I mean atmosphere style achieved through graphics and sound, not gameplay style :)

I think the Last Blade series and Samurai Shodown 3

As for atmosphere and style, Last Blade 1 exceeds last blade 2. Both games have incredible backgrounds, but when you take into account Yuki's snow stage, the boat with Zantetsu's entrance, Shikyou's stage, the fact that there are more distinct interactions between characters. For example, Moriya has dialogues with Yuki, then Kaede, then Kagami, as opposed to in LB2, there is just one dialogue with a rival, and then a dialogue with Kouryu.

I can't say one has better music than the other, as both are incredible.

World Heroes! :D

I haven't seen them all but I'd have to say that Last Blade is the best I've seen.

And I know it's older but Ninja Masters has a great sense to it.

Ninja Masters is incredible for atmosphere and overall style.

Everything drips of style in that game.

From Karasu's desperation, to the cliffs of Raiga's stage at sunset, to all the awesome BGMs...

There's just so much goodness in that game.

Here are some of my choices:

Art of Fighting 2 - The backrounds are awesome. Look at Robert's mansion backround that has a fountain and a 'vet sittin' pretty. The butler even peeks his head out of the door to catch the fight. The bass going on in that tune is sweet as well. Makes you really feel like you're fighting at a country club of some sort. Lee's stage is awesome with all the tourism going on and people stopping by to watch. His music has a very far eastern sound to it as well that goes well with his character/stage. The secret agents in all the backrounds makes it pretty cool too.

Mark of the Wolves - Just look at Gato's backround and listen to his music. Genius at work. I adore Rock's stage. It truly makes southtown come alive, and the Robert Miles excerpt really makes it seem like there's a nice party going on in the club behind. Nice cars as well. Fucking class A, man. Then there's Terry's stage, Kain's stage, Hookutomaru's music.. man, this game is just oozing with great atmosphere. I just wish it played a little different, but that's not the topic of discussion :)

Fatal Fury Special - "Wow SG, I didn't know you were gonna pick that!" Well take a gander upon Geese, Krauser, Terry, Cheng, Joe, Mai, Duck, and Tung's stage. That's just scratching the surface of the game! All awesome backdrops that are accompanied by equally awesome music (especially Geese and Krauser). Bright and beautiful colors make them really come alive.

Samurai Shodown 2 - This is the difinitive Samurai Shodown game for me. EVERY single one of the backrounds is A+, best Neo has ever put out. I fucking love fighting at Sieger's place - having guards and a king watch you with that music going on makes it really seem like you're fighting for your life. Galford's stage really brings you back to early America, and man does that music just KICK!! Fuck man, it just doesn't get any better than this! I could go through listing all the stages and such, but they are all awesome, and this is one of the few games I love all the characters, music, stages, sound effects, everything.

I'll have to go with SS3 based on the music and atmosphere in Ukyo's stage. The music is especially eerie on SS3CD. What makes SS3CD even cooler are those little animations during loads that almost seem to build tension before the match. It's quite incredible.

SS2 and Ninja Masters, followed closely by the Last Blades and then Last Resort... those games have the coolest atmospheres... I know Last Resort isn't a fighter, but it deserved mentioning wink

SSII - Everything about it makes it stand out above the rest; music, BG's, character designs, and a perfect samurai-esque sense of atmosphere (which according to Kuroko is horrible).

And a truly unique sense of gameplay that has long since been forgotten by the game developers of new.

(same could be said about SSIII, but this is a personal preference of mine)

This is a tough one. Probably one of the SS, but which one is hard to tell...may be 3...

KOF 99 has also a very good atmosphere IMHO.

'99 does have a great atmosphere...but I thought the question was STYLE?

MOTW = king of style

Atmosphere? = SS2 or Last Blade 1

Nice to see someone else shares this opinion. LB2 is a great game, but I feel that the first is by far so much better for those reasons you have stated. I love the character interaction with one another. It gives the game much more depth, and it feels like a story is being told. One of my favorite things about the game is the feel each stage gives. They all feel different and unique, but the one thing I think they do well is capture the feeling of the 1860's. LB1 has much more style than any other Neo fighter IMO.

Kid Aphex just about summed it up: Mark of the Wolves just comes off as one of the most incredible games stylistically on the Neo. Play through as Rock and just look at Kain's BG to just FEEL how much is in there. Just friggin awesome. :D

My top is MOTW because of just about everything mentioned above. I also think RBS has a lot of style to it. The backgrounds are great (love how Tung's stage changes from BW to full color), the music is incredible, the announcer is the best announcer of any fighting game (HEY! Hows it going dude? Now lets begin, choose your favorite character!). The game really has a lot of style to it. Lastly I would have to go with Last Blade 1. The game just reeks of quality.

Real Bout Special!

Break away backgrounds and incredible music (and the coolest select screen ever made) make it super stylish supreme (SSS if you will).

I think the majority of the titles in the Neo Geo library have tremendous amounts of style & atmosphere, from Flying Power Disc to Metal Slug to AOF3 to KOF '96, Blazing Star, the Samurai series, Magical Drops and Last Blades and so on...

But for that darker, more "serious" tone in atmosphere, these games come to mind:

Art of Fighting 2
Real Bout Fatal Fury
Ninja Master's
Samurai Spirits 3
KOF '95
