Will it ever happen again?

Back in the time when the Neo Geo was released, SNK come out with an unpreceeded idea. Release a console which is too expensive for most gamers. It had power which pissed on anything available back then - and a console which after like 12 years, is still going on. Through, this console was only for a few selected.... fans that certainly have thanked back this system by being supportive all these years.

Will it ever happen again? Can you imagine some other Japanese company creating a console so powerful that is MUCH MUCH better than coming next-generation consoles (XBOX 2 / GC 2 / PS3)? But obviously at a price?

I guess not, but still, the Neo Geo is a historical dare that had everything against, and it goes against every business sense. Doesnt mean its a bad thing though :D

I am captivated by this idea. The idea that another "monster" console will come along and technically drstroy all other consoles but be priced super expensive so that only the richest and most hardcore gamers will be able to enjoy it. The only way I see this happening is if arcades make some kind of miracle comeback, which I don't really see happening.

I missed out on the whole Neo Geo thing (in its hey day at least). For me, to own a Neo Geo in the Samurai Showdown days would have been unreal. I just remember reading review for it and just being floored by a game that was over 100 megs.

Well, arcade games now are on par on what most consoles can do... Actually we are getting arcade machines which are based on home consoles. This means that arcade games are not going to impress anyone graphically any more.

The only thing that lures players to arcades are those things that make it nearly impossible to relive at home... such as the dancing games, car driving etc.... I guess you know what I mean.

My ultimate dream is an MVS version 2. It will be a monster 2D machine (eww, keep 3d away!!!) with lots of super effects and hiresolution. Can you imagine playing such a Metal Slug? It would own!

Ah well, it will never happen annoyed

This has been discussed. But I can't help going back to it. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you see it) I'm pretty sure I heard that Playmore plans to support the MVS hardware for another five years, so MVS2 would seem to be a ways away.
