Both have content edited in the US versions (the manga and the Anime). If you think you want to buy it, in this one instance I'll recommend fan subs. TokyoPoop shouldn't have fucked with it.

I canceled my order for Initial D when I found that out.

You can read all about the fuck job they did on it here.

I normally don't recommend it but I suggest you get the bootleg anime DVD because Tokyopop messed it up, not to mention its only 3 episodes per DVD for $20, talk about a ripoff. As for the manga, they also edited some things but as of right now it doesn't affect the storyline in anyway.

Oh, and if your not sure if its good, it is. I like the series a lot. If your a car fan, you will love it, if your not a car fan, you will like it. Now bow down to Ryosuke Takahashi.

It's supposed to be very good, but I don't know personally.

All that is available to me is fan subs or bootlegs, something I don't do either of. In a way TokyoPoop has save me a shitload of money by fucking the Anime up, as it means I don't have to buy a shitload of discs from them on this one.

So slerch where can I get the original one with english subtitles?

If you mean a "true non-bootleg" release, then nowhere that I am aware. The Japanese R2 release(s) have no subtitles on them at all.

If you want the bootleg, there are plenty of places that sell them on the net, or you can check eBay, as 8 out of 10 eBay Anime auctions seem to be bootlegs.

Fan subs wouldn't be hard to find using Kazaa or any P2P network.

I won't help you find bootlegs any further than this though. Either way is theft, but at least with fan subs some asswipe bootlegger doesn't get any money for it.

It looks like Tokyopop wanted to make it into The Fast and the Furious. They figure thats the kind of shit us americans want. That sucks I am going to try and find a fansub. If I were to buy a bootleg it would be like buying a neo-geo rom game. So I will also not buy bootlegs. If I am going to get into this hobby i would rather do it the right way.

My guess, having not seen the link to your auction, is that these are bootlegs?

So, where can I get the official Hong Kong version from?

There is no "official" hong kong version. All of them are bootlegs. You can find them on ebay.

And just a FYI, the hong kong company stole the translation scripts from Central Anime (the group who originally fansubbed the series on VHS) so the boots have the same subs as the fansubs.

Shit, I'm surprised it's taken them this long to steal fansubbed scripts! It's better than what they normally do: translate JPN to CHN then from CHN to ENG. Sometimes it turns out OK, most times... not.

And there are a FEW official HK releases. Odex Private Ltd. was a big bootleg company that did "quality" bootlegs. Pioneer saw this and approached them to do some LEGIT releases in the HK region to test the water. Being that HK is part of China, and the Chinese belief is imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, (which is why there are a lot of Chinese bootlegs, it' should be an HONOR to have you stuff so highly regarded as to be copied) when given the oportunity to do a legit release, they jumped on it.

What titles do they have licenses for? Only 3 that I am aware of:

Boys Be (great series and the HK subs aren't bad)
Vandread (rather have the legit R1 release, but to each their own. They only have the license for Season 1 I believe)
and
Pretear

Anything else they do, if memory serves me, is a boot. So if you look at their page and series you want to buy and it's not listed above, if you don't want a boot, don't buy from them.
