So many years as a child; reading through tattered issues of EGM and seeing the mysterious and all too expensive "neo geo" systems in the back, import ads.

No one i knew actually owned the system. it was more of a rumor; a childhood tale; an urban legend. Kids spoke of "the cousin" who had one:
"I played it this weekend! It's awesome!"

No one believed them.

Nes; TG-16; Genesis; SNES; PSX; Sega CD; 32x; Saturn; N64; GC; Dreamcast; Gamecube; Xbox; PS2....

I love games...but the birth of 3-d games always seemed awkward. I was never too impressed with the graphics...Save a few gems like Metal Gear Solid; FF7; and a few fighters; it all seemed a bit rushed and mudded. I like the games...but where was the art? The sudden flash of colors on screen? The instruction booklets decorated with character art, crazy items, and cheap but effective stories?

Seemed like the PSX was the age of a cold and soul-less style that everyone wanted to be on top of.

I missed the glory of duking it out in Aladdins Castle with my friends older brother; who was a glorius 2-d extremist and a God at Street Fighter 2: Turbo. I missed the smokey bar at Nino's Pizza in Chicago where fatal fury ate my dad's loose change.

Them came the catalyst to my rebirth; the glorius white box of heaven that spiraled out of the clouds with ENORMOUS amounts of Capcom support: the dreamcast. The re-introduction to the glory of 2-D gaming.

And now...after month's of reading this site; the message boards; the collection pages. After reminiscing about those yellow and white way-in-the-back pages of EGM; I finally own a Neo Geo system.

While its not the glorius Cart system, I'm still mighty proud of the fact I own this kleen and glorious little pet. Shiney and black, the Neo Geo CD system now sits next to my Sony Vega...vomiting out fun and 2-D snacks.

KOF94, KOF95, KOF96, KOF97, KOF98, Metal Slug 2, ADK, World Heroes, World Heroes Jet, Top Hunter, Fatal Fury 3, Double Dragon, Gowcaizer, Art of Fighting, Samurai Showdown 2, 3 and 4 and a few others; the system, one controller...all in virgin, unpopped shape. and all for 300$ even.

welcome me to the boards, gent$

Welcome. Nice post, but lets not forget about GAMEFAN magazine! I, like you, was a dreamer back in the early 90's. I have been a subscriber to EGM since issue #8 (It's been a great ride. My closet is stacked full of EGM mags) and I often drooled at those cheesy photos of the contest winners with the "I'm sure my son and I will love our new Neo-Geo Gold system!" caption under it. Lucky pricks. While EGM often neglected the king of 2D, GAMEFAN often had huge multi-page coverage on EVERY Neo-Geo game. What a beautiful magazine that was, so colorful and their screenshots were the best. I never did subscribe to that magizine (which I regret) but I always picked up an issue that had Neo-Geo coverage. I wonder if they are still in business...

Anyway. I tossed around the idea of the Neo CD as a cheap alternative, but I wanted it all. I wasn't about to shell out the $600+ though, so I waited, and waited, and waited. Until finally the opportunity presented itself...a Neo cab. GIMME GIMME I NEED I NEED!!! The wait made it all the sweeter and finally the Samurai Shodown series was MINE! Damn tha Sega CD port! DAMN IT TO HELL! I ran over that thing on my way out with my Cab in the back. NEVER MORE SHALL I PLAY A SAMURAI GAME WITHOUT SCALING!!! NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!

...

Ahem...welcome, welcome...

PS: I miss the days of staring at the same ad or two page layout of the game you often dreamed about come bedtime. Miss them dearly. Games come and go now, sometimes two or three new games are added to my collection every week. Gone are the days of waiting six months to get a title, then playing it for two years until you got your next dream game. Now I have games I have never played sitting on the shelf. I bought them because they looked interesting and...well...because I could. I would give up every one of those CDs before I gave away my original mint Final Fantasy III for the SNES, in a heartbeat. I still smile when I catch sight of that box, the same smile the creeps over my face every time I see that blood spray in Samurai Shodown after a killer death blow or whenever Terry tosses his hat into the air.

I think I got something in my eye...

I know what you mean. It's such a great feeling knowing you own what you've wanted for so long. It still gives me a great feeling being able to play Samurai Shodown on my nice big TV in my living room... hell, RIGHT NOW! I own it! It's mine. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

Totally. 10 years I wanted one! Got it last month. It's like the feeling I'll have when I finally get my '62 Thunderbird. Or my '59 Eldorado. Or my '70 Superbird. Or anything else that is the stuff of dreams....
