The exact same thing happened the time I bought KOF2001. The guy at the electronics store kept giving me a funny look as if he were saying 'Why are you paying $400 for a game?
Same thing when I bought ROTD.
Two weeks ago I preordered Matrimelee. The guy actually snickered when I told him I wanted a Neo-Geo game.

Of course on a monetary sense, our hobby/obsession makes no sense either but if you have 1000% more fun with KOF2001 AES vs a port, then its worth it to me!

They laugh, because they are misguided children, blinded by the hype of the next generation of consoles and not the goodness of what Neo Geo stands for to all of us for so many years now...BEST...SYSTEM...EVAAAAAAAAA!!! eh, don't let it get to you. My close friends understand, but my younger bro (18, I'm 20) and his friends are always on my case about how I could have a PS2 and all this junk and how GGXX is way better than any Neo game. I just tell whatever, I want a Neo, not a PS2. The only game that is worth playing in my mind on PS2 is VF4 and I'll get it when its dirt cheap

Well on the other hand, there is a lot of value in owning a PS2, Gamecube, or maybe an Xbox. Good games cheap. Its true for any mainstream game machine isn't it?
But to analogize systems to say cars, these big 3 are to Taurus, Camry, Altima, Accord, Jetta as Neo Geo is to that old Corvette, Porche, or whatever.
Neo Geo was never intended to be a bread n butter game machine. SNK Electronics Corp made some hardware to allow their game design creativity to come to life. Maybe someone thought it be a good idea if they redesigned and repackaged their MVS motherboard to get a taste of what Nintendo, Sega, and NEC was doing at the time as well.
12 years later, here we are.

I thought about throwing a hadouken or two as well, but then I wouldn't have been able to pre-order the game.
@ EvilMike, don't worry, that wasn't Akihabara, that was just a big chain electronics store.
One thing to bear in mind though is that even in Japan, most people have NO idea what a Neo-Geo is.
Ten years ago all home video game systems were referred to under the blanket term 'Famicom' (just like we call all brands of tissue 'Kleenex'.)
These days all home video game systems are generally referred to under the blanket term 'Purei-sutei' (Play-Stay). I'll let you figure out what that means by yourself.

I play ports make_fac but ok ports are even expensive (no where near carts but...) $60 dollars for Kof 2001 most games are $40 new. But truthfullt NGPC has become expensive too, the cart prices for some games are in the $50 because faggot "collectors" pillage the inventory of alot of games 
but it is still relatively cheap. I feel your pain though, I am going to make a super gun and it seems to be very expensive eek! but I respect you guys alot keeping on buying the Neo it will pay off in the end through appreciation of goods wink

My one friend kinda laughed at my when i told him I just won a Neo Geo on ebay. he said why man you will jsut get bored of it in a few months. Then my other friend who loves fighters looks at me and asks " you got a Neo Geo? those FUCKING rock" I then tell my friend who laughed no I wont cause I got Steve here who dost not get bored of fighters and I could play him all day long. Me and my friend steve Play Mvs C2 and C sv SNK 2 all the time.
