AF1 is not a NeoGeo game, but I think you already realized that.
Anyways, which is better? Well, let's compare:
AF1:
- Vertical screen, allowing room for impressive-looking bosses.
- Not a NeoGeo game.
- You play through 7 stages out of, I think, 8.
- You don't restart the last stage if you continue there (thank goodness), but the final boss is still hard.
- Second loop has no difficulty increase; it's just the same as the first loop.
- Not as silly as the later AF games (no monkeys, no eyeballs, none of that).
- Pretty decent shooter, overall.
- No Cindy & Ellen . Oh well, guess I'll have to settle for Mao Mao (lemme add that the F-15's bomb attack sucks if you're not powered up enough).
AF2:
- Horizontal screen, not necessarily a bad thing.
- A NeoGeo game.
- You play through 10 stages; sometimes the order of stages are random. Also, the last boss is random.
- Unless the other player is still alive, you restart the last level if you continue there; yuck, I hate R-Type.
- The hardest AF game out of the three; second loop just screams "Stop hogging the machine and let the other people play!!!".
- Some AF1 bosses have been shrunk to big targets.
- Now it gets silly, especially in the last level (a monkey flying a ship?). And the Engrish
- Pretty decent shooter, overall.
- First appearance of Cindy & Ellen. Were it not for them, I would've never been so attracted to this game
AF3:
- Again a horizontal screen, and again a NeoGeo game.
- You play through 8 stages out of, well, a lot. Trust me, you're not gonna see all the stages in one loop. Also, the last boss is random too. Unfortunately, the stages are short
- Again with the "restart the last level if you continue there" bit. I hate that
- The easiest AF game out of the three; I can get to the last level on one credit, something I can't do on AF1 and 2. And even the second loop isn't so hard.
- More AF nostalgia. Witness the shapeshifting boss that can sometimes turn into that gunboat boss from AF1. Or the monkey/ghost combination.
- Silliness at its maximum!!! Not much Engrish, but the planes are just weird now. Different powerup and bomb capacities, and some of the bomb attacks are just out there. And let's not forget the monkey.
- Pretty decent shooter, overall.
- They put Cindy & Ellen on the lamest plane in this game!!! It can only hold 1 powerup, and its bomb attack blows. Yuck!!! Give me the F-14 any day.
So there you go. My suggestion: Get all 3
