I don't agree with Andro Dunos imo that game is bad ass. But I agree with both of the Samurai Shodown's.

I would like to read the reviews for KOF 94/95. And I remember the Fatal Fury 3 review. Said it wasn't very innovative, but solid or something. But um... I suppose most of those reviews are kinda close to the mark(In my mind). SamSho1 and 2 being straight 9's is interesting.

I was flipping through old EGM mags a few weeks back myself. It's pretty interesting to go back and read what was being said back then about these current games..

The only score up there that really took me by surprise is Last Resort. 5 6 5 5?? Smells like bullshit to me.

SSII = 10 10 10 10

Few games deserve that honor, and SSII is one of them.

My fav reviews and pages are from Diehard Game Fan, every issue almost up to late 90s have high quality paper print of pics and reviews of Neo-Geo games, they don't necessarily give scores (who gives a rats about it anyway). To this day, I still flip the pages of this, yeah, including Aug 1995, mis print of Japanese racial slurs.

Hmm I think the scores are quite low..

I mean, most of these are still a blast to play and still will be in 10 years. IMO that makes a game a true classic and therfore it deservers a very high score.

Last Resort is just bullshit... When that game came out, it already deserved a 10 for the style and badness.. And the gameplay is worth much more as well.

Funny to see how much they liked WHperfect.. :)

EGM were pretty fair to Neo Geo games.... except KOF95 and KOM.... KOF95 is better than 94, so it ought to have scored higher (i did remember their complains that the damage is too high). KOM is a fun game.... deserves alittle better score across the board but overall, I thought EGM did a good job reviewing them.

8s and 9s for the World Hero games is crazy.

Although Slerch agrees I'm sure! :D

I have a lot of those original reviews at home, including the one where SamSho 1 was declared game of the year (it looks like Steve found the annual buyers guide).

They're nearly all at my parents house. I should be there this summer, if I find a scanner I may scan'em and put'em up.

If people do have scans of them, feel free to send them to me.

MOST WANTED: I was a devoted reader of VG&CE in the early 90s (when it was good), they did a top-notch preview of the Neo Geo that sold me on the system. I had the issue but I lost it over the years (though it was the cover story, VG&CE continued its then tradition of weird cover art by placing a green alien on the cover). If anyone has it, please scan it and send it to me.

I know almost everybody dislike World heroes games ( myself inc. ) , but those score were majorly obtained because of the massive potential the game had at that time.

Quite spectacular for its release, but very dated nowadays. wink

NeoDragoN:
What do they mean? like what is the first number for etc?
if i remember gamefan Alex it always had 4 reviewers who played everygame

so those marks are from individual reviewers

Magician Lord is overrated, the main character has athritis.

Last Resort, FF3, Mutation Nation, King of Monsters 2 and Sidekicks are underrated.

They're EGM reviews, not GameFan. They had the review crew. For most of this period, as I recall, the first number two numbers were Steve Harris and Ed Semrad, the third was some tool in a referee jersey, and the fourth was the insecure Sushi-X.

Still, EGM was better than DieHard Gamefan. I bought 3 issues, then stopped. Too much flash, very little substance (to me, text = Substance)

You're not the only one who believes in that philosophy ^_^

Yeah, EGM loved the WH games. In fact, I still recall issue #60 where Jet won the Game of the Month. EGM was good to WH franchise. I remember when Jet was in the development stages, EGM actually wrote a preview that said, "This game may challenge Street Fighter and be the top dog!"

Something like that.

BTW, Bobak, just curious, why did you say "insecure" in regards to Sushi-X? I have a strong feeling there was more than one man who played the dubious role of Sushi-X over the years.

EGM really stands the test of time, the writing in its heyday was really good and cut through a lot of the bullshit and just discussed the games at hand. GameFan is almost embarrassing to read now, their biggest draw was their intense coverage of imports (no surprise, since during their formative phase they were also running an IMPORT MAIL ORDER biz on the side). Lots of screenshots, bush league fanzine-level writing.

Even in its current, somewhat weaker form, EGM is still the class of videogame journalism (either in print or on the web). Most of those Neo scores are on the money, although I do also disagree with the score for Last Resort. One of the greatly underrated Neo gems.

It was 2 that won "Game of the Year", wasn't it? I'll see if I can't dig up the Buyer's Guide they had it in myself. I just remember being dissapointed that Street Fighter iteration-X didn't win that year - I hadn't heard more than a few words about the Samurai series at the time...

I know a lot of people are commenting on "low" scores, but it should be noted that for quite some time (until the issues in the 50's at least), EGM had much tougher scores. Zelda: A Link the the Past got a 9,9,8,8, IIRC. It's straight 10's these days with a text box full of gushing...

I must admit, though, I never did find Last Resort/Andro Dunos to be as good as other shooters from that time (Gradius 3, Thunder Force X, Gates of Thunder, etc), and these games didn't score that much higher...

Anyone remember reading the issue where Dion sent in a letter? I remember reading it at the time, not knowing anything about Dion. Then years later, a good friend of mine must have been going through his old issues and saw it. Pretty funny stuff.
