Was the AES console released before the MVS arcade system?

I just read this at the glossary:
Common short hand for the Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System. Originally created in 1990 by SNK. It began as a rental-only, arcade-exact system (see AES) in Japan before its huge popularity prompted SNK to release it for purchase. From its inception, SNK planned an arcade version (See MVS) to promote the home system in arcades. Much to the surprise of SNK, the arcade version was a historic success while the AES version fizzled into a cult following. The system (home and arcade) is the longest supported system (by a parent company) in video game history, surpassing the Game Boy/Game Boy Color. It is why this site and this community exists. Also referred to as the "Neo."
So if I understood it well, the AES was first a rental system, then they started selling it and then they created the MVS for arcade use?
I always thought the MVS was first... eye eye

"It began as a rental-only, arcade-exact system"

Yup, arcade-exact of a non-existent arcade system...

Come on, you're smarter than this. This quote doen't stand, guess it's a typo, because we all know MVS was first

Yeah, I do agree this has to be some type of error, but in fact I also didn't know the AES was first a rental system, so who knows... loco

So what was the first Neo Geo MVS game in the arcades... We know Nam75 and the lot were the home systems... I guess MVS would be the same, but I didn't see one until Fatal Fury/Sam. Showdown days...

The first I have personally seen was a 4 slot with: Top Players Golf, Nam 1975, Magician Lord, and Baseball Stars Professional.

So the MVS was released in 89, right?
Well, my dedicated MVS can is dated 1989 with the serial # being 17,926. I would think that there have to be some 1988's out there by how high my serial number is for the first year and the fact that it is a Torrance, CA cabinet and not a japanese one.

Developed in 89, released in 90. Release dates are the basis for the Glossary Dates, not when the items were manufactured or developed/patented.

The two were developed side by side, so if you're struggling with the chicken-before-egg analogy your looking at it wrong.

How could the system have been around before 1990, if all the earilest games are copyrighted in 1990?

I'm pretty sure it was released in 1990 (developed in 1989 probably).

I should add, the MVS was release slightly earlier than the AES, but that was simply to build hype and not because they were developed seperately. For that reason there are '89 dated MVS machines, but all AES are 1990 -which is what the Glossary is talking about, but I can see how it might be confusing in the way its worded there (it's hard to tell if I mean the AES, mentioned in the previous sentence, or the whole thing including MVS). I'll clarify on my next edit.

I've yet to find a source I believe that has the exact MVS release date, since most of them don't even mention the rental-only period in JPN.

No, no...the AES did come out in 1990 IN JAPAN! Why? Because in the old issues of EGM and Gamepro, retailers like Ultimate Game Club were selling the Japanese systems and even went as far as to say that you could call their hotline to "hear the actual sounds and voices of the incredible Neo Geo"!

Also, the December 1990 issue of GamePro had a "Overseas Prospects" review of the soon-to-be released US NEo Geo AES. The first paragraph talks about the Japanese unit being out for 8 months and the fact that you got a better deal by waiting for SNK to make it's US run!

Was the rental system released in 90 and then the aes went for sale in 91?

For some reason 91 sticks in my head. spock

I know that MVS came out before AES. I think that the MVS came out early in '90, and the AES came out later that same year. I think, but, ain't 100% positive.

The MVS was first and they made the home system for people who wanted to play the games in their homes but couldnt afford arcade cabinets but tested the water first but making it rental only from what i heard in some big video stores/

Weirdest thing is although neo geo home system was not that big or commercialy available in uk there was actually a shop near where my sister lived that actually had the system for rent with games, they only had 5 games though and im sure someone must have sold them it cheap.
