I just mailed 5 MVS Kits fully insured for nearly a 1,000.00 USD and it was almost $60.00 EMS Shipping.

Airmail should not cost very much but it will take around 10 days.

Ouch! That's gonna hit someone hard on customs charges and VAT...

That's what I was thinking. How much are the customs charges in the UK, and what is that VAT? I see it all the time on UK websites, but don't know what it is, is it just the equivalent of sales tax in the US?

its actually a flat rate of 17.5 percent of which if you are incorrectly charge 14.75percent refundable

but........

with government fees and parcelforce release fees it pushes it up near the 22-25percent mark

i got simpsons season 3 - it cost me £25 of which i paid £4.17 in duty, but royal mail wanted £4 for releasing it so in total duty wise i paid £8.17 so that is around 33percent

parcelforce take a bigger slice of the pie

VAT = Value Added Tax

It's a tax the government apply to all non-essential items. 90% of the time the VAT is already calculated in the price you see, unlike in the US where you have the price stated+Tax.

VAT is payable on all videogame hardware and software whether domestic or imported.

As Buster says, the carrier usually levies an admin fee on top of this (which is + VAT).

You can't claim it back if you're a UK resident which is why we hate paying it.

Oh, there's also a small import charge fee imposed by the EU for any goods not originating from Europe.
