Ok, NGF Nazi's (aka Makismo or any other idiots) need not apply.

What is (or was supposed to be) the correct genre stripe code for Neo games.

Fighting = Red
Shooters = Blue
Puzzle = Yellow? <= this is what I need to know.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Also if you were to procure a US insert for Magical Drop 3, which background color would you prefer: White, Classic Grey, or Black?

Thanks again.

although ngf did not go about the genre stripes the correct way (in terms of how to market the inserts), werent the colors that they used the same ones that SNK of japan used for specific genres:

fighting: red
action: orange
shooters: blue
sports: green
racing: grey
puzzle: yellow
variety(majong and such): pink

snk usa offialy used:

green: sports
blue: shooters
red: fighters, action, etc.

I think that ngf's execution of the genre stripes was shoddy but snk did fuck up also. the genre stripes snk used do not mean much of anything when 1,2 and 3 have blue stripe while x and 4 have red stripes. it would of been great if they could have picked a format and stuck with it.
oh well, just another reason to buy jap carts.

remember my mvs stickers?

v1 had red, green, blue and yellow stripes, but i didn't really like the yellow ones. that's why v2 has only red, green and blue stripes.

for US/Euro release there were only 3 colors every used

Green: sports
Blue: shooting
Red: everything else

The japanese releases had a wider range of colors for titles but IMO they were never really genre striped. as you can see by the pic below

<img src="http://www.neogeocentral.com/Genrestripes.jpg" alt=" - " />

later what was attempted to be a adoupted by some was based on a color coding used in a Neogeofreak mag issue. Personaly though i have a wide assortment of SNK catalogs that use a larger breakdown on cats and colors. my personal favorite is this

<img src="http://www.neogeocentral.com/gameclass.jpg" alt=" - " />

although those colors follow no set standards in correlation to the NGH releases

which is why most people revert to use whatever you want. But as far as the US mark went it was always only red,green, blue

thanks.
but then again ...

double dragon : purple stripe
kof95 & real bout : yellow stripe
real bout 2 : red stripe

man, snk f*cked up big time.
and i always thought, that us metal slug x's insert, which is based on us last blade 2's insert, was a joke. :D

Which is really the point I was trying to make. Actually KOF 95's stripe is orange on the Japanese release. I also have a neo geo cup 98 with a red strip. The stripes also very in shades and width. So SNK Japan IMO did not really closely follow any Genre striping code. It may have just been they used what looked best or whatever they felt like wink

Arguable there was never realy a offical US/euro NGH release of a puzzle game other then Joy Joy kid/puzzled which did not have a genre stripe because it was a early release. So you can say well if SNK did release a puzzle game in the US it would have had a yellow stripe. But unless Poti & Nya is released in the US with a yellow stripe then you are just making speculations.

Who really knows? I purchased Metal Slug X direct from SNK USA and it has a RED stripe. When I purchased a new Metal Slug 3 when it launched the stripe was BLUE.

My english Viewpoint is RED. My english Top Hunter is RED. Andro Dunos is RED. Aero Fighters 2 is BLUE. Baseball Stars 2 is RED.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason... discuss.

That's a US Dog Tag Baseball Stars 2.
I beleive the Euro one has the red stripe on the spine.
I have a US one,but I remember someone posting a pic of the Euro one and wondering why the spine strip was red .

well maybe people should just realize there was never really any kind of Genere stripe adoptation and SNK just used whatever the felt Like from whatever template they were using to create the next insert wink after all you never Saw any type of documentation or SNK produced catalog the reported what everything was suppose to be colored. but lets look at this

Game US NGH release date
Mutation nation 4/17/92
Last Resort 4/24/92
Basebal Stars 2 4/26/92

Busy month for the person putting together the Inserts. Probably saved the Template on his PC then worked on it for making the various inserts (yes I know the were probably done before the release of course)

Prehaps this whole attempt people are trying to make with Color coding Genre stripes is Just a futile attempt to make sense of something that was never there.....Just a thought.
