Hey, I'm getting a new fighting game for my MVS, and I was thinking of getting a KOF game. I've played all the games from the KOF series and only two games, KOF '98 and 2K2, seemed to jump out of me. It's a hard decision, so I've decided to ask the people of Neo-Geo.com for help. Thanks in advance.

Personally, i prefer 2002 over '98... but when i first started playing i probably would have liked 98 more. I think that 98 is a better place to start, because if you aren't really hardcore into it, you have the overall excellent presentation and music of the game to fall back on. 2002's gameplay is simply superior to that of 98's, and its roster is far more interesting.

when(and if) you become a freak, backgrounds and music begin to matter less.

both are great games.
but compared to 98, 2002 is just a 100% rehash.
the bg's aren't interesting....music is blah...nothing is decent.

98 is an amazing game, and you can find it for cheaper. definitely pick it up over 2002.

2002 pissed me off with the new sprite stances and edits to Iori,Kim,Yashiro,Shermie and whoever else I forgot. The sprites should have been redone completely however I did like what they did to tAKUMA because in previous KOF's he was more like Mr.Karate minus the mask.
2002 gave you great gameplay but just slapped everything else together in order to meet a deadline it seemed.

Man, what a choice oh_no

I would have to go against the grain here and say that I personally would pick 2k2. I might be somewhat biased though b/c Angel is in the game. I know that it sounds stupid for one character to mean so much in choosing a game, but I have more fun with her than any other character in a fighter. I also like a lot of the new characters available, and I like this version of Shermie too. *ducks and covers* eye eye

Either way though you can't go wrong, both games are at the top of the pile. I would rank them both in my top 5 favorite fighting games ever!

Good luck in choosing just one, b/c you will have them both soon anyways tickled

KOF>your will power loco

I havent played 2002...but 98 is almost universally loved, AND it has so far stood the test of time. It has a superior cast, I tell you that much and the ganeplay is...Muah!-stirred to perfection.

Of course, you have to look at how the responce to 2k2 is half negative. You will see how that negative judgement will grow in a few years and the newness of the game will wear off.

If that makes sense.

Here is the safest bet. Pick up the JPN HC of 98, followed by buying the DC release of 2k2. Its the best bet.

I've never played 2002 but 98 is an excellent game. The guy I got it from said that KOF 98 was his favorite Neo game ever too.

I'd say start there and then get 2002 in the future. It will cost less then too.

98. It is just a better game. 2k2 is awesome but 98 beats it by just enough for me. :D

If you are a casual gamer and aren't into the dynamics of fighting games (as in, you aren't into combos, in-depth strategies, and competing against human competition), ie, you just like to sit down to a good fighter, 98 would be best for you.

If you like competition and "deep" fighters, 2002 is the best choice. I can't tell you about music or backrounds (I don't give a damn about them-I play fighting games for the FIGHT not the prettyness), but I can tell you 2002 has an incredibly deep engine and it's very balanced. More balanced even than 98. The game is incredibly un-friendly to scubs and has a very difficult learning curve which is probably why so many people don't like it. 2002 is my favorite KOF ever, and it's physically HARD for me to admit that, since I assumed no fighter could ever be better than KOF '98 and SFA3. I was wrong. KOF 2002 is the next level in fighting games. :)

I think many people abandoned 2002 due to the fact that the aesthetics are ghastly...Everything is 100% RIPPED from previous KOFS with the exception of game play balancing and a few horrible sprite edits.
Complicated learning curve is A-Okay but I just could'nt swallow the fact that 2002 is equivalent to a MUGEN fighter.

This coming from a person who says after the releasing of 2002,2001 looks better and better..
Playmore needs to stop their MUGEN ways and you need to lay off the acid.

if you play for gameplay go for 02, if you wanna play a game that looks better and almost plays as good go for 98. for pure gameplay also go look for 01. many may hate it but it plays like one of the best. but it looks even worse that 02.

thats my 50 cents :D

BOTH!

The characters are like worlds apart, and I couldn't imagine living without one or the other.

Cheapest route to tide you over? Get KOF98 on cart and the the KOF2k2 port on DC. I just put up a mini-review of it and its REALLY close to the original (unlike the KOF98 ports). If you end up loving KOF2k2 you can just go get the cart later. :D

Well the question is, are you gonna be playing by yourself or with a friend?
Because if by yourself then 98,BUT
if with a friend 2002. 2k2 is the deepest KOF ever created alot of the development
time was spent on game play, as opposed to the graphics.

The roster in this one is UNBEATABLE!
you have new and old people in this one so you get alot of the old but with new stuff.

The moves and combos in 2k2 just look sweet as hell in this one. One of my favorite things to do at Arcade-Infinity is right about when they are not too far from dying, and I am using Iori is i like going into the Maiden Masher DM, then right when the move is about over then I go right into his QCFx4+AC DM!!

Man the look on their face is like i just slapped them or something.=)
Also the supers in this one are something you will savor right when you get them pulled off!
There is a member on this board who i call a good friend and when we go hang out EVERYTIME we have to at least get in 20 matches of KOF2k2 I am being Serious!
always 20 or more matches it is that fun.

Also one more thing i if you go to arcades everybody is still playing KOF2k2
so if you got 2k2 you would have a jump on your opposers!

Besides at least ou will be caught up and the other ones are not going anywhere.

Either way you will have a blast!
:)

PS no disrespect to BB but.........
i like Iori's new look, same with Kim,I do hate how Yashiro looks though.BUT
they gave Shermie a freakin make over big time, damn dude her thighs look gorgeous and her legs and she bounces now!! buttrock

98.
and what rade was saying about the newness wearing
off. i think you ll see that alot on 2001 and 2002
2002 has more of a happy lets play a fighting game!
kind of mood.
things to me feel thrown in. including the new things
like new sprites and whatever.
i ve seen the hsdms and i ve had some done on me.
some are neat.
but its all for comedic value.
i rue the day kof turned into a comic book happy go lucky kind of game.
98 is pure greatness.
if i had the choice of playing either 98 or 02
i would opt for 98 every time.
02s lacking something for me.
