Mainstreamers PC (or how to anger Kernow)

Ok now is NOT the time to upgrade your PC (the best of the best can only do 60FPS in Half Life 2, yeah I'm going to wait), so I had to stretch my baby out just a little bit more.

I also take this thing to a weekly LAN party, so my old huge Antec server case was NOT the thing to do as the total weight was rediculous.

Anywho I got a light case (Antec LanBoy) and since it had a window in it I figured I'd rice the old girl out.

Since my old case had 4 80mm fans and this thing only had two, I upgraded em to 49CFM Panaflow fans to keep the air moving, which I needed to do since to get a wee bit more performance I'm overclocking my video card.

I have a 64Mb GeForce4 Ti 4200 overclocked from 250Mhz/513Mhz to 300Mhz/600Mhz. Not too crazy considering the card has been known to push a lot more, but it boosed my FPS in UT2k3 by a very noticeable amount. With those frequencies it's a little bit ahead of a 4400 but not quite up to 4600 levels. I'm still quite happy with it though, but yeah only having an 1800+ and PC2100 is starting to feel slow now that I've used some of the newer P4 stuff.

Ahhh well, hopefully when Doom 3 comes out we'll have the CPU's and GFX cards to handle them.

I like those micro ATX cases, thinking about getting one of them for MAME on the TV and other uses. Pretty sweet and the prices on them are unbelievable!

its great... it has a little slide in the front and i have a dvd drive/burner and an e card reader which is very useful for my digital camera... it has a amd 3200+ gf fx 5600... 180 gigs and 1 gig of ddram.. perfect for half life 2 ... well atleast i hope so.

Just get nVidia's latest drivers when they come out and you'll be fine for HL2 (supposedly).

Yeah I thought about getting them but I figured I like having somewhat of a tower and this thing is SO friggin light it also allows me to upgrade at will.

And with the new drives coming out soon I'm going to wanna, I want a 10k RPM SATA RAID....

yes supposedly there are new drivers coming out sooncuz the one i have now flickers alot.

While we are on the topic of PC gaming, has any gotten the "offical" CS 1.6 release yet. Came out yesterday or the day before I think. Haven't gotten around to dling it yet.

Dude ur gonna freak when you see this (this was made septemeber 12th by TomsHardware) The Nvidia FX series is not going good at all on the Half Life 2 benchmarks because FX series can only run half Precision of the Pixel Shading 2.0 which is standard for Direct X 9. Anywho check it. Check out this link and look at the benchmarks, your gonna be shocked. BTW when its running in Direct X 8 everything is reduced considerably and HP means half precision.

i have direct x9 and my card is the ultra it doesnt seem like its doing too badly and i wouldnt trust just one site on their statistics.. ill wait till i see it with my own eyes.

Dude don't worry with the way DX9 is drivers play a HUGE roll in performance. Just wait for the .50 drivers from nVidia and I'm sure your card will perform nicely with HL2.

And yeah they'll be out before the game.

And about the 50 dets from Valve (creators of Half Life 2)

NVIDIA does have a new driver release on the horizon, the Detonator 50 series of drivers, however Valve instructed us not to use these drivers as they do not render fog in Half-Life 2. In fact, Valve was quite insistent that we only used publicly available drivers on publicly available hardware, which is a reason you won't see Half-Life 2 benchmarks in our upcoming Athlon 64 review.

I'd like to see how things run with that driver. Call it a cheat or whatever, if they keep the same visual quality as ATi and get the FPS up to par, then how is it cheating?

That and Valve is in bed with ATi to some degree, and while they deny any false play, I think that's reason enough to wait for NVidia's stuff to come out before passing judgement.

I never understood that whole fascination with putting neon lites inside your PC case. I have 2 desktops and they sit under my desk, out of sight . I'm not knocking those who put em in, I just can't grasp the concept.

It's a nice case JHendrix but it looks like a really tall toaster from the front (or a bread maker) . Then again I'm one to talk, one of my desktops has a black outer shell and all of the drives are that default grey/ivory color. It's awkward looking to say the least .

lol, yeah the whole neon light thing is wierd. This PC will get it's main use like once a week at a LAN party where we play whatever. So having it look cool is well cool.

I figured since this case (which I got for being light and looking nice) had a window, so I figured I'm putting rounded cables in there anyway (to improve airflow) I might as well put the light in there to boot. I mean $12 and it looks kick ass, figured it was worth it.

Nice picks mike, I was contemplating getting a new system last week and I priced out almost exactly the same stuff you've got there with a few minor tweaks.

I have

a P4 2.6 ghz

1 gb ddr ram(corsair)

and a geforce 4 ti 4200 128 mb ddr

(but it ll be replaced with a radeon 9800 pro

when hl2 ll be out)

i hope to be able to play doom 3 and hl 2 at 60 fps

but i don't know

I aint upgrading it for a single game either, meh fuck that, it runs leenux and XP like a dream, and I haven't upgraded anything but the vidcard and RAM in the last .. hmm 4 years?

You and your LAN party guys should start a sort of gangsta LAN party scene where you have your boxes all lit up Neon all over and have hydrolic jacks and wheels and shit on them. And you also have to get trashy chicks to pose with them in bikinis.
