OK, with all the discussion lately about if you are a collector or a gamer, AES or MVS, ports, emus, etc, I thought that we can have this different categories of Neo users. The main difference between them is the amount of money you need to expense. So they are in order from most expensive to cheapest.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">1. US/Euro AES. The most expensive way, as those carts are the rarest.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">2. Jap AES. Considerable cheaper than above.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">3. Full MVS kits. Some consider those AES collectors wannabes, although a complet minty kit can be harder and more expensive to get than AES.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">4. MVS games not full kits, but care about the games being with at least some extras like the mm, want the spine in good shape with serials, care about the language, color, etc.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">5. Loose MVS carts without caring about anything else (other than not being bootlegs).
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">6. NGCD
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">7. Ports to other consoles (PSX, DC, Saturn, etc).
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">8. Going to real arcades
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">9. CDR back-ups of 6&7.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">10. TEH ROMZZZZ
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">
I guess many people falls in more than one category at the same time, or has started with one and then swapped to another.

What I want to say is that usually people who is in a category won't understand why there's people in a superior category, spending more money for getting what they think is the same (or the extra thinks are not worth that much money). For example Tarma is in 2 and he has many times made jokes about 1, like with Kizuna recently. I fall in 5 and I can't barely understand the AES owners, although I respect their choice.

In the same way other people can't understand people who is in an inferior category, thinking that they "don't get enough of the Neo feeling". xtoo_short20x is obviously the biggest example, with all his "inferior ports" bashing. And then many people around here hate 9&10, but that's another story as those are ilegal ways.

Well, what do you think? Is there some other category I missed? In which one(s) do you fall in?

I think you've made a good analysis. I definitely fall into multiple categories, namely 5 and 6. I have owned a few NGH systems and some carts, but have never been able to splurge and go purely that route. To me, there's nothing like having an actual arcade cab of my own..

That being said, I definitely don't look down on port players. It's the only way some people can get into SNK, and that's better than nothing. I used to be limited to ports, when I wasn't hanging around the arcade. I think that's why I apreciate my MVS cab and NGCD so much.

As far as laughing at purely NGH people, I don't do that either. That's their thing, more power to them. Paying more than $1000 for one game (non-proto) is definitely laughable to me though. I guess it's just a matter of priorities.

"Getting the Neo feeling" to me is playing a cab, be it full-size MVS or Candy cab. I like home carts, they definitely have an appeal all their own, but I can't justify the expense versus the amount of time I spend playing the games. If I had more money than I knew what to do with, sure I would collect home carts. That isn't reality for me though, I have other priorities that come first.

Good topic.

Maybe you guys can answer a few questions about the MVS.I'm a 7 but I want to be a 4 or 5. Is it really cheaper to own a MVS? I only have ports, which is ok for now, but I want a MVS so bad. I'm just woried about the cost of owning one of them. What type of problems do you run into with them?

Also do you have any advise for someone trying to get into owning one?

Nice classification. However, option nº 8 can be the most expensive one sometimes. For a die-hard gamer it could be a relief to buy an AES game instead of spending many quarters in the arcades.

BTW: I am in classes 1,2,3, 6 and 7.

Great work on the classification! However, I think you left at least one out and that would be people go after loose AES carts. It can be pretty cheap (most AES buyers are really looking for the complete package) and isn't all that uncommon.

Well, just some thoughts. Again, good work.

I'm a mix of 4 & 5, while I would rather prefer getting the full kit but after some more searching if I can't find one with the full kit I'll grab the one without it as long as it's not a bootleg, spine's correct, etc.

I'm also 6 & 7 as well but what about the NGPC???

Im in this order 5-4-3-1-2-7-8.................................10..................6

5. Loose MVS carts without caring about anything else (other than not being bootlegs).
#5 I want to play the games so I'll buy MVS
carts anyway I can get them...(besides boots)
That's my first goal a full MVS cart collection.

4. MVS games not full kits, but care about the games being with at least some extras like the mm, want the spine in good shape with serials, care about the language, color, etc. #4 that makes it even better...for sure but I'll buy a loose cart anyday.

3. Full MVS kits. Some consider those AES collectors wannabes, although a complet minty kit can be harder and more expensive to get than AES.
#3..Even sweeter..I also want full kits..
I buy them when I can.

Before #1
I also buy loose AES carts like Cole said.

1. US/Euro AES. The most expensive way, as those carts are the rarest.
#1 Shit yea..I'm a collector too.

2. Jap AES. Considerable cheaper than above.
#2 I want/buy them too......definitely..

7. Ports to other consoles (PSX, DC, Saturn, etc).
#I've found myself now looking for ports...and realizing I already own some.

8. Going to real arcades
#8 ..
I go to the Arcades to look and play anything SNK/Neo Geo.....when I can....all over the place.

6. NGCD
# My next endeavor.

10. TEH ROMZZZZ :)
#10...ah..I have two roms,Baseball Stars 2 and Last Blade 2 on a Mame disc..that was given to me.
I don't like or play the Roms..it's not the same..but I own two games...and I own the MVS carts to those games

I also play and collect NGPC games..
It's my favorite handheld and it sees a lot of play while I'm on the bowl.. :D

I'm 1,5,6,7, and 8. I figure sooner or later I'll delve into category 2 as well.

How bout a category for the Neo Geo Pocket?

Oh well, I didn't include a NGPC category as in my opinion that is a different story, it's a different system: a hand-held.

Well, I must say I first started in 8 (and been there once in a while ever since), then went to 7 (with Fatal Fury in my Megadrive), then went to 9 (shame on me) in the beginning of the Saturn and PSX, and about that time I discovered 10 that allowed me to explore most of the Neo games at that moment. Then I found a second hand NGCD that put me in 6, and at the beginning on 9 about this, til I found original games were really cheap and easy to find on the net so I was in pure 6 again. Thanks to it I discovered this site and went to 5 all the way. I am still on 10 to check if a game is worth it, and sometimes I return to 9 for a while just to check how are the ports. And of course I still use 8 from time to time.

You are right, I thought about that category but I finally didn't include it. Maybe I should have included it. Oh well, think of it as 5'.

Basically there are 3 ways of playing MVS: getting a cab, getting a supergun with a MVS board, and getting an AES with a phantom.

You could make a search or post a new topic about this. I personaly have a suoergun, you could check this site for more info on them:

I fall into categories 1,7,and 8.

I try to mostly buy the english homecarts but the carts that are really expensive or hard to find I get the port.(ex: Last Blade 2, Metal Slug, Metal slugx, Garou:Mark of the Wolves.)

I also play at the local arcades but there isn't many MVS cabs around where I live. Mainly just Strikers 1945, Metal Slug 2 and Bust-A-Move.

jap aes
us aes
full mvs
and soon, CD

I'll take anything neo. They've all got their bonuses. One day I'm going to grab a Cabinet, so I may as well collect the full MVS kits now.

CD's have great soundtracks, and im a sucker for music.

US Aes if i absolutely can't get my hands on a Jap version [aka, Last Resort]

And finally, JAP Aes...since there's NOTHING like a homecart babay.

Going to a real arcade should be far higher up that list.

I'd agree...but, are there actually arcades where you live?

I live in Arizona...a desert.
Be that as it may, its a booming area with new development left and right...and not a single arcade. Honest to god...we've got a Gameworks, and I don't know if you know what that is, but its hardly an arcade. More like an adult Chuck E Cheeses...

There are 3 fighters there MAYBE. MvC2, VF4 and Tekken 4...and they're locked away in a far off corner of the place.

Other than that, AZ is completely dry ... of arcades.

I'm a 1. I am realistic though. I will never own the following 3 Euro titles.

1) Stakes Winner - Jockey Racing game doesn't exactly seem like the right game for ME.

2) Ultimate 11 - I have played soccer (futbol) games before but I don't think I'd enjoy it for the $4,000 it is worth.

3) Kizuna Encounter - I recently played this game. There is a coin laundry a few blocks from my house. There is a MVS cabinet that contains 1) Sam Sho 2, 2)Fatal Fury Special, 3) Twinkle Star Sprites and 4)Kizuna Encounter . I played it a few times and was very under-impressed with it. Maybe I was expecting TOO MUCH but considering this game cost 10,000 Euro I was expecting something better than what I was playing. For those that haven't played it before...you're not missing much.

On a side note, I tried Twinkle Star Srites and that game is outrageously addictive. If I had $700, I would buy EvilWasabi's right this second. Dare I say it....if fun factor was the basis of owning a rare game, I would value TSS, more than a Kizuna only for the fact that I enjoyed TSS so much that $700 seems a fair price to me.

Also means I will be a 2 soon as I want the following JPN home carts:

Twinkle Star Sprites
Blazing Star
Pulstar
Waku Waku 7
Breakers
Magical Drop 2
Magical Drop 3
Big Tournament Golf (If I never get a Neo Turf Masters)
Double Dragon (If I never find a Euro Double Dragon)
