I just got done beating Metal Slug 4 in a half hour. That is not my beef with it. It has some great ideas. (2X machine guns, Snow stage, rope stage, etc...) I did like a few of the bosses too.

But what is dissappointing were the graphics, sound & last boss.

The title screen SUCKS! It looks like someone made it in MS Paint. The other four slugs had beautiful graphics, richly detailed title screens and superb sharpness! (My aes is modded with all the bells/whistles, so it's NOT my tv or system) I couldn't believe SNK/Playmore would release a game of this calibur AFTER Slug 3/KOF2001. It looks as if the resolution on Slug 4 is running at 160 • 120!

All my other AES games look awesome on my set. I would say that they look as good, if not, super close to MVS/RGB quality. Does the MVS cart look this inferior too?

The character select screen is also WASHED out and not detailed. In-game graphics aren't TOO bad, but nothing compared to Metal Slug 2 & X!

The sound just doesn't fit the game either. I loved the tunes from all the previous slugs, but 4 just has something missing.

Let's not even talk about the last boss. I felt like I was playing Sonic the Hedgehog from the Genesis days. Who the fuck is this gay-ass scientist? Also, what are all the "A"s on the missiles, machinery, etc...? Where are all the "X"s?

Overall, I don't even feel that this is worth to sit on my shelf! I did stick up for the title when it originally came out, since I saw video on it and still shots; but my opinion has definitely changed!

If anyone is interested in acquiring my US version, please contact me. It has only been played once (today) and in Brand New condition.

That's all folks,
Kpj

Hurrah!!!

It's not just me and Loopz who realise that MS 4 is a MASSIVE dissapointment.

The whole game is just a giant step backwards for the series.

I'm not gonna bother saying anymore as most people know my overal feelings for this sorry excuse for a cart. :(

Looks like I'll be getting Metal Slug 3 instead when I get around to it. You know if you don't like the game at all Tarma, just send the cart right to my doorstep free of charge. ;)

Guys,

I really wanted to like it, but just couldn't find myself enjoying it at all. I only played to the end so I could have said "Been there, done that"

I love the other slugs, I really do. This one just didn't add up to a worthy sequel.

I am glad that it did come out though. We need every possible title possible to keep the ole Neo alive and kicking.

The "old" SNK still made THE BEST Neo Geo games, there is no other!

Well it seems that some people hate it, many feel it is very good but not up to the level of Slug X or 3, and a few love it. Quite a bit of controversy around this game for sure.

Its clear to see that this Slug was not made by the original Slug team of programmers, artists, and musicians. Also its clear that graphics were reused from prior Slug games. However I like the game a lot, although I admit that X and 3 are better. There is enough new in this game, IMO, to merit the purchase.

Perhaps if there is a future Slug game (5), the complaints mentioned in these forums will be addressed. Regardless, as long as they keep putting them out, I'll buy them . . . I just LOVE this series so much, and feel we are lucky that it had as many sequels as it did. :)

Agreed,

I do love the series; easily one of the best ever out of any genre, I just don't plan on playing it EVER again :)

But keep'em comin'! My check book will always be open for the Neo!

I sincerely hope there is a Slug 5 and that it will erradicate the disappointment of 4.

I think the main reason lying behind the title's failure to live up to expectation is Mega Enterprise. If you look at the other games they've done it's hardly confidence inspiring stuff.

Maybe BrezzaSoft can get the original Nazca programmers back or get Tresure to code the game... just not Mega Enterprise... pleeeaassee :(

I really like MS4 as I said in other related topics. It has all I can expect from a Metal Slug game, so I'm not dissapointed at all.

Maybe you guys are hardcore-Metal Slug players so you may be getting a "little bored" of the series. I only own MS3 and MS4 and I have only played a little to MSX and MS1 in the arcades, so I may not have played to these games as much as you.

It's the only explanation for me, because I REALLY LOVE MS4: awesome music, it's more difficult than MS3 so it has loads of action and fun, and the graphics are OK for me. The zombie stage really blows my mind!

But I still prefer MS3 though. What a game my friends!

Good old days...

• Metal Slug 2 & X are tied in 2nd place!

• Metal Slug 3 is great too, but I like the earlier ones better! (infant Neo)

First of all i have to say that the game is mainly made by Noise not brezza. Brezza are the KOF guys :)

I like the game. I guess most people complaining about MS4 just playd to much games of the series :)
The art is awesome (Tonko is god ;) And the music is the best i have heard the last years in game genre. You really hear that it is made by a professional studio and not just by "normal" sound artists. I really must note that everyone should hear to the music, because it is verry good.

Tarma you damn Bastard !!!

never ever talk something like that, would be more than wet dreams...,these are dreams never to came true and thats a pain

slug 4 is the biggest disapointment in the series !
lazy job is done there, without any good ideas !

ok.it's still 2d...and thats the good point about !

as a non slug game i would say good, but as a part in the series...hm...no good !

and the music,yeah it's cool for a vidiogame,but not for slug !
i like these jazzy things !

but time changes !

they should realy ask the old team to do the job !
the best what they could do for a slug for,or let it end here ,but that would be not good !

I love the game. I'm not sure what order I'd rank them in though.. they're all very good and it fluctuates depending on my mood :) . I really liked the last boss in this game too. It was different, which I appreciated, and I thought the patterns were pretty neat. I dunno, I just like it  .

Hope for a Metal Slug X2 (remake of Metal Slug 4).

Now stop right there. I think you're talking about Metal Slug 3. MS3 has to have one of the dullest title screens I've seen. That title just isn't as bold as that cannon sticking out of the logo of MS4.

The character select screen is also WASHED out and not detailed. In-game graphics aren't TOO bad, but nothing compared to Metal Slug 2 & X!

Washed out, yes, but looks alot better than those down-syndrome mugs on the KoF 2k1 select screen. Bleech! In game graphics are similar to 2 and X.

The sound just doesn't fit the game either. I loved the tunes from all the previous slugs, but 4 just has something missing.

Hmm.. I'd have to play it more, but I'd have to agree with you on that so far.

Let's not even talk about the last boss. I felt like I was playing Sonic the Hedgehog from the Genesis days. Who the fuck is this gay-ass scientist?

I'd have to agree with you there too. The last boss battle is unspectacular and forgettable. Doesn't hold a cannon to the bosses of X and 3.

The problem is that MS3 was a hard class act to follow, #4 was always going to be a bit of a dissapointment, that doesnt mean its a bad game. Things sometimes just dont get better and better, all good things come to an end. You can only do so much on a given theme, bottom line for me is that #4 was simply boring, seen it all before. Could not say that for its predecesor :)

BTW I would go further and say that #5 would be flogging a dead horse......
The next step would have to be 3D (runs for cover)

I am not expecting Slug 4 to be better than 3. I personally didn't love 3, I liked it.

1, 2 & X were the shit. If it were to play more similar to the prequels, it would have been great.

The title screen DID suck total ass! Look at the quality of the MS4 Logo. It is down right PATHETIC! I could texture a better one with fucking crayons!

If every game were picked apart as harshly as some of you pick apart MS4 (the title screen? WTF?!) then I don't think any game would be considered anything but crap. If you don't like Metal Slug, fine. If you are tired of the same old games, fine. But don't act like MS4 is a piece of shit because of that. It plays... like... a METAL SLUG GAME. Whoooo..... If you don't want to play another, then whatever! I mean... Neo-Geo and other 2D systems are supposed to be for people who can appreciate this kind of game. it's the nuances that make one 2D action game different from another. You want 3D Metal Slug? Go play Mega Man Legends. You want to see a really bad 2D game? Play Conan for the NES. (Seriously, go play it, it's the worst 2D action game I ever played!) But come on! I mean you make fun of this game cause it's a rehash, and then bash the things that are new? Give me a break. Give THEM a break. What did you want them to do, totally reinnovate the Metal Slug series? SNK never added much more to sequels than Playmore added to MS4 compared to its counterparts. If they had changed tons of things, people would be crying that they ruined the series by changing the classic gameplay.
I'm sorry, but the only good reason to bash a game is if it has bad gameplay, and if you love the other Slug games, you can't HATE this one without having some other factor play into it, such as being jaded and tired of this kind of game.
