I find that I simply cannot get enjoyment out of grapple/counter 3D fighters like I have with 2D fighters.

Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Soul Caliber, and Dead or Alive, just can't hold my attention when there are no super cool specials or combos and such.

Even something as simple as a fireball is more interesting than any 3D fighter moves. KOFs, Guilty Gear, Street Fighter, even Mortal Kombat is just more interesting to me.

Anyone else get this feeling? If not tell me how to enjoy more 3D fighters.

I know that feeling. No matter how much people praise Dead or Alive 3 (I'm an Xbox owner, so that's the closest example), I just can't find anything fun about it. The only 3d fighter I've found enjoyable so far is MK:DA, and only because it plays like the old 2d Mortal Kombats in 3d.

I agree. The only 3D fighters I ever enjoyed (and still enjoy) are the Soul Calibur series, and the Street Fighter EX series. And the latter mostly because it plays almost identical to its 2D counterparts, only in 3D. The other common 3D fighters I just can't get into, for similar reasons as the topic's creator stated, and simply because they're just too realistic for me. Not only the graphics, but the damn way you're meant to play the whole game (close range counters, throws, grabs, limb-to-button layout) just feels more like a "fight simulation" rather than a fantastic fighting game experience. My two cents.

Hmmm I'm not going to be able to identify that game...I see a 3...could it Be Street Fighter Alpha 3? The SFA series is one of my favs.

As some have said the 3D translations of MK and SF have been enjoyable because the moves were translated instead of switching to a fight simulator.

Also my apologies on my Soul Calibur/Caliber spelling.

But for all the praise of bouncing boobies 3D still doesn't cut it.

This isn't to say I don't enjoy 3D games, because I feel some games can only be done in 3D, a Metal Gear Solid comes to mind. I also though Mario 64 was great, granted I don't consider the same how do I say "game" as Super Mario World. Both games are great but Mario 64 is in no way a 3D translation of SMW, its a whole new thing.

I seriously enjoy playing games like Tekken Tag, and even Tekken 4. There's so much to learn with these games that it's unreal. The action is much different than your 2D fighters that breathes fresh air into your game time. Also, Spinmaster introduced me to Rival Schools the other day (smacking myself for not getting into this series sooner). Definitely a great 3D fighter with likable characters and easy fun gameplay.

I used to be like you with 3D, but as the 3D got better I became more and more into them.

personally, I thought, and still belive that Dead or Alive games are pants. Its that simple. The fighting system is so gay.

Tekken 3 was the best hand-2-hand 3D fighting game and the series has gone down-hill eversince due to the slowed down, dummed down gameplay.

Soul Calibur is the best 3D fighting game overall and everyone knows it.

My fave 2D fighter is Street Fighter Alpha 3 - its got my favourite characters and is easily the most balanced. Collision detection has been perfected and the beautifully animated backdrops have never been beaten.

Most 3D fighters are a little to overcomplicated for me.
Characters have massive movelists that I can't possibly remember, and the 3rd dimension is yet another factor I have to account for when playing.

Also, most 3D fighters can be beaten by liberal button-mashing alone. Skill is a secondary requirement.

2D fighters are a little more straightforward, the movelists are small, but each move has its own uses/penalties, and the priorities of the moves are easier to learn. Also, the lack of a 3rd dimension makes moving arround the fighting area easier to understand (no barriers/pits hidden by a poor camera angle)

Personally my favorate 3D fighter is Bloody Roar:PF, which is a good blend of 'simplified' 2D mechanics with the addition of 3D movement and a larger moveslist.

Soul Calibur is good - but still a button-masher.

The answer to the "button masher" statment is simple... if you really was good at a game, it doesnt matter how much your opponent button bashes because you'll be able to beat them...

However it is damn annoying when players who never played the game before come over and keep doing the same thing over and over again wether you beat them or not :(

(Eddie Gordo in Tekken 3 anyone? BASH THOSE KICKS BUTTONS RAH?!?!)

I'd say it's like this-

If you want 'realistic' games and/or VR style games, or cinematic style games, then 3D is your medium

If you want cartoony, artsy or fun games, go 2D

I enjoy 2-D fighters alot more as I feel i'm more connected with the character. That is, its easier, and more fun for my brain-hands-screen connection to be made.

I'm one of those guys that actually liked MK until they released MK4.

2D shooters have been my fav genre for over 10 years. I love commando-games as well, like Ninja Commando and Shock Troopers. I think of those as 2-D versions of Doom.

But for the time i'm not on my Neo, I'm on my PC playing BF1942.

Oh, And I refuse to buy X-box, Gamecube, PS2, or GBA. I made a pact with myself 8 years ago never to buy another game system again. I've kept that pact. The last system I bought was my Sega Nomad, which I still play today.

2D lives! buttrock

False. One of my friends, who totally SUCKS at any kind of videogame, let alone a 2D Fighter, can regularly beat me in Soul Calibur by sheer button mashing alone. And so would he beat you or any other. Even my little sister can defeat anybody just by frentic button mashing, very often by using one or two moves over and over again, ad nauseam.

I'm going to have to agree with Lovecraft, since there are no "specials" or very large combos, its mostly just button mashing, especially with counter games, I can win matches in DOA with only grabs and counters. Who needs punches and kicks?

The graphics in 3D fighters are just a bunch of over-hpyed math equations, dressed up like a French whore in New Orleans.

Gimme sprites! I want to see art, not calculus on acid. :D

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Samurai 64. SNK made an engaging 3D game, where Tekken, VF, and DOA fell short. MK:DA could have been great if the ground combo system hadn't been totally dial-a-combo.

I know exactly how you feel lithy. The only 3D fighters I've ever enjoyed are Soul Calibur, Rival Schools 2, MK4 and DA. I just don't see the point of having move lists that consist of 100+ moves when 2 rounds don't really last that long to begin with.

That's not to say I hate 3D all together though. I had a blast with MK4 on the PSOne and Gold on the Dreamcast. I felt Midway did a perfect job at converting the series' 2D roots to 3D. Mortal Kombat 3-Trilogy on the other hand.............. oh_no

Soul Calibur and Tekken have plenty of combos. Having played Soul Calibur for years now, I can definitely vouch for the fact that it is NOT a button masher. If you get killed by a masher, you just flat out suck. Parrying in SC is so easy that once you get the hang of your fave character's movelist and get parrying down, the battles get flat-out vicious, skillful, and very entertaining. Tekken Tag is also a very worthwhile pursuit. T4 still blows the goat.

BTW, VF4E is the mother of all 3D fighting games.
Endlessly deep, characters that take a truly long time to master, tons of combos, great gfx and music, and the best quest and training modes ever. It's a pure fucking 10 of a fighting game.
It just takes a long time before it finally clicks on in your head...but once it does, oh lord is it ever amazing. Right now I'm working on Jacky and Shun-Di.

2D fighters are still lovely, and I'll always love the true classics like SS2, FFS, KoF'98, Hyper Fighting and Super Turbo...but I'd be bored stiff if I didn't allow myself to enjoy the new stuff. Free your mind peeps.

I don't really feel lost in 3D, but it definitely seems like a different atmosphere when you are playing one. Soul Calibur can be a button masher because I remember when I first played it in 1999 after my friend owned the game and played the hell out of it, I played him and beat the living shit out of him in it. It's an awesome game, no doubt, but it doesn't rely that much on skill.

2D fighters is basically all I play nowadays and will continue to play, you normally don't win by pure luck, it takes skill to play. I'm not saying I hate 3D fighters because there are 3D fighters I like e.g. Virtua Fighter series and Fighting Vipers.

Ever play Ehrgeiz or Psychic Force 2012?

A couple of my favorite 3-D fighters, which are not masher-friendly. They do require some skill to play.

Though, they are chock full of bad bugs and glitches, I must admit...

Still, you shouldn't think all 3-D fighters are mashers, there are still a fair amount of skill-intensive titles to balance out with the ones that are.

And don't forget there are plenty of 2-D button mashing fighters as well...

I always enjoyed a game, regardless of its graphics, because it was good or fun to play. Having some variety is important, and that applies to other things as well.

Hmmm Ergheiz to me was not fun at all, but I guess the bugs and the severe unplayability of it pushed me away before I learned the fight system all that well.

I guess 3D Fighter is just another Genre that I should put with RPGs and Adventures as games I just don't enjoy.
