find something else on the Sushi on Rainbow menu for you. Were you able to catch a bite once you were back at the hotel? Thanks again for making time on your vacation to hook up with all of us. Domino-chan, please extend the same thanks to Heather for us.
Only dark spot on the evening for me was arriving home to notice that my cars front grill was pushed in (and the right side of my hood was no longer flush with the top of the right fender). The front bumper was fine tho' -- apparently, some asshole in an SUV or a jacked-up truck with a trailer hitch backed into my car while we were at Gameland. :very_ang: So now I get to go for an estimate on the repairs for this thing. As long as the hood will open and close properly, I may not have to get it done right away -- I'm pretty tapped after my Japan trip, but I'd just as soon pay for it myself rather than file an insurance claim. I've been getting a refund from my insurance company every year for not having filed any claims so far -- if I file a claim now, I'd have to be claim-free for 3 years before they'd start giving me the refunds again. Crap. That'll teach me to park anything less than 100 yards away from the front of a strip-mall. :blow_top:

That's good to hear at least. :) I'm still pissed that the IIDX 8th Style machine was completely unplayable, but at least I could get some old 5-Key action in. Believe it or not though, the songs on 5-Key are nowhere near as crazy as some of the stuff on IIDX... grab anything from here and you'll see what I mean

Haha that was great, why didn't anyone tell me they had 2nd Squad in one of the 4-slots? Made for a nice surprise, anyway. :) I'm really out of practice though, back when I was at my "peak" I averaged 13 million points every game, and now I was just barely scraping by 10... although I didn't do this point leeching I usually do on the last level, but you have to take a certain route to make it easier to use as much time as possible building up points... (the elevators you select on each section of the last stage determines which part you play next)... so yeah, I could've done better. But the one-credit finishes were the most important part, right? ;) I got a kick out of everyone freaking out as I kept jumping over all the reflecting lasers on the last boss.
Many thanks for being so accommodating about the dinner arrangements -- I regret that we weren't able to find something else on the Sushi on Rainbow menu for you. Were you able to catch a bite once you were back at the hotel? Thanks again for making time on your vacation to hook up with all of us.
It's alright. Like I said, I tend to be too finicky and am not a very "social" eater... just the way I am I suppose. But yeah it was definitely cool meeting everyone anyway! And Gameland is a nice little arcade. If it had a perfect IIDX screen, a Shock Troopers 1 in one of the four-slots, and a Strikers 1945 III cabinet, it would be the greatest arcade ever. hehe

Yeah, tell me about it. The hood is stuck shut by the way (at least it won't be flying open while I'm driving:oh_no: ). Didn't go out Monday, so today was my first day getting a good look at things -- I can actually see a slight crimpline running right up the middle of the hood. I went by the Chevy dealership's body shop after work today to get an estimate -- about $1260. The grill and hood will both have to be replaced, but about $700 of the estimate is painting the hood and blending the paint on the fenders where they meet the hood. At that rate, I'm considering just having them do the hood/grill replacement, then going elsewhere to get a new paintjob for the whole car. My insurance deductible is about $200, so if I just claimed the hood/grill replacement the insurance would only be paying for about $400 -- I figure I might as well pay for that myself, and not raise my insurance rate (and lose out on my yearly refund).
Sigh. This is really not what I needed right about now...

Ditto to what NT said. There's nearly always a couple of us at Gameland every Sunday from 3-4pm to 7-8pm. We'll usually have a large gathering there once every 5-8 weeks. None of us have recently suggested a possible date for the next big meet-up -- if you're planning a trip to LV, let us know the dates you're considering and maybe we can get the next big get-together rolling.

Yeah, just about everybody's names were changed in the transition from Kagaku Ninjaitai Gatchaman [Science Ninja Team Gatchaman] to Battle of the Planets / G-Force: Ken the Eagle became Mark, Joe the Condor became Jason, Jun the Swan became Princess, Ryu the Owl became Tiny, and Jinpei the Swallow became Keyop.

Thanks, man. It was good to meet all you all too. Even though I didn't really get to talk to anybody but Chris no Dash. Anyway, I just got Samurai Shodown 2 from Scoob105. How fitting it is that this is my first MVS game and it was my first AES game back in the day when I had one. Right now, I have a splitting headache from soldering, spray painting, and dremeling to put together my "Neo MVS supergun console thingie." It's the good kind of splitting headache, though.

As I mentioned previously, an old friend's mom was scheduled for double-bypass surgery today. I just found out a few hours ago that her mom passed away early Friday morning. I don't know if my friend's going to want to see anybody -- she may want to just be alone for awhile -- but I'd like to be available if she calls. If somebody's going to be home all day here, I could just take one of the celphones with me and the family here at home could direct her call to the cel.
Anyway, NeoTheranthrope is interested in going, and now I'm just waiting to hear from Domino-chan re: whether or not she & her friends'll need a lift. Keep me posted, D.

Well, that's what they get for buying from coinop-express, isn't it.... The freezing'll suck every other Sunday of the year, but if they're doing a lock-in this weekend, the free-play'll take a bit of the sting out of it. I'm assuming that they put KOF'03 in the 4-slotter with Matrimelee, Shock Troopers 2nd, and... Puzzle Bobble, was it?

i dont understand why you guys are so exited about gameland finally getting 2k3. i paid 250 dollars 2 months ago so you guys could play it for free last weekend and nobody really did, other than domino-chan. seems like you guys had more fun watching the gamus mook dvd of 2k3 rather than playing the actual game. i dont get it. hope you guys have more fun spending money on a glitchy 2k3 at gameland.
Dash no Chris
04-03-2004, 09:04 PM
Personally, I'm not so much excited about Gameland finally getting 2k3 (especially since it's glitching), as I am excited about Gameland finally having another lock-in -- because it affords me the opportunity to try all the other (non-fighter) games they have, that I normally wouldn't spend my money on.
As far as 2k3 goes, I was hesitant to jump in and try it out since (1) I haven't really put in much time with any KOF since '99 and (2) i haven't been reading up on the new 2k3 engine/system and change freaks me out. i'm more comfortable with one-on-one fighters than i am with tag-team fighters (which is why you'll see me playing SFZero3 more often than MVC2), so the new 2k3 system makes me nervous. stupid, i know, especially since it's free to play when i hang with you guys, but there it is. i did have a blast playing SamSho V, tho' -- a one-on-one fighter that's got a little more in common with its predecessors' systems than 2k3 has. You'll notice, tho', that i wasn't trying out the "meditation"/"bullet-time" system -- it's new and scary.
my business partner, Brad, almost never glances at the manual for any new game he gets -- he just starts the game and plunges in. i'll often read the manual cover-to-cover -- or read thru a couple of FAQs -- before i'll even go beyond the opening title sequence. i seem to have a need to know what i'm doing before i attempt something new -- which is why i can't set foot on a dance floor without at least 3 or 4 drinks in me (i don't know how to dance (at all), and i need a bit of self-consciousness lubricant (alcohol) to get me out there). perhaps i should bring some Asahi Super Dry with me next time we get together?:glee:
