I spent some time with Otogi this evening (off Issue #19's demo disc from the Official XBOX Magazine). I played through the demo level a couple of times trying out the different weapons and spells, and I had some fun with it.

I need some honest opinions from people who have the game...is there enough gameplay to warrant buying it, or do you basically just do the same thing through each level? I see that there appears to be some RPG and unlockable elements tucked into the game, but will the player stay motivated enough to finish it?

The game is a little more tedious than it should be. Especially since the enemies seem to be more annoying, or frustrating, than fun to fight. I still love the atmosphere of the game, and it's pretty fun. I got it as a present...I wouldn't have paid more than 20 bucks for it myself.

It also sucks how you can't have more than one spell equipped at the same time. Or you can't switch between swords mid-level. It's really not as deep a game as it appears to be at first...still not bad, I recommend but not for more than 20.

Hope this helps.

Hmmm is Otogi comparable to the new PS2 Shinobi game in anyway? I'm trying to get a feel for how it plays.

Otogi..........
Does it look nice? - YES!
Is it repetetive? - yes.
Are the levels varied? - well, sort of, but not spectacularly so.
Is it fun? - for the most part, yes.
Does it get annoying? - oh good lord yes!

Putting aside the simplistic controls and combat, Otogi's main problems is the difficulty - which seems almost flat for the first 10 levels (and easy as hell), then suddenly it ramps up the challenge unexpectedly about halfway through - then sort of drops it a bit - then ramps it back up again for the very last section.
(Que much restarting of levels and gnashing of teeth).

Oh and by the way - destroying stuff gets dull verry quickly in this game. I dunno why, it just feels more like 'going through the motions' than cathartic wanton destruction.

I didn't like it.

After reading all the positive reviews and comments about it, I really wanted to...but I just couldn't get into it. Got to about the 5th or 6th level then couldn't force myself to play it any more.

Don't buy it, don't rent it, stay away from it. Really misleading game.

All you people are insane this is one if the best games I have ever played.

If you quit on level 4 of 29 you must suck and found the game difficult.

Yes ths game is not for people who give up because the game is too "hard".

I love difficult games and this game has it in spades.

Definitely rent, the game's difficulty scale climbs fast, very fast. But, you cannot deny the fact that the game is oozing with style. Put Dynasty Warriors 4 with Shinobi = Otogi. Anyone who says this game blows is nothing but a whine tit.

Keep the blobs of both sides of the ship or it will sink when the big one arrives.

This is one of the finest games to come out since, well, last November (import my friends!). Classic level by level gameplay, with perfect control, style and music! Reimnds me of the old days! Too diffficult? Play the Import, then we'll talk difficult!

I didn't find the game particularly difficult, it just wasn't what I was lead to believe from playing the demo at E3. I forgot what level I quit on, but I had tried SEVERAL times to beat it. It involved a lot of falling bridges and water that I couldn't stand in for very long.

I wanted to dash around in mid-air and slash the shit out of everything, not have to fucking monitor my lifebar as it slowly drains in the bottom corner at the same.

That was the last stage I played (until I continue later). You didn't even make it to the boss? When I beat that boss I was (seriously) down to my last ounce of life, but I only got like 66% of the souls so I've got to play the stage over again:(

Oh I got to the boss alright. But I was on the edge of death as I did, and I lost....again....and again....and again. I didn't really like that every level could be beaten by:

a) Getting to the end as fast as possible, beat the boss.
b) Collect X amount of Y item
c) Kill X amount of Y enemy

So essentially you're compelled to blaze through the level as fast as possible. YET you're rewarded for more collected items, killed enemies, and longer combos. I.E.- Spending as much time as possible defeating enemies. I can't handle that kind of imbalanced design.
