I know this topic has been covered before but if someone was getting into NEO GEO now, which would you recommend, AES or MVS. I know that MVS is cheaper and you can get every NEO GEO game, it just feels wierd. I mean on AES you have nice boxs, mauals, and you can place them on a shelf, but with MVS, the carts look terrible. What would be the best possible package to have?

Homecarts. Do not be fooled into thinking MVS will satisfiy your hunger for games/gaming, because homecarts are what you really want for gaming.

so what are you going to do in the first place ? stare at the nice box/manuals placed on the shelf all day long or are you going to play the games ? a game it's a game doesn't matter if the cart looks terrible or not

i say go MVS

You can also play with the homecarts too.

So I guess, then it sounds like MVS to play and AES to collect. How about getting both. I think I will just save up for an AES and some games to start off with.

The easiest way to go: AES and MVS. For me, anyway. I've had an AES and a Neo CD for years. Now with the Phantom-1 converter, I can basically buy any game I want at whatever price. You can't get all the debug options without a debug chip, but you can play the games nonetheless.

Furthermore, it balances things out. You want the nice cases, manuals, and all, you have the option. You just want to get your hands on the games, you have that option with a Phantom-1. The AES+Phantom-1 combination might not be the cheapest, but it gives you a freedom with your game purchases. Run with the older AES carts and the newer games on MVS (that's what I'm doing now).

Now, don't take this as me saying I'm anti-MVS hardware. I'm just a bit biased since I had an AES for years and I really didn't want to sell it (so the Phantom-1 was the ideal upgrade). I definitely would go with your idea of getting into both AES and MVS. It just gives you tons of options as far as what to buy.

I collected Home carts for a long time, but now i collect complete MVS kits. Complete MVS kits come with cool art work, stickers etc, and are harder to find then home carts. Which in my opinion make them very collectable. But of course this is only a opinion .

GAMEFAN, dont be fooled. MVS carts (if you get the right ones) are sooo much better than AES home carts. AES carts are built like shit and the boards flop around in the casing. plaus. the cart shells are made with A cheesy plastic which doesnt react well to oils from you hands and results in finger prints all over the cart. the MVS carts are sooo much more sturdier than the AES carts. the key is to get MVS carts in good condition. hell, the newer MVS carts even have the gold warning stickers on them and variouse colored transparent shells. plus, the fact that you can buy A loose cart for less or the whole kit(which has MUCH more artwork than thier AES counter parts)is reason enough to go MVS. if you can go with both, then more power to you. but if you can only have one...GO MVS!

Thanks all for the replies. I think I will stay with my MVS then and just save up for an AES and Phantom-1 convertor later. That way I have my cabinet and a home system to play on.

Get a super gun and a mvs then you have all the fun of playing the games on yout TV for a lot cheaper

example metal slug aes 1000 bucks
metal slug mvs 45 bucks
motw aes 450 bucks
motw mvs about 100 bucks
it makes sense and you have dipswitch settings to so you get the real deal not cencorship and unlimited continues
aes is starting to get expensive.
a converter does give you the best of both worlds, your choi ce

I you have a lot of money and value the instructions, cases, etc., AES is better. If you just want to play the games, there's no problem with MVS.
