Capcom vs. SNK 2 design inconsistencies

Ok, I finally got this game, and it isn't as bad as I thought, way better than the first one.

But something still confuses me, has anyone else noticed the radical character sprite inconsistencies in this game?

For instance, Morrigan's sprites are the exact same ones from Marvel vs. Capcom (well actually from Vampire Savior, capcom's been using the same ones all along).

Sakura has the exact sprites she's ever had.

Sagat looks the same as he did in Alpha series (which is cool, cause he rules ass that way), same with Zangeif, same as he did in the other VS. games and Alpha.

Ken and Ryu look like a mix between their 3rd strike and Super SF2X designs.

Yet characters like Vega (Bison) have been totally re-done (not for the better, his alpha version looks cooler), even though his other alpha counterparts have their same sprites.

Also something strange is Chun Li has the exact same sprites she does from 3rd Strike. I just noticed this today, cause it's the first time I played her. I was shocked at first, cause I thought she looked really lame in 3rd strike (am i the only one?), and this being a new game and all (not to mention 3rd strike is a long ways off from the VS. games), I could see them using her alpha sprites again, but 3rd strike?

It's like the designers were playing MUGEN just before they started making the game.

All this considered, capcom was very lazy on some of the characters, they should have re-done everyone, it seems like they cut allot of corners doing this.

i don't have a problem with chunli's design.there is nothing wrong with the shiny legs of chunli.she is well animated in CvsS2.even though sagat, morrigan and some others have teh exact same sprite, they have been given more frames of animation to make up for it.the only problem i have is the way capcom's artists design the SNK fighters.Rock's art sux,kyo looks goofy, iori looks like a retard, yamazaki looks downright dirty, kim looks like a 'village man' and athena looks terrible.the only snk fighter's art capcom did well was mai's IMO.

I have always liked the look of Chun Li's 3rd Strike look, it has been my favorite of her designes. But to each their own.

Also did you notice, they re-drew Yun's sprite from SF3, but just decided to keep Chun-Li's animation...capcom is nuts.>>>

Capcom definately needs to redraw all of the Alpha sprites. And thank God they redrew Bison. IMO the Alpha sprite for him was absolutely horrible, he looked like a fat a$$ that had been eating too many donuts! Now he looks very similar to SSF2X which is great! All the new charas look pretty sweet though, espicially Eagle. What an improvement from SF1 huh? Heheh.

All of the "inconsistencies" you mention were present in the first CvS, except for Chun-Li (which is definitely an improvement). This is nothing new.

Hell yes it would have been nice to have all of the characters redone (most notably Morrigan), but if that were to be, the game would probably still be in development.

I think the old sprites do somehow look better in this game than the original CvS, because of the background style (ala MvC2). CvS bg's were high-res, but the characters were low-res. In CvS2 the backgrounds are 3D, where resolution isn't as important. The old sprites don't seem to "clash" as much now.

lol wow really? She looks like total shit to me, he walk is sooo goofy and dumb looking. The only time she looks cool is during her hundred strike kicks.

But then she goes back into her lame stance and walk and i'm like nooooo!!!!! She looked the coolest in Alpha. In fact I think she looks so lame, I never use her in 3rd strike, or CvsSNK2 for that matter.

haha, yea that is strange. They also keep alpha sprites like Sagat and Zangeif, yet they totally re-do vega, i like his fatter alpha version better.

That would be the problem, I thought CvsSNK sucked bigtime, and I stopped playing it after about an hour, never noticed it I guess.

Actually, I liked Capcom's profile pics in this game. While SNKs are always up to their usual high quality, I think Capcom conveyed a real sense of character in many drawings.

Look at Rock, for example. In SNK's rendition, he looks confident and solid, like a Rock , staring right at you. But Capcom's rev paints a different picture, with Rock looking quizzical and unsure of himself. He gives you the impression of the newcomer he is supposed to be. He is full of terror and fear. He seems more human.

Just a thought.

Hey, GregN.:

Is the Capcom Rock profile the same one that's used for your avatar?

I haven't played CvsSNK2 yet, and I've never seen your avatar used in the Garou series, so I was just curious.

While we're on the subject of the game's sprite inconsistencies I thought I'd make a comment concerning the in game art as well. I definitely think that if a third chapter of this series comes about, the character profiles should be rendered by Shinkirou only. I suffered through Kinu's renditions of the characters in the original CvS and I am equally disgusted with the art she provided in CvS2. In my opinion, Shinkirou is the greatest video game artist ever. He does for video game characters what Alex Ross has done for comic characters; providing each of them with an unmatched gritty, life-like appearance. I really appreciate how determined all of his characters look...like he/she knows that he/she is the one who is going to come out on top. I realize that both artists' works are there to provide a contrast between the two companies' styles but I've just found Shinkirou's stuff to be the "far and beyond the call" better of the two.

Edit = minor re-wording

I gotta agree with Starrgroove. I just really can't stand any more of Kinu's art work. It use to be so good in the SF3 series, what the hell happened?! Shinkirou's work simply blows it away. When the two artist's works are side by side you can really tell who works harder and who has more talent. Shinkirou baby!

I love Shinkirou's stuff, but he's either a love/hate kinda guy -- not too many peeps seem impartial to him.

Chun Li didn't retain all her SFIII animation; I'm guessing the 3rd strike sprite was used to represent the P groove -- Yun and Chun Li have an opening together also. From a fighting standpoint, Chun Li is at her tops -- almost up to par with her dominance in 3rd strike.

Man, you guys are harsh!

Admittedly, they drew more new sprites (21 or so) for CvS1 than they did for 2 (around 15), but they still had a big old load!

If you'll notice, Chun's sprite IS different. She has the same stance and moves, but she has a different sprite. They couldn't use the 3s sprite even if they wanted to, I think...

And as for the artistic differences? Well, that's a matter of personal taste, now isn't it?

But I agree that Morrigan could use a new sprite, though I kinda like her old one, too.

yeah its true that chunli and yun does not have their 3rd strike sprites.me being a hardcore 3rd strike player can notice the differences.the sprite of chunli and yun are redrawn like their 3rd strike counterparts with less animations.its different.i suggest those who have CvS2 and 3rd strike, play more of 3rd strike and u will see some huge differences.
