hi

i have a total of 2 lectures to give on my leadership course, 1 is almost finished (thanks thread to follow)

now onto the second.....

In this one i am going to try and find out why we all pay the crazy amounts for the neo geo games

now i would like whoever responds to this thread to let me know why you pay the amount you do to get the neo games to add to your collection

it doesnt necessarily have to be on the Neo to be honest, if you have spent thousands on any sort of videogame collection i would like to know what drives you to get just another game to add to it

still reading - please respond

this lecture i would like to sell the idea to my audience, so they understand and maybe relate to why we spend so much on videogames, when there are obviously more neccesities in life

thanks for your time :) :)

already thanks to Wes as he stated that all the neo games are arcade perfect thats why he always wanted one from a young age - Psychoanalysed that already

I'd love to help, but what should I say? Why I like games that are no longer in the vogue, and have a hard time competing with the current or next generation consoles?

In a recent thread, someone asked "how do you justify spending so much money on Neo games?"

I don't believe there is any difference in spending 1$ for a game or 1000$. A good game is a good game. If you could steal the game in the first place (whether it be off the shelf, or off the internet), why do we pay any money at all?

Arcade gaming is a completely different animal than home consoles, though. Home consoles have the power of advertisement to drive their sales. The only advertisement arcade games have is the game itself. If the game is no good you don't buy into it. You take your money and run. This forces developers to make every aspect of an arcade game with the highest standards in mind. When you walk by that arcade machine the music MUST drive you, the graphics MUST hypnotize you, and the gameplay MUST keep you. Arcade games are something you can literally bank on.

You don't have that comfort with home console games. Home consoles are not an investment anymore but a gamble. They have moved from games of skill to interactive movies. Tech-art has become pop[culture]-art. The right PR manager with the right timing and you've got yourself the next American Idol. Is mentioning one cultural smash while poking fun of another taboo? Simon says, "Thumbs down".

Furthermore, we have a skewed vision of what necessities really are. Food? Sure... but that doesn't include Coke, Doritos, and Birthday Cake. We take a undeniable need and take it to an extreme that places it somewhere in a gray area. Who needs an immune system when you could buy one in a bottle? Conveniences purge necessity. Extremes humble convenience. Extrememly Convenient it is anything but.

Bottom line? Arcade games are works of art. Audibly. Visualy. Spiritualy.

Well, the reason I got into retro-gaming about a year ago now is the nostalgia about the good times I had with my friends playing NES, SNES at home, and Capcom and SNK games in the arcades. I had been a gamer since I was a small kid, with my good ol' Sinclair Spectrum and the C64, and had been a fanatic of all kinds of games until the demise of the SNES system. I played some PSX in the years 99-2000 but got bored of it very quickly: 3d console games suck pretty much IMO. Then I rediscovered my love for 2D-based games through the DC and MAME. Soon my desire to play all the games I played in my childhood, and the evident fact that MAME was not good enough for me, made me start to buy and play all the old 8 and 16-bit systems. Now I'm the very happy owner of a Megadrive a Turbografx, NES, a SNES, an AES and a Supergun, and an ever-growing collection of games for all of those systems.

Also, as a collector and gamer, I don't have the slightest interest in buying stuff only for the mere collectibility of it. I always look for the games I played as a kid first, or for those more modern but which I would really enjoy now, second. I would never buy games for hoarding them. Hope that answers your question somehow.

End of story :-)

Buster and everyone-

Why we spend $150+ on a videogame:

1.) NEO games are well polished pieces of work. They are quality. Most/all the audio in the games are wave sampled. Animation is fluid on many games. They were originally designed to be money makers in the arcades, and the polish incurred on these games help that. Any game that goes into an arcade needs to be relatively perfect.

2.) Quite often, NEO games hold their buy value. If someone buys Pulstar or a good KOF game a couple years ago, you can bet these same games can be sold or bought for a very similar price. In rare occurances, some games' value increase. Those lucky souls who bought Metal Slug 1,2,and X, Pulstar/Blazing Star, and many more when they were released are happy campers now as their $200-$250 purchases just rised between 100-1000%.

3.) Very dedicated fan base. Just look at all the guys here! We got some damned dedicated bastards on this site and its friggin awesome!

4.) SNK/Playmore make a limited amount on these games. Also notice however that these companies don't seem to sell out do they? You remember Acclaim and Gametek from the NES, Genesis, & SNES days? They were the epitome of "selling out" to teh crouds. And the majority of their games sucked ass, IMO. SNK (and Playmore as we are starting to see now) do not sell out. They make great games year after year (more or less depending on your preference.)

5.) Lastly, this reason is the culmination of reasons 1-4 above. Its prestige. I hate to admit it but it is true for me, and may be true for others here as well. Everyone here, think of all your friends... how many of them have a NEO (not including NGPC)? Believe me, and I know you do... NEO owners are either the envy of non NEO owners or we NEO owners are idiots. I vote more for the former.

I wrote this on my lunch break at work and it was kinda fun. Anyway you can take this to the bank, its how I feel.

I think that it originally started out for me because I was good at playing video games. Other people I knew were good at sports and other things. The only outlet that I had besides video games was Karate. But I was good at video games and would beat the games very quickly so... I had to buy more. After I got my own job I spent most of my money on video games not only was it something fun to do but I now have found that I am adicted to video games.

Yeah, I'll say it "I am addicted."

That addiction turned into impulse buying. I mostly collect Nintedo brand games. But I have a crap load of others as well. Now that I'm married I have curbed my habit quite a bit but not enough. When it comes to the Neo-Geo I buy the games becuse I like them. I like the game play, the sounds, even the way the carts look. Plus it's not something you readiely see around. So when people come over their like "What is that." After telling them about it, it makes me feal special that I have something that is not easy to come by.
I guess one last reason I loke the Neo so much is because it was something from my child hood that I could not have. I wanted one so badly and was even about to buy the system but my parents wouldnt let me spend that much on a video game. So now it's like I am living a childhood dream.

I am generally speaking for myself when I say this but I pay alot for a game because if there is a game I like or want I am going to pay the price no matter what it is ...

I think I also sometimes feel that it is justified to pay upwards for a game especially if it is NEW or MINT because I am fearful that the game will become harder or impossible to find in such great condition later down the road .

Why am i prepeared to spend $100's on Neo Geo games. For me it is a combination of many things, including.....

- It IS the arcade game, not a port not 99% not ture to the original but different (Daytona USA 2001) it's 100% there, loading times, controll, feel, graphics and sound.
- they feel well made, this isn't a SNES cart we are talking about, they are big, heavy and the cases clunk (sounds sad but it's the same principal as having a car with a good door, for some reason people CARE about the sound a door makes when it closes)
- it has some real ground breaking games (Metal slug, KOF et all genuinly not bettered on any other system).
- they hold value, hence making them meore collectable due to less associated risk.
- In todays world they are unique in terms of gameplay and it's the best 2D system out there

thants my 2p worth hope it helps

I just Love Neo Geo Stuff and have a lot of extra money to spend each month on it wink That and Japanese animation.

I guess I should also add that the $350 for a new game is not a big chunk of my budget at the moment. When I worked full time at Best buy I could really only afford the used games and bought those. When it comes to the $1000+ titles I stay away from them unless I already own them then I keep them. I just buy the NGM version of theose game since it is the same game to be. If I have the NGH version I keep it but if not then oh well I will play it on my MVS cab or with an convertor. same diff to me.
