I'm not trying to sound like an ass, but I am curious as to why they are important since a lot of folks here make it part of their sigs.

Thanks.

Nothing important about it except for the video output quality or board revision. spock

Those in sigs are just way they let people know they really own a Neo geo system,
incase people flamed them for coming here for the drama. make_fac loco

How does your question make you sound like an ass? Its perfectly valid...

Anyways, I think people post their serial#'s just as a way to show off their pride and enthusiasm for owning a piece of SNK history.

Usually they'll put something along the lines of "Proud owner of" or "Proud NEO-owner since", etc...

Someone once said it was a neat idea that would allow you to see who else had a similar numbered system as you.

On the technical side, like deffty just said, the serials determine the video output of the different boards SNK manufactured over time. Supposedly the older systems' boards have more parts and output a better RGB signal than later ones. Also, they're said to be more suitable for video modifications.

Don't know much else about the numbers beyond that...

Serial numbers don't really mean that much. I think having a higher or lower serial number just gives a system some nostalgic value as being one of the first or last systems made. I have three Neo Geo's. I have one with a serial number in the 0001xx range and I have one in the 338xxx range. I have one of the highest and lowest serial number systems here on Neo-Geo.com. The main system I use is in the 015xxx range. It is modded and it seems perfect to me.
