After reading through the Darkstalkers appeaciation thread, it reminded me of another game series that does not get the love it deserves.

The atmosphere, the music, the graphics, everything about this game oozes style. While 1 may have not been a classic. Onimusha 2 is a modern day classic in my opinion. Not many games give you as much replay value as this game. You have 4 different side characters you can play as, and each one tells the story from thier point of view, so you feel the urge to actually go back and play it with all 4 to see the whole story.

Now, I feel I am in the minority with actually liking this game. Too many people I know have just dismissed the game as "Resident Evil with swords", but the game is so much more then that.

I was wondering what people here thought of the game, weather it is a classic or merely resident eivl with ninja:p

I've had my eye on the XBOX version of Genma Onimusha, especially now that it sells for next to nothing.

After playing the disappointing Dino Crisis 3 demo for the XBOX, I think I'm ready to swear off survival horror and next-gen games in general....but Onimusha beckons me.

Please tell me the save game system is more flexible than in something like Resident Evil...

You can save as often as you want, so you never need to worry about saving ink ribbons. Also, unlike survival horror, where it is not always a good idea to kill everything, in the Onimusha series, you want to kill everything, and you have the tools to do it:D

Sounds like everything that I hated about RE and its ilk have been rectified in Onimusha. Maybe I'll give it a try...it's only $15 these days!
Thank you for answering my questions!

Onimusha 2 rocks. The only thing I haven't completed is issen mode.

Playing as each character is sweet. Magoichi being the best, his flamethrower kicks ass but his issen attack rarely connects, specially on charging enemies.

Onimusha 2 is one of those games that looks amazing in the hands of a pro. Enemies give away attack signals so you can always find the best tactic for the situation.

I just wish the game didn't slow down when performing a ten hit issen combo with the hammer.

Magoichi is a badass with that flamethrower, but I vary always been partial to using Kotaro more then anyone else. Now matter what game, I always seem to pick the fast combo friendly character who dies in like 2 hits:p

Onimusha 2 rules!

The best is when you beat the game on hard mode and unlock ultimate mode. That way you can play through the whole game with the RekkaKen (and yes, I do get the SF2 reference). The special attack on that sword owns all!:buttrock:

I loved Onimusha for the PS2. I don't have the XBOX version so I can't compare, but I thought number one was great.

I got my copy brand new for free... the English language school I was working for at the time was using Takeshi Kaneshiro as its spokesperson, so the school was giving away free copies of 'Onimusha' as an incentive to sign up for English lessons. Not enough people signed up, so after the campaign ended, another teacher and I got to keep the remaining copies.

Anyway...

Anyone who's ever been to Japan on a hot summer night will know that they captured the atmosphere perfectly.

Plus the girl ninja is a total babe.

Never did clear the 'Oni Pots' mini-game however.

Onimusha 2 was much better graphically and more refined in the gameplay area than Onimusha 1.It was an improvement IMO.The only thing is that the main character is kind of boring when compared to the original game's star.I am glad that he is returning for Onimusha 3 along with Jean reno.

I hadnt played these games before last xmas. I picked up Onimusha for about 7 bucks not expecting much, and god damn I fell in love. Best next gen game I have played in a while. Great atmosphere, style, gameplay, it hit all the things that I didnt think was possible on a first gen ps1.5, Onimusha 2 is also awesome, just wish they could have had japanese dialouge as an option....
Respect for the Onimusha.

I on the other hand do not get the SF2 reference, but I am guessing it has something to do with Ken's Flaming Uppercut.

I normally wouldn't promote stealing, but for these games, I think it would be well worth it.;)

I actually like the the original a lot better in terms of plot and atmosphere. My only real complaint was that it was so short.

I didn't like the plot or the atmosphere of the second one at all. I especially hated the whole "dating sim" element with the sub characters. I mean, I played the game for action, not to spend time giving gifts to characters I really didn't like all that much anyway. I also hated the final boss...it felt way out of place (along with a lot of the technology present near the end of the game). the only redeming quality IMO was the gameplay itself. it was more fluid than the first, and the onimusha transformation was very helpful in a pinch.

I'm kind of apprehensive about the third, simply because of the whole time-travel and location elements they have announced, but i'm optimistic.
