I was wondering which collector do you respect the most and why. Some collectors can be complete jerks yet I see people giving them respect due to the size of their collection. I personally think that even though a collector may have over 100 games, they shouldn’t ram that fact into people’s faces who have less games than them. I think a good collector should want to share pictures of their collection with other but to not be too snooty about it. I am sure that any major collector would be proud of their collection but they should not turn this pride into hubris.

I think that Shawn is one of those collectors that doesn’t shove the fact that his collection is better than most into other people’s faces. He has also made this fine website for us to use. He has also made sure that we get future home cartridges releases from Playmore. Shawn lets us use the selling forum free of charge when he could charge us a fee. For this I thank him.

I would like to know your thoughts and feelings about the different collectors out there. I would like to hear about the ones that you respect and loathe. Maybe if you do decide to mention the ones that you have ill will against them, maybe they could learn to better themselves instead of being selfish and snobbish. I welcome everyone to take part in this discussion. I look forward to hearing your views on this subject.

I am the collector I respect the most. Why, I don't even know what I own, and that's why I love myself even more.

I don't know anyone here that I disrespect... I think for the most part, everyone here (whether it is a gamer or collector) is pretty cool.

Huh?

Collectors either are rich or have nothing else to spend their money on.

No disrespect intended to anybody here....
I don't respect the rich in the least, why should I? Either they worked their ass off to get that way or wealth was given to them. Either way, it doesn't make their life any better if they know that working joes like me respect them or hate them. It doesn't matter.

I respect the man/woman, what he/she is, their character, humility and virtues and all that stuff. If you are male, female, black, white, green, blue, or an alien if you are nice, respectful, decent, virtuous, bla bla bla, I will like and respect you.

Ok now i'm going back to work, my break is over.

I'm just bemused by the whole collector thing, and couldn't really give a flying fuck if any of them tries to rub my nose in it or not. Surely if you're bothered by it then you're just jealous?

I think it is cool to see what people have. It makes me feel less alone and that people out there must feel the same way I do about games.
But I think the annoying collectors are the ones that just collect and don’t really use what they have/ have a passion for video games.
And fan boys suck example… ps2 is better … xbox is better …. 3do is better,,,,,
I think all systems have fun games if you have the money get more systems than one. But don’t shoot down other systems if you cant get them.

I'm sure you want someone to argue about Chris and Dion's collections here.

if you ask, I don't respect NGfreaked stuff.

I respect every collection out there, be it small or huge, be it Mint or poor.

I respect original stuff, not freaked stuff. wink

I don't really respect other people for their homecart collections, much less MVS/NGPC, but I have to admit, there are 2 people who collections that I was once in awe of. Neo Bomberman for his soundtracks and mooks, and Jennety for his soundtracks. Really incredible to find people that have as much passion as I do about those things. But for the people with lots of homecarts, if I friends with them, it's for other reasons, like ability to talk games. Just me. I'd sell my AoF 3 cart but not the soundtracks. wink

I consider myself a player. Thou I like to collect I don't get worked up over if my stuff is in mint or has a box. I collect for my fun, not to try to make money or impress anyone.

All a big collection means is that you have more money to spend on that type of thing then someone else. I think a lot of people mix up respect for envy.

"That's cool!! I wish I had it."

is much different from:

"Man you're cool, because you have it."

I have to admit, this pisses me off a little, and I don't like collectors that come off this way. Tehre are a handful of big tymer collectors with tons of carts that I can name as collectors for the sake of owning something expensive. Like owning a BMW just for the sake of owning a BMW is stupid, whereas owning an M3 for the sake of owning a very well engineered automobile is not bad at all. Just how I see it.

I mean, how many people own Chibi Maruko and can even read Japanese?

How many people know how to play Syougi?

Stakes Winner 2? I only know one person to talk about the gameplay with me and that was Neo Bomberman, and the poor guy doesn't own the game anymore and has been looking for it in mint shape, but alas! all the owners are keeping it in the plastic bags on their shelves. How sad. Even more sad are the countless Blazing Stars owned by people that never play it. For the gamer collector, these are bad scenarios. Of course, for the gamer, there's always MVS. Some of us need the homecart though. It's a sickness... the kind I like to have.

Honestly, I love looking at people's collections. Probably because I would love to have a huge game room/collection, but I know I never will because I would feel crazy. Like those middle-aged woman that went over-the-top collecting beanie babies a few years ago. Plus, I'm the kind of gammer that finds two or three games that I like and plays them to death. I am working on an AES collection though- every jap release, purchased new since Slug 3 (the cart that made me collect).

The collectors I do respect are the ones with a nice set-up. I'm always working on trying to improve my home theater set up and I like to see ones that have some thought put into it. Nice arrangement of equipment and nice storage for the games/systems, interior design type stuff, as opposed to piles of crap all over the place.

The thing about collecting is that it can become a bit of a 'Dick-size' thing.
Some people will try and collect more of whatever to feel 'better' than other people (dont ask why - must be a human subconcious thing).

In Neo terms this translates to people feeling somehow special and privaleged to have that ultra-rare cart or proto or whatever (mentioning no names :D )

Same thing happens with die-hard PC gamers. Trying to get the best setup to be better than their mates.

Any form of collecting can turn into a 'dick-size' thing if you take it to the extreme.
But most people here seem to be OK about it. I could mentin a few collectors who get on my tits, but I dont want to create any enemies here.

Personally, it not about whether or not I respect or hate a collector, I just try to understand the mentality. ie, I have a friend who has a sealed Radiant Silvergun who will brag constantly about his find, but he has -never- played the game. Ever. He just read/heard it was a collectible and sits on it. Whether thats good or bad, i dunno...i just cant understand it lol Then again he doesnt understand my gaming habits either...I've been playing since the late 80s and early 90s and own a grand total of just under 50 games, mainly because I keep stuff that I only consider to be grade A and worth heavy replays. So based on that I think it's all subjective....

Shawn and Charlie.

We all know about Shawn.

Charlie is an interesting guy, though. He's pretty much all Neo. I guess with the amount of stuff I have, I'd have to consider myself a gamer/collector, but Charlie puts my gaming knowledge to shame. Usually, people have his attitude all wrong. They think he's either a) just a "worthless" collector who keeps crap on his shelf or b) cynical for no damn reason. But I tell you neither is true. He's more of a gamer than 99% of the people on the boards - THAT's why his ass is so damn bitter. He has good reason to be. He's got mooks up the wazoo, and he's educated himself with those. He respects the Neo - and for that I applaud him.

Andres, if you consider yourself a collector, then you are a collector I respect, too :p

I have always wanted a big collection. I know that it will probably never happen since I am out of a job right now. It seems to me that the guys who have the big collections command the most respect around here. My thinking was that if I had a big collection, then maybe people would like me. My past efforts to be unique failed miserably. No one really respects a fool no matter how big their collection is. I seemed to have gone about everything the wrong way. Oh well, it is never too late to change. :)

i dont think it is as much about how much you have but about how much you have played.
most of my freinds have had diff games systems in their life. they dont have many games now maybe 20
games at any one time. i have over 1000 real games. but i still have every game since i was 9.
my friends are still just as cool cus they have
a gamers history. i can talk games with them
for about almost any system. even if they did not have the system. they got to have fun with my stuff. there are people i know with many systems
but they suck cus they really never loved the games. when you talk to them you can tell something is just diff and not cool.
i am a true game junky i listen to video game
music in my car mostly from a remix web site.
i get 5 game mags a month and read each front to back.i watch video game shows on cable tv.
ill play a sega master system game one day
metal slug 3 the next and halo a little later.
and all my friend are the same way they have a love for many diff games new and old.

You don't have to pay tuition though, right? Why are you so poor?

When I acquire a game, I play it. What does that make me? glee

I've never really given much thought about the topic. As a general rule, I don't get into the "hate" thing. Someone really has to push me pretty hard to get me to turn that bit on.

I don't get bent out of shape when someone brags about something they legally acquired. If it is that important to them that's ok by me. It does not in any way bring me down. Why should it?

I am broke because I don't have a job. I feel bad about asking my dad for more Neo money. Just this month I have paid $1,100 for just two games. A year ago I would never have thought about doing something like that. I really don't know what gets into me. I just feel that I have to buy games even if I don't like them. I have about 20 games that I have never played and don't intend to. I think that it is some sort of sickness that comes over me. I feel that I have to consume more even if I don't need it.

I find myself making lists of games that I want. I spend hours each day just figuring out what is the next game that I will get. I make lists upon lists of the games I want and I hope that I will find happiness when I get them all. Even after I complete that list, another list will soon follow and I will want those games as well. In one year I have spent over $7,000 on video games. I wish I could pay my dad back but I just can't get a job. I feel like a loser.

Also, I find myself looking at other people's collections for hours each day. I just stare at them wishing that mine was the best and the biggest. I wish I was the top collector but that will never happen unless I can find a well paying job. I can't take my dad's money forever and it makes me feel bad that I do. I am in a bit of a rut and I don't know how to get away from it. At this point, I don't see how I can get away from this Neo disease. crying

Interesting topic .....

I consider myself a collector and although I play all of my games I am very picky about the condition .

Some people get mad at me because some of my games are still sealed but I would never own a game and not play it .

But there are certain situations where I get a NEW sealed game and dont open it for a while ,

EXAMPLE :

When Metal Gear Solid came out I bought it used and played it all the way through , I also got the VR missions disc used and played it through also .... both discs were scratched so I either sold them to friends or traded them in for other used games , like I said I am very picky about condition so I would not keep a scratched game in my game library or consider it part of my collection .....but hey everyone needs MGS in HIS/HER gaming library ...right .

so I recently won this auction

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3021053248

Since I have allready completed the game there is no immediate reason to open it , If there is some day I decide I want to replay the game I will crack that sucker open ...but there are so many games it might never happen ....

does this make me a bad guy ?
