the KOF series? I was wondering because I can play SF II very well. I just can't seem to get any decent combos out for any of the KOF series games.

How long did it take for you to become comfortable with the characters? Are there any characters you prefer when training? I play KOF 98 & KOF 99 every nite after class and still no luck.

I'm not amazing at KOF by any stretch of the imagination but I can hold my own. My play is based off of smaller 2-5 hit combos, hit fast and get out, that kind of thing. Took me a good 3 years to be able to really do anything worthwild in any given KOF.

While I don't consider myself "good" or an "expert" at KOF, I am skilled enough that I can hold my own against most of the scrubs and moderately good players at my arcade.

Basically, to learn the game and the combo system, I started out using the old standbys like Terry, Kyo, Andy, Mai, and so forth. They have plenty of great moves and are relatively straightforward in their control and so on. Get to know their standard attacks, the time it takes for moves to come out, their specials and supers, and how to block effectively. Once you have a decent comfort level in the above key points, start to experiment with basic combos and two in ones.

The other thing to remember is that the KOF series in general requires precise joystick movement. I found that the SF series generally lets you cheat a bit when it comes to the qc moves and so forth. With KOF, you need to be more precise...listen for the "clicks" in the joystick's microswitches when pulling off moves and combos...that's the best way to tell if you're pulling off the moves completely and accurately. It takes time, especially for those who have been raised on Street FIghter II games.

The only KOF game I would say I'm "above average" at is KOF 2K1. For some reason that engine just really suits my style of play.

Use good movement to exploit your foes weaker defensive angles & attack those spots.

Unlike anyother fighting game, kof requires art in all areas, kof has high skill levels even in walking, running, run then attack, jumps, hops, basic moves, back dashing, all these are some things you can do in most fighters, but kof has a degree of skill even for doing these.

Some moves in kof seem slow, they are slow if your enemy reads your style well.

Every character has different tap combos & combos. If you think you can do weak combos for every character, then your wrong, they require skill & the human brain can't hold all the different set timing required for each character, thats why people often pick the same team & characters.

The point is, kof requires lots of dedication before you see results, to be honest, lets say sf does not need that much mind space, thats why you can learn every character to a decent level no sweat, timing on the moves are similure from character to character.

Once you learn stuff in the kof series, it starts to get hectic for our minds to handle, so we play certain kof games to keep or gain new skills from, no one can play 2 or more different kof games & carry there maximum skill with all characters over to the next game as it would have changed so much that your brain can only hold so much percific data.

It took me one solid year.

I was like you, and played way too much SF. The problem is that thier combo system mostly deals with cancellation moves. Also, thier combo system, as a whole, is slow compared to KOF.

So, once I stopped trying to use Hard Punches, where it called for 'punch' in the move FAQ. (Yes, you can usually do the moves with a HP, but it's harder for me), and once I learned that string combos must be done *FAST*, I started to get the hang of it.

My big problem was that someone taught me to play SF. I learned at college, with my friends there to show me what I was doing wrong. I got into KOF all alone, and had never even seen anyone play it well. I didn't even know what the combo would look like if I was doing it right.

Just keep playing, keep your faq close, and remember that KOF is much, much, faster than what you're used to.

Well some of us...read me...just don't have the skills to be good at it. No matter how long I play. It doesn't help that I'm probably older than most here. My hand-eye coordination never was the greatest to begin with and as age becomes more of a factor, it's not getting any better.

But that doesn't mean it's not fun, just a little :emb:

Btw...m_bishop...that's one cool home arcade ya got there :buttrock:

Once I learned the Engine I picked it up really fast. I play by punishing people's bad moves with specials and heavy hits. I can't combo for shit. Either that or I run in and go nuts. I'm a pressure nut. If you get in the corner with me say good night!

Wow..all of this is really good to hear. I play mainly Ryo, Terry, and Joe. I like Joe because he is rather quick. I will just keep playing and try new attacks. Once I get comfortable, then I will see about combos.

Thanks everyone,

I usually own the regulars at the arcade and my friends who just play nexgen stuff. But the few times I actually played someone who owned a neo and played kof a lot I got my ass handed to me. :/

I really enjoy 2D fighting games, but I'm now what I would call 'good' at any of them.

I mean, compared to a lot of people, anyway. It's probably because I only get to play against the CPU 99.9% of the time.

It took me quite a while to become a player I am today (;) ).

I practice at least 2 hours a day, back in the KoF 99 days.

I only have KOf 94 and I don't play it often so I won't be good until a long time.

blah i used to be good(not great) at kof games but now...

....blah i play off and on for the most part. the toughest part about kof was the oddball mothions you needed to do to perform some supers. if i take my time i can do the hard moves like 3 out of 5 times ;'/

also im not a combo type player. i mostly specials and counter attacks, and only combo if my normal offence isnt working.

I can beat all of my friends at KOF games most of the time. Even my friend with a neo cab gets served. When I play at Sunnyvale Golf Land though, I get my ass handed to me. I've been playing KOF obsessively for about half a year or so, and I sort of have the hang of the combos. I've been playing KOF at leisure for about 2 or 3 years though.
